Maha Kumbh: Sangam water ‘unsafe’ due to high
BOD level, CPCB drops fresh report after faecal bacteria findings …………….. HT ……………. 20 Feb 2025

According to Central Pollution Control Board
data, the BOD level at Sangam was 3.94 milligrams per litre on January 13,
when the Maha Kumbh started.
BOD, a key parameter to
determine water quality, refers to the amount of oxygen required by aerobic
microorganisms to break down organic material in a water body. While a higher
BOD level indicates more organic content in the water, river water is
considered ‘fit’ for bathing if the BOD level is less than 3 milligrams per
litre.
My Take :
This
polluting of Sangam waters is obviously due to millions of persons taking a dip
in the waters daily . The total number , as of yesterday , exceeded 56.7 crore
( 567 million )
This
was totally avoidable
if the UP Government had implemented suggestions in my following email :

Not only my suggestion (
for installations of horizontal escalators / ropeways with hanging chairs / roller coasters , with Ganga water sprinklers on both the sides )
would have kept ganga-jal clean but it would have also saved the lives of those
34 persons who died in the stampede
That ( stampede ) also
brings up the matter of 18 persons dying due to a similar stampede on the
platforms of Ayodhya train station
To avoid this in future (
at all Railway Stations of the country ) , I urge the Railway Authorities to
implement , at the very entrance of each station, that Facial Recognition Device
( DIGI YATRA ) , currently installed at a few of our Airports.
Just do NOT allow entry to
the platform to anyone ( other than Railway Staff / Porters ) other than genuine
train passengers , holding valid train tickets . As a corollary , convert all ,
currently UNRESERVED compartments into RESERVED compartments . Just do NOT
issue any ticket without the SEAT NO and BOGEY NO . boldly printed on each
ticket
