The Echo of Authenticity: AI, Deepfakes, and the Battle for Digital Identity
The recent news of YouTube removing hundreds of AI-generated Bollywood videos, especially in the wake of the legal battle initiated by Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan, has struck a profound chord with me. It brings to the forefront a conversation I've been engaging with for years: the critical need for ethical AI governance and the safeguarding of individual identity in our increasingly digital world. The very essence of authenticity is now being tested by the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, and it is a challenge we must confront with both technological prowess and thoughtful regulation.
I recall my discussions surrounding India's burgeoning role in AI, where I had often emphasized that our leadership in adoption must be coupled with an equally strong commitment to shaping its governance. As I reflected in my blog, "Smt Sitharamanji talks about AI" Smt Sitharamanji talks about AI, the message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi was clear: AI is not just a matter of national significance but a global responsibility, urging us to use it responsibly, ethically, and inclusively. I had brought up this thought years ago, underscoring the urgent need for ethical frameworks even as India pushed for widespread AI implementation. Now, seeing how deepfakes are directly impacting personal and public figures, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. This situation feels like a clear validation of those concerns and a renewed urgency to revisit those ideas about ensuring AI is ethical, inclusive, and trustworthy from its very foundation.
The core of this issue, as I see it, ties directly into the broader concept of digital identity. For years, I have advocated for a robust, unified system for managing citizen data, to streamline access to social security schemes, as seen in my blogs like "Thank You, Sumita Dawra" Thank You, Sumita Dawra and Thank You, Sumita Dawra (2). While those discussions centered on social welfare, the underlying principle holds true for protecting one's digital likeness. If we can envision a Single Unique Identity of Indian Citizens (SUIIC) to ensure seamless access to benefits, surely we must also extend that vision to safeguard personal integrity against malicious AI-generated content. The ability to create a false narrative or image with such ease fundamentally undermines trust and identity. The absence of a consolidated, verifiable digital identity infrastructure makes individuals vulnerable to such widespread digital manipulation.
The actions taken by YouTube, albeit after a legal push by the Bachchans, highlight the growing recognition of the problem. It is a step, but merely a reactive one. The conversation needs to shift towards proactive measures, not just in content removal but in establishing preventative safeguards. My long-standing belief in an "all-out and pervasive implementation" of robust digital infrastructure, which I discussed in "The digital path to a developed India" The digital path to a developed India, takes on new significance here. We need intelligent design and unwavering commitment to create digital ecosystems that are resilient against such misuse, empowering citizens with control over their digital personas.
The legal recourse sought by public figures is a powerful reminder that existing frameworks are struggling to keep pace with technological advancements. This is precisely why, years ago, I had emphasized the need for visionary leadership and inclusive policies to treat technology not as a luxury but as an intrinsic pillar of national progress. We must continue to invest in both technological solutions—like advanced detection systems—and comprehensive legal frameworks that protect individual personality rights and prevent the unauthorized use of one’s likeness to train AI models without consent. This is not just about celebrities; it's about every individual's right to control their digital representation.
The challenge of deepfakes and AI misuse is a stark manifestation of the complex ethical dilemmas that advanced technology presents. It reiterates the urgency of establishing clear boundaries, ensuring accountability for AI-generated content, and empowering individuals with the tools to verify or challenge what they see online. Only then can we truly harness the potential of AI while preserving the authenticity and integrity of human identity.

Hemen Parekh
