Digital Consent Pilot — A Vision Ahead of Its Time

===================================================

Subject: Congratulations on the Digital Consent Pilot — A Vision Ahead of Its Time

Chairperson & CEO,

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)

I hope this message finds you well.

I write both as a citizen and as a long-standing advocate for robust digital consent

mechanisms that genuinely empower users. I was delighted to read about TRAI’s

ongoing Digital Consent Acquisition (DCA) pilot — set to be completed by the

end of January — that moves India decisively toward a transparent and

consumer-centric consent framework for commercial communications.

This initiative — undertaken in collaboration with the Reserve Bank of India and

key industry partners — aims to transition away from fragmented, unverifiable

offline consents to a secure, interoperable digital consent registry. This has

far-reaching implications for reducing spam, protecting consumer data, and

restoring trust in digital communication channels. Press Information Bureau

📌 A Personal Reflection: Ideas Materializing

This development evokes parallels with themes I’ve been exploring over the years

in my own writing on digital consent and user-led privacy protections:

  • In my 2018 blog, I proposed mechanisms to protect citizens from misleading

  •  and non-transparent data practices and emphasised the need for statutory

  •  safeguards online. myblogepage.blogspot.com

  • Again, in 2023, I discussed evolving data rights and frameworks (such as

  •  international “SARAL” concepts simplifying consent and privacy controls) that

  •  put users unequivocally in control of how their data should be used.

The current TRAI pilot reflects exactly the kind of user-empowering

architecture I have voiced for years — where consent is clear, verifiable, and

meaningfully managed by the end-user. These are foundational elements of any

 truly secure digital ecosystem.

📣 Why This Matters

For millions of Indians, unsolicited promotional communications aren’t just a

nuisance — they are a data privacy and fraud risk. By embedding verified

digital consent into the core of telecom and financial outreach, TRAI is charting a

new trust frontier for the digital economy.

When fully implemented, this could become a global reference model for how

regulators balance consumer protection with digital innovation.

🙌 Heartfelt Congratulations

On behalf of many digital citizens and privacy advocates, I extend my sincere

congratulations to you and the entire team at TRAI. This initiative is not merely

 regulatory; it is transformational.

With Regards,
