Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Well begun is half done !

Economic Times ( 02 April ) carries following news :

India's drug regulatory body is creating a national digital database of pharmaceutical manufacturers and their medicines so that regulators can be more effective when acting on problems like drug shortages and quality issues,

Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) is finalising software for this and plans to amend rules for drugs and cosmetics to make it mandatory for manufacturers to regularly put details of their facilities and products in this database, they said

“Now, there is going to be a completely transparent system with proper data management,” said a senior government official, adding that the primary objective would be to get data on how many drug makers exist here

The new database would maintain names, addresses and licences of all manufacturers, therapeutic categories of their medicines and details like their dosages and forms, one of the sources said.

With this initiative , CDSCO has taken the first step to implement :

3D - Digital Delivery of Drugs ?  [  11  Oct  2015  ]

whose advantages , I had listed as follows :

ADVANTAGES :

*   Jobs / business of Chemists / Druggists saved

*   Great convenience for patients / no need to visit Drug Store

*   No chance of Chemist " mis-interpreting " doctor's handwriting !

*   Full History of

     #     Each Patient ( great benefit to Prescribing doctors )

     #    Each Drug    ( great benefit to Pharma Companies  )

     #    Each Chemist Shop  ( great benefit to Govt / AIOCD / Tax Dept )

     #    Each Doctor  ( great interest to All India Medical Association )

ARIHANT   travels   EAST  ?

Some 2,500 years ago , India witnessed the presence of two great teachers , Gautam Buddha and Arihant Mahavira , both of whom preached non – violence ( Ahimsa ) / peace and harmonious living, not only among the humans but extended to all creatures on the earth

Both are believed to be contemporaries , who lived in 5 BCE and travelled widely through India to spread Buddhism and Jainism

There is no historical record of Buddha ever having travelled abroad but over the following centuries , Buddhism spread beyond the borders of India and travelled east to reach as far as Japan and China , where it became a dominant religion . Even now , there are millions of Buddhists in China

Neither did Arihant  Mahavira leave the shores of India and Jainism ( his preaching ) remained confined to India . Until now  !

It seems , after 25 centuries , ARIHANT  has just reached China !

For context , here is an indication :

Residents of Shenzhen don’t dare jaywalk.

Since April 2017, this city in China’s Guangdong province has deployed a rather intense technique to deter jaywalking.

 Anyone who crosses against the light will find their face, name, and part of their government ID number displayed on a large LED screen above the intersection, thanks to facial recognition devices all over the city.

If that feels invasive, you don’t even know the half of it.

Now, Motherboard reports that a Chinese artificial intelligence company is partnering the system with mobile carriers, so that offenders receive a text message with a fine as soon as they are caught.

The system is just one cog in the vast surveillance machine that the Chinese government has been building over the last several years.

Its aim is in part public safety and security, but the information on citizens’ whereabouts and activities will also feed into China’s national social credit system

The social credit system, which will roll out in 2020, is intended to rate individuals according to a national scoring system for how trustworthy a citizen each person is.

 Citizens with a low score might be refused certain jobs, pay more for certain services, and according to China’s National Development and Reform Commission, even be banned from traveling.

According to Fortune, that travel restriction could kick in from a wide range of offenses, from spreading fake information about  terrorism  to  smoking on the train.

It seems China has cobbled together , an early version of ARIHANT ( - a hardware / software / communication / AI based , technology platform which I conceptualized in my following blogs :

Trade Wars :  Powered  by  Cyber  Wars  ?

A few weeks back , US President Donald Trump sounded the bugle of the trade war by levying hefty import duties on Steel – Aluminium – Solar Panels and declared his intention to raise import duties on some 1600 items being imported from China

Yesterday , China retaliated by imposing similar duties on $ 3 billion worth of imports from USA

Earlier , our country had imposed higher duties ( one item : 10 % on import of components of smart phones ) on several items , with a view to discourage imports and encourage local manufacture

Levying of a “ Safeguard Duty “ of 70 % on Solar Panels ( mostly imported from China ) , is under consideration

EU is considering  raising duties on import of consumer products from USA

All of this reminded me of the following “ introduction “ of a report  [ QUO  VADIS  ] which I submitted to the top management of Larsen and Toubro , in 1989 :

January 5, 1989

Mr. S.R.Subramaniam

CORPORATE DIVERSIFICATION

20th Century saw two world-wars between super-powers. The aim of both was territorial expansion. 21st Century will witness a similar war of global dimensions -but with a difference

It will be

*  a war of expansion of economic -territory involving nations,
    large and small

*  fought by mega-corporations

*  employing world-wide network of space-age technologies /
    Alliances / resources / markets.

*  unrestrained by national boundaries

*  without an end

It will be a business-war in which the unprepared will be wiped-out and even those who have made definite survival-plans will find going tough.

I am happy to enclose a report which goes beyond survival.

For many thousand L&T-ites, it will offer hope for growth in the 21st Century.

I suggest that the Corporate Management sets aside one full day during the forthcoming Strategic-Plan Meetings, to debate this report and take necessary decisions.

With kind regards,

H. C. Parekh

Ashok Leyland : On the double

Barely 10 weeks ago , I wrote :

where I talked about Ashok Leyland collaborating with Israeli firm

for developing Electric Vehicles, using a Metal-Air battery ( instead of the conventional Lithium-ion battery )

A battery that requires , “ no recharging “  !

So , no need of any Battery Recharging Infrastructure !

And 6 weeks ago , I sent following mail to Shri Nitin Gadkariji :

HolyGrail for Electric Vehicles

https://myblogepage.blogspot.com/2018/02/holy-grail-for-electric-vehicles.html

Now it seems, Ashok Leyland is trying to capture that “ Holy Grail “ , with minimum noise !

Here is a news that appeared in today’s Business Line :

  Ashok Leyland to set up plant for buses in AP “

Highlights :

Vinod K Dasari, MD & CEO, Ashok Leyland, said :

We will also produce electric vehicles at this plant.

Apart from making the entire range of buses of Ashok Leyland, the facility will include an electric vehicle development centre comprising a futuristic conveyor line, pilot assembly line and prototype development, Dasari explained.

“We are looking at huge unfolding opportunity for EVs in the country.

Our first batch of EV buses will be deployed in Ahmedabad where we have bagged the contract for 40 EV buses,” said Dasari.

WHAT  IS  THE   SIGNIFICANCE  ?

   India has decided to completely change-over to Electric Vehicles ( EV ) by 2030

·         Today , we have over 200 million petrol / diesel vehicles

·         Some 10 million more are getting added each year

·         That means , possibly some 300 million will get replaced by 2030 ( as EV )

·         Those 300 million EV will need , at least , 18 lakh  “ EV Battery Charging Stations “ to come up , all over the country ( - a “ Re-born Industry “  ? )

Today , we have , a total of 60,000 fuel retail pumps in India

On average , these take about 10 minutes to fill up a vehicle tank , but a EV battery charging station would take300 minutes ( 5 hours ) to charge a Li-ion battery ( ie : 30 times longer ! )

So , even if the vehicles are willing to queue up for 5 hours , that would require 30 times more EV charging stations ! 18 lakhs  !

Estimated current investment in this industry = Rs 6.5 lakh*crore

Now , if we need 30 times more EV charging stations ( as compared to present ), that would also mean that the investment required too , would go up 30 times !

That is Rs 195 lakh*crore  !

If Metal-Air Battery technology of Phinergy succeeds, not only will we save this cost but we will not need to wait for the Battery Charging Stations to come up FIRST , in order to motivate the buyers !

And most likely , vehicles powered by Metal – Air batteries will cost 25 % LESS than equivalent Petrol – Diesel vehicles  ! And no recurring cost of re-charging  !
