Then you may take up cudgels for the publishers

House Panel keen on a transparent deal for online news publishers   / BL / 22 Dec 2022

Extract :

In a boost for news publishers operating in the online news media market, the Standing Committee on Finance headed by Jayant Sinha has called for “regulatory provisions” to ensure that news publishers get a “fair share” of the digital advertising revenues earned by big tech platforms from the content being monetised by them.

This recommendation should be music to the ears of the diverse and numerous online news publishers in the country who get share of digital advertising revenues primarily from few leading Big Tech digital platforms such as Google and Facebook

The Committee is of the opinion that regulatory provisions are required to ensure that news publishers are able to establish contracts with Systemically Important Digital Intermediaries (SIDIs) through a “fair and transparent process”, said the Parliamentary Panel report.

The Panel has through this recommendation sought to address the information asymmetry that existed between the news publishers and the Big Tech platforms, sources said.

Till now, the key point of dispute was that the  news publishers  were in the “dark” as to how much the tech giants were earning from digital advertising through monetisation of the news publishers’ content.

News Publishers so far had no negotiating power with Big Tech and also did not know the size of the pie that is being cut for them to conclude that they were indeed getting a fair share of revenues, sources added.

In fact, the Indian Newspaper Society (INS), the representative organization of newspapers in the country, had in February last year knocked CCI doors filing a complaint of abuse of dominance by Google.

INS had alleged abuse of dominance by Google as regards News Referral Services and Google Ad Tech Services in the Indian online news media market.

Dear Shri Sinhaji,

I have no quarrel with you for saying that ,

Ø  BIG TECH are monetizing the news publishers’ content

Ø  the news publishers are in the dark about the revenue that BIG TECH earn by using the content first published by the publishers

Ø  News publishers are not getting a FAIR SHARE of this revenue

Ø  News publishers have NO NEGOTIATING POWER vis-à-vis BIG TECH

What pains me no end is that , while taking up the case of a FEW THOUSAND news publishers , you have maintained a TOTAL and OMINUS silence re the case of 900 MILLION ordinary ( and largely poor or middle class ) Indian Citizen, whose PRIVATE / PERSONAL data ( compiled by BIG TECH, without their knowledge or explicit permission ), is the main source of revenue for the BIG TECH

No one knows it better than yourself

Nor are you ignorant of the fact that BIG TECH are MONETIZING such private / personal data of 900 million citizen by selling it to the Advertisers

Our citizen have neither any knowledge about the extent of such MONETIZATION , nor have any NEGOTIATING POWER vis-à-vis Big Tech , to obtain a FAIR SHARE of such monetization

Dear Shri Sinhaji ,

I urge you to put people fist / publishers next

Please do not forget that without the people ( to read their papers ), publishers cannot exist

Let us also not forget that it is the “ size of readership “ which publishers use to get the Companies to advertise ( their main source of revenue )

Hence, in a manner of speaking, publishers themselves , have been monetising READER DATA all along – and using it only marginally to “ subsidize ” the sale price of a news paper to the readers

Over past few years, I have sent many emails to our Cabinet Ministers , urging them to evolve a fool-proof method to get the BIG TECH to compensate its users for selling their personal data

Personal data is “ owned “ by the users and they must be enabled to monetize the same

It is time for you to stand up for the POOR PEOPLE of India

You have been given that rare “ second chance “ to enable each user to get

a monthly “ compensation “ of Rs 30,000 , from those DATA THIEVES By

 implementing :

SARAL …………………………………………………………………[ 10 Feb 2019 ]

Digital Dividend from Demographic Data ………..[ 14 Feb 2019 ]

You have a UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY to “ GARIBI HATAO “ before

the 2024 general elections, without a burden of a single Rupee on the

 Exchequers

And, you need NOT include this item in BJP’s Sankalp Patra , for fear of being

 treated as a FREEBIE

I urge you to forward this email to all the members of your committee and seek their

 opinion on my following suggestions
