Services Export : the Silver Lining

Context :

Govt bets high services export can trim CAD   /  TNN  /  17  Nov  2022

Extract :

The government is hoping to narrow the current account deficit due to a continued increase in SERVICES EXPORTS, which rose over 40 % to $ 28.6 billion in October, according to official data

India has traditionally had a trade surplus on the SERVICES front , which has helped narrow the overall trade deficit.

What is providing confidence to the government is a pick-up in SERVICES  EXPORT at a time when merchandise exports are slowing down

During the first half of the current financial year, SERVICES EXPORTS have increased 31 % to $ 181.4 billion, while imports were up 37 % at over $ 106 billion

My Take :

Dear Shri Ashwini Vaishnawji – Shri Rajeev Chandrasekharji – Shri Piyush Goyalji :

Even as we continue our efforts to make India a Manufacturing Hub for entire world, I urge you to :

Ø  Leveraging our Engineering Talent …………………….13  Dec  2018

Extract :

But , if “ Manufacturing Sector “ and “ Service Sector “ were two horses in the

GDP race , I would bet on the “ Service Sector “, especially from the following

 view-points :

        #  “ Capital Investment per Job created “ would be much lower ( may be 10

              % of  Mfg. Sector ? )

       #    Jobs created would be much higher  ( may be 5 times of  Mfg sector ? )

       #    Time ( to create those jobs ) would be much shorter ( months instead of

             years )

  #     Export of  “ Services “ are much easier than export of  “ Goods “

      #     Quality of our “ Services “ are comparable – or even better – than from

             other countries

      #     We will , soon , have the desired quality / quantity of Internet connectivity ,

             all over India

      #    We are turning out thousands of Graduates  each year though some need “

            Skilling “

      #    Salaries of our Engineers are 20 - 25 % of similar hires in USA – EU – Japan

             – UK etc

Now consider this :

·         By employing 5 lakh engineers , India’s “ Tech R&D Firms “ earned $ 22 billion

          . That works to a billing of $ 44,000 per man-year of R&D ( Export of Services )

I presume that the “ Manpower Cost “ constitute approx. 50 % of Billing Rate

( rest being OVERHEADS and MARGIN )

·         Hence , Indian R&D firms must be paying an average of $ 22,000 per year to

its employees ( approx. Rs 1.2 lakh per month )

             { Refer :  Employee Expenses as %age of Sales   /   05   July   2022 }

·         As against this , both , Indian as well as American firms pay ( on an average )

         , $ 88,000 per year to H1 B  visa holders

With this kind of “ Cost Advantage “ , is there a possibility to do better than

the projected earnings of $ 40 billion in 2020 ?

It is high time our Policy Makers launch a new initiative ( of Export of

      Intellectual  Property ) , called :

INDIA  :  the  BRAIN  FACTORY  of  THE  WORLD

During an Interview with Business Line ( 16 April 2016 ) , the then CEO of Infosys

 , Vishal Sikka , said :

“ We have to re-imagine the notion of services

In support of my belief  in the potential re-imagination of this “ Service Sector “ ,

allow me to quote Peter Diamandis

  {  https://www.diamandis.com/blog/topic/web-3-0  ]  :

The Spatial Web is also giving way to “virtual company headquarters” and

completely virtualized companies, where employees can work from

home or any place on the planet

·        Delocalize with VR, and you can now hire anyone with Internet access ( right

next door or on the other  side of the planet )

·        Web 3.0 is changing the way we work, where we work and who we work with.

Digital Data Protection Bill

Dear Shri Rajeev Chandrasekharji,

Just came across following news report :

Revised data protection law ready, will ease compliance     /

Companies misusing user data will face “punitive and financial" consequences once the proposed data protection law comes into effect, Rajeev Chandrashekhar, minister of state for information technology, said in a tweet on Tuesday.

“India’s #DigitalDataProtection bill will put a stop to this, & ensure that any platform or intermediary that does this will face punitive & financial consequences."

According to the two officials cited above, the updated version of the bill will deal with personal data and leave out non-personal data. Additionally, it will also deal with digital data, that is, data obtained through digital means, such as apps and websites, they added.

Dear Shri Chandrasekharji,

The greatest MISUSE of USER DATA , by companies ( especially , online BIG TECH social media ) is :

“ Without explicit permission from users, compiling and SELLING that data to Advertisers for BILLIONS of dollars and NOT COMPENSATING those users, even one penny “

I hope , in this regard , you have read my following suggestions ( sent , at least 15 times in past 30 months ) and that you will incorporate the same in your revised bill :

Digital Dividend from Demographic Data [ 4 D ]………… …………….[ 14 Feb 2019 ]

Pre-installation of C-DAC app store to be made mandatory  / The Hindu Business Line  / 6 Oct 2022

Pre-installed apps on mobile phones will be stopped

In a major push to promote an indigenous digital ecosystem for mobile phones, the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) has firmed up an action plan to develop, promote and ensure mandatory usage of app store developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing ( C-DAC ).

In a meeting convened last month, it was decided that to ensure fair competition in the mobile phone market, pre-installed apps may be stopped, and the matter was forwarded to the Industrial Promotion Electronics & Hardware Group (IPHW) in MeitY for action.

Further pre-installation of app store developed by MeitY through its R&D arm, C-DAC, is to be made mandatory in mobile phones, said sources.

Meanwhile, MeitY has convened a review meeting this month to assess the progress made on the action plan .

For mandatory pre-installation of Google apps, the European Commission had imposed a fine on Google and the CCI is also looking into the issue.

Earlier, in 2019, the CCI had prima facie found Google’s restrictions on OEMs ( requiring them to pre-install certain Google apps ) amounting to imposition of “unfair conditions”, whereby Google reduced the ability and incentive of device manufacturers to develop and sell devices operated on alternate versions of Android.

This would be wonderful and I believe, a large majority of mobile owners would

welcome it

Today, all mobiles come pre-installed with hundreds of Apps ( including those for

which , you do not even get to see an icon ) . I remember my Samsung mobile

 frequently showing following notification :

“ Updating 334 apps on your device “

Most people hardly bother to even find out if they can delete these pre-installed

CCI Slaps INR 1,338 Cr Penalty On Google For Abuse Of Dominant Position

Lashing out at Google, the watchdog directed it to not force OEMs to pre-install its proprietary applications or decide their placement. It also warned Google against linking licensing of Play Store to OEMs with the requirement of pre-installing Google search services and other apps.

Besides, Google was specifically told to not deny access to its Play Services APIs and also warned against offering any incentives, monetary or otherwise, to OEMs for entering into exclusivity contracts

The CCI also barred the US-based company from restricting uninstallation of pre-installed apps by users on their phones.

In one of the biggest takeaways for the developer community, the CCI directed Google to not restrict distribution of apps through side-loading.

Side-loading refers to directly installing Android apps via an APK, rather than going to the Play Store. While side-loading comes with its own set of security challenges, the near total monopoly of Google in the app marketplace segment hands the tech giant overwhelming power.

“Google shall allow the users, during the initial device setup, to choose their default search engine for all search entry points. Users should have the flexibility to easily set as well as easily change the default settings in their devices, in minimum steps possible,” added the competition watchdog.

You.com is a new search engine that is powered by artificial intelligence. And it’s a search engine that gives users control over when and how their data is collected.

You’s interface is clutter-free, focusing on the results, while not delivering a single ad

The other great thing about You is the search engine never plans to sell ads on or trade its users’ data to boost revenue

One unique niche that You.com is catering to is software developers.

A developer can easily and seamlessly search through repositories of code right from the site’s search interface.

For developers, this is a godsend.

No more jumping to a dozen code repositories (i.e., GitHub, Stack Overflow, etc.) to find that one code snippet they need to complete a project.

Why In The Future, Privacy Will Be A Thing Of The Past      /  Medium  /  14  Nov  2022

Extract :

Our information is everywhere. We have allowed it to be everywhere without choice, in a lot of cases. To open a bank account we have no choice but to supply all our information. It is the same with Government departments. The tax office knows almost everything about you and so does the medicare system. So how can it possible get any worse.

Looking to the future, government agencies and law enforcement agencies could deploy more sophisticated tracking devices. This includes the much anticipated  smart dust.

These are tiny sensors that would monitor practically anything, from light and temperature to chemicals and vibrations.

These particles could be sprinkled around Earth and function as the eyes and ears of the planet. In conjunction with powerful data mining algorithms, virtually everything we do would be monitored.

Recycling Plastic Bottle ? How about Re-Using Imaginatively ?

Green Initiative: Indian Oil Corporation to recycle 20 million PET bottles annually for eco-friendly employee uniforms

Extract :

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the nation's largest oil firm, will recycle 20 million discarded mineral water, cold drink and other PET bottles annually to make eco-friendly uniforms for staff that man its petrol pumps and LPG distributor agencies, its chairman said.

In a glittering ceremony titled 'Unbottled - Towards a Greener Future', IOC Chairman SM Vaidya launched a special 'sustainable and green' uniform exclusively designed for nearly 3 lakh fuel station attendants and LPG gas delivery personnel of the company.

Empty PET packaging discarded by the consumer after use becomes PET waste. IOC will deploy an agency to collect such bottles - 20 million annually - and convert them into yarn to weave or knit fabric. This will then be supplied to a textile company for manufacturing uniforms for IOC's petrol pump attendants and LPG gas agency staff.

IOC is the first Indian firm to directly venture into the recycling of PET bottles.

The dress materials for these uniforms have been extracted from recycled polyester derived from the processing of used and discarded PET bottles. This initiative would support recycling about 405 tonnes of PET bottles, equivalent to offsetting over 20 million bottles yearly.

"About 8 million metric tonnes of plastic enter the ocean annually, and about 150 million metric tonnes circulate in our marine ecosystems. At this pace, by 2050, there will be more plastics in the sea than fish. The conversion of plastic bottles into fabric is a beautiful example of how diligent handling of problems opens doors to new opportunities," he noted.

Under this green initiative of IOC, used plastic bottles are shredded into flakes and then melted into micro-pellets. These micro-pellets are converted into yarns for weaving these green clothing.

Its production requires almost 60 per cent less energy, and CO2 emissions are reduced by nearly one-third compared to virgin polyester. Even when these clothes wear out, the used Polycotton uniforms can be mechanically recycled and converted into low-end quilts, blankets or even high-end denim fabric. The fabric conforms to Global Recycling Standard Certification.

Dear Shri Vaidyaji,

Congratulations on this laudable Green Initiative

I urge you to consider this :

Basic needs of a human is :  ROTI  -  KAPDA  -  MAKAN

Your team of brilliant scientists have found a way to recycle PET bottles into

KAPDA

At this moment, recycling PET bottles into ROTI seems far fetched

But after “ shredding used plastic bottles into flakes and melting into micro-pellets

“ , how about using those pellets to mould NEW plastic bottles which poor people

can collect and use these to build a MAKAN ?

Did you say MAKAN ?

Of course !  - and FREE of COST too  !

Here is my earlier e-mail on “ HOW “ :

Ø  Turning a Threat into an Opportunity ? ……………….[ 23 Dec 2017 ]

Extract :

By all means , discourage manufacture / use of ROUND shaped plastic bottles

 Encourage ( Start-Ups : take note ) , manufacture of SQUARE shaped bottles ,

having square and flat TOPS ( lids ) and BOTTOMS

·    Standardize the SQUARENESS of these bottles ( of different widths ) in such a way that :

#    These are STACKABLE ( one on top of another )

#    The smaller ones can slide inside the bigger ones ( like plastic garden chairs )

#    Flat sides carry vertical grooves for “ nesting “ one bottle over another ( like

      lego )

#   Just like screw-able “ lid “ , consider screw-able “ bottom “ as well . This will

Enable removing those “ lids “ and “ bottoms “ and screw-up the central part

of the bottle onto another bottle , to create a “ Column “ or a “ Beam “ of a

      house

I have a feeling that this innovation will , not only solve the problem of discarded

plastic bottles but , at the same time , provide cheap / durable / small ( single

story ) houses for millions of our poor homeless , who will be happy to pick up the

discarded bottles from everywhere and build those simple houses ( roof and walls

) on a DIY basis
