Gaining Ground : Virtually

Context :

Virtual Tech Captive Centres Gain Ground  /  Eco Times /  10 Feb 2021

Extract :

Ø  Multinational corporations have begun setting up virtual technology centres in India where entire teams work remotely

Ø  Management consultancy Zinnov – which helps foreign firms set up Global In-house Centres [ GICs ] or captive units in India – said four companies had set up their centres virtually in the county recently

Ø  “ The pandemic has caused a large portion of the onsite outsourced talent to work from their respective homes. This has resulted in the distributed work-force model with a proven success record. Companies are leveraging this learning and looking for alternatives across the world at reasonable costs “, said Amita Goyal , principal and head of GCoE practice, Zinnov

Ø  India is a the obvious choice for most companies since GIC has been a tried and tested model, with a mature ecosystem and required skillsets.

Ø  Alongside, there has been a shift towards moving high-tech , innovation-driven roles to India, as companies grapple with a shortage of tech talent in their home markets, especially in US

Ø  But then , in today's totally interconnected World , why should it be necessary for housing 10 / 20 / 50 persons in ONE place , under ONE roof , for collaborating on execution of COMMON tasks ?

Ø  I am sure, in any given ONE square km of a small town , there are 50 unemployed - and quite possibly , GRADUATE - youngsters , who would be more than happy to " work from home

Ø  They will be happy to set aside , in their homes , a 5 feet by 5 feet space , as a " Home Work Station "

Ø  Now, that subsidy of " Rs 1 lakh per seat " that the IT Ministry has promised , is quite sufficient to set up a :

      VIRTUAL  CALL  CENTER ,

by connecting those 50 youngsters through a , VPN ( VIRTUAL PRIVATE

      NETWORK )

Ø  And since these youngsters are working from their homes , they can be asked to work in 3 shifts of 8 hours each , providing " Round the Clock " service to customers !

Ø        Why give a subsidy to a prospective " OWNER " of a Call Centre ?

Why not give it directly ( DBT / Direct Benefit Transfer ) to those youngsters ?

Ø  Of course , this subsidy transfer should take place , only AFTER , the Call Centre Owner , certifies that it has entered into a " Contractual Retainer-ship " with a particular youngster

Ø  I would request you to consider the following aspects of my suggestion :

      *    No new building premises needed

      *    All technologies for a VPN, are existing / well proven  / reasonably

priced / easy to implement quickly

      *   MSPs / ISPs and your own Ministry are pushing internet connections to

           every corner of India

     *  Moving from " Ownership of Assets " to " Assets as Service " scenario (

         ala Uber-Ola-Airbnb etc )

    *  Moving from " Employment " to " Self Employment " with direct transfer

        of subsidy to beneficiary

    *  Has the potential to raise India's share in global BPO business from

        current 36 % to 50 % in one year

   *  Can earn billions of dollars in foreign exchange

   *  It would become a LIVING PROOF that DIGITAL INDIA can help our un-

employed graduates to earn a living

  *  Google  /  Microsoft  / Facebook , would be happy to help since " Next

Billion " is their topmost agenda

In an age where the " Fast and Furious " are out to overtake the " Slow and

Steady " , the meek are unlikely to inherit the earth !

POST SCRIPT ( as on 12  April   2018 ) :

Ø           >   Over 280 million LED bulbs were distributed to consumers in India by

Energy Efficiency Services Limited ( EESL ) under Unnati Jyoti by

Affordable LEDs for All ( UJALA ) as on December 19th 2017, and 524.3

million LED bulbs were sold by private players till October 2017.

Ø          >    That is 804 million LED lamps , each capable of streaming internet ,

through Li Fi technology ( at 1 Gb speed ) over the “ Work Stations “ of

80 million youth , if we implement  “ Broadband over Power Line “

                  technology !

I urge Shri Ravi Shankar Prasadji to explore the possibility of my suggestion

Now consider this :

        >    By employing 5 lakh engineers , India’s “ Tech R&D Firms “ earned $ 22

                billion . That works to a billing of $  44,000 per man-year of R&D

               ( Export of Services )

              >    I presume that the “ Manpower Cost “ constitute approx. 50 % of

Billing Rate ( rest being OVERHEADS and MARGIN )

             >     Hence , Indian R&D firms must be paying an average of $ 22,000 per

year to its employees ( approx. Rs 1.2   lakh per month )

            >    As against this , both , Indian as well as American firms pay ( on an

                  average ),  $ 88,000 per year to H1 B  visa holders

With this kind of “ Cost Advantage “ , is there a possibility to do better

than the projected earnings of $ 40 billion in 2020 ?

Ø  The government on Thursday announced simplified guidelines for Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and IT Enabled Services (ITES) players to reduce the compliance burden for the industry and facilitate ' Work from Home ' and ' Work from Anywhere '.

Ø  The new rules for 'Other Service Providers' (OSPs) would create a friendly-regime for 'Work from Home' and 'Work from Anywhere' while removing several reporting and other obligations for such companies.

Ø  OSPs are entities providing applications services, IT enabled services or any kind of outsourcing services using telecom resources. The term refers to BPOsKPOs (Knowledge Process Outsourcing), ITEScall centres, amongst others.

Ø  "India's IT sector is our pride. The prowess of this sector is recognized globally. We are committed to doing everything possible to ensure a conducive environment for growth and innovation in India. Today's decisions will especially encourage young talent in the sector !,"  Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

Ø  " The reform will certainly unleash the potential of our talented youth by making India as a preferred destination for Information and Knowledge Outsourcing Industry and would further the vision of 'AtmaNirbhar Bharat'," the release added.

Ø   Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tweeted,

“ Today @narendramodi Govt has taken a major reform initiative to

liberalize the regulatory regime for   “Other Service Provider". This will

boost the IT/ ITeS/ BPO industry and create a friendly regime for

        Work from Home in India."
