Who needs Fulfillment Centres [ FC ] ? Not Reliance Retail

Akhil Saxena, VP-Customer Fulfillment, Amazon India , says  :

“ We have more than 50 fulfillment centres across 13 States, with a combined storage space  close to 20 million cubic feet

We closed 2018, with  a 1.5 times growth in storage capacity from the previous year

Our fulfillment centre presence in India has grown from one in Bhiwandi when we launched Amazon.in , in June 2013 to 50 such buildings in the past 5 years “

For those 50 FC , this could translate into ,on an average of  400,000 sq ft floor-space area

Now , each such FC might have a “ Civil / Electrical Construction Cost “ of , an average of Rs 2,000 / sq ft

And, very likely, another Rs 2000 / sq ft for internal stacking arrangements / fork-lift trucks etc , taking the total cost to Rs 4,000 per sq ft

Rs 160 Cr for each of those FC ( Rs 4000 / sq ft x 400,000 sq ft )

Rs 8,000 Cr for those 50 FC

====================

But Reliance Retail thinks :

“ If we follow the rules of Amazon , then to cover entire India , we may need to construct / equip , may be , 100 FCs , costing Rs 16,000 Crore

And these may be 20 Km away from a customer ordering an item online

Why not treat each of the 4 MILLION Kirana shops , spread across the country as our FC ?

Each of these Kirana shop is , on an average , 20 ft x 20 ft ( =  400 sq ft  of floor space )

So , I get 400 sq ft ( per store ) x 4 Million stores = 1600 million sq ft of storage floor-space  - as against 20 million sq ft of floor space of Amazon’s 50 FC !

80 times of what Amazon has built , and without spending one rupee !

And, Reliance Retail tells those 4 Million Kirana store owners :

Dear Modiji

( in Gujarat, a Kirana Store owner is known as a “ Modi “ ) ,

#   I will arrange to deliver all of your SKU , directly from manufacturers, and on “ consignment basis “, so you do
     not need to pay anything

No need for you to register as “ B2B bulk Buyer “ on  Amazon Business “ Business-to-Business online
    Marketplace

#   My system will relieve you of “ Inventory Carrying Cost “. That means, no blocking funds in working
capital . Remember, for storing your goods in  Amazon FC , you pay a hefty “ Inventory Cost “

#   My delivery persons ( - and, someday soon , DRONES ), will pick up goods from your store . So, you need not
pay any “ Delivery  Charges “ – as demanded by Amazon when you store your goods in its FC

#   Our hardware/software installed at your premises will take care of all GST formalities ( mentioning your GST
number on invoices / charging GST amount / filing GST return etc ) . No need to worry on this count !

#   Even if your SKUs are only “ Food /  Grocery Items “, you don’t need to go to Amazon Retail India .

Our Reliance Retail platform is designed to cater to such “ Roadside-Footpath Sellers

Our platform will also cater to anyone  operating from his / her home !

This “ Reliance Jio GigaFibre “ based technology will enable millions of  “ Unemployed “ to become “ Self
     Employed “

Congratulations , Dr Anil Sahsrabudhe

Congratulations , Dr Anil Sahsrabudhe

What for ?
For taking a truly revolutionary step which will transform the “ Entrepreneur Eco System “ in   India

What step ?
AICTE ( All India Council for Technical Education ) just issued following directive to to all 10,400  technical institutes – including engineering colleges and universities :

#   Set up Incubation Centres ( compulsory )

#  Arrange frequent interaction of students and faculty members with industrialists,
entrepreneurs, alumni and other key stakeholders , to inspire students to take up
INNOVATION PROJECTS that can later be fleshed out into START UPS

Any thoughts on how this directive should get translated into explicit ACTION PLAN ?

I urge Dr Sahasrabudhe to consider my following E mail , sent earlier to all  Policy Makers :

[  TEN MILLION ENTREPRENEURS ?     19  Oct  2015  ]

Extract :

Here is how we can produce a generation of ENTREPRENEURS , 5 years from now ( if we start NOW ) :

*   Introduce " Entrepreneurship " as an mandatory subject in High Schools
     and Colleges

*   Each such School / College to be " Adopted " by a Corporate ( CSR ? )

*   Each adopting Corporate will bear the full expense of running this
course ( Teachers' Salaries etc )

*   Such expense to be tax-exempt ( or offset as Corporate CSR obligation )

*   Exams to be in the form of presentation by teams of final year students
     on,

" HERE   IS   A   BUSINESS   I   PLAN   TO   START "

*   Presentations to be judged by Panels of Venture Capitalists / Angel
     Investors / Incubators etc

*   Winning teams ( 1st / 2nd / 3rd  prize ) , to be offered funds by the
Panel Members ( as seen in some TV programs )

Fund amounts should be small ( Max Rs 100 lakhs ) and preference to
be given to projects involving healthcare / education / manufacturing /
     agriculture / food processing etc

*   Winning Teams , setting up Start Ups with these VC funds , to be
encouraged to hire graduating students from the non-winning teams

This " encouragement " to be in the form of reimbursement of salaries of
such hires ( only such hires ), under  " Employment Generation Subsidy "
from concerned State Government , where this Start Up gets registered ,
since , employment is a State Subject

Such Salary-reimbursements  will be for first 3 years of Start Up

To create an entire  GENERATION of ENTREPRENEURS , we need to start at the roots

Some years later , when this FIRST generation becomes parents of their own 10 year olds , those SECOND generation youngsters will have entrepreneurship in their genes !

This is one way of preparing a GM ( genetically modified ) Generation , to which , there ought to be all round support

Census 2021 : an Unprecedented Opportunity

What opportunity ?
#  To settle , once  and for all, disputes re accuracy / up-to-date-ness of ,
·          Number of Employed / Unemployed / Self Employed

How ?
By capturing this data in Census 2021
May need some revision of “ Job-Work “ related questions No 15  till 22 in the  current Census Form

Would that not be a massive exercise ?
Sure . That is why Census is carried out only once in 10 years – with last one in 2011

For 2021 Census exercise, it is planned to mobilize 33 lakh enumerators who will go door to door to collect data by interviewing families ( notification already issued )

In 2011 Census, “ Housing Census “ took 6 months, followed by actual “ people census “ for 3 weeks

But would not “ Employment Data “  captured become outdated within a few months ?
Absolutely – considering that Census is conducted only once in 10 years !

Then how do you say :  ‘ Up-to-date-ness ?
Thanks to,

Shri Rajiv Gauba – Home Secretary  [  hshso@nic.in  /  r.gauba@nic.in ] , and

Shri Vivek Joshi – Registrar General of India ( RGI ) [  rgi.rgi@nic.in  ],

Herein lies that “ Unprecedented Opportunity “

Here is how :

#     In Census Form , add following optional fields :

·          Aadhar ID

·          PAN

·          Mobile Phone Number

·          E Mail ID– to be treated as “ User ID “ for accessing own data for EDIT purpose

·          Password – for EDITING own data, online , at any time

·          Voter ID

#     Once the enumerators have uploaded all 2021 Census data in Online Database, enable each
Registered person to Update / Edit , his / her data , by logging in

#     Personal Data may be updated as follows :
·          Once a year ( Mandatory ) – some service deprived if he / she does not update
·          As often as personal data changes

Hey ! Why would anyone take the trouble to update his personal data ?

Normally not but he would if following INCENTIVES are offered :

[  A  ]     Getting a Job

“ Suitable Job Alerts “ on Mobile from National Career Service

A “ Job Alert on Mobile – JAM “ Mobile App will allow a person to “ Apply Online “ against any job alert by simply touching “ Send my Resume “ .

This feature will motivate, each and every unemployed to maintain his / her data in CENSUS FORM, always up-to-date !

To achieve this, “ Submit Resume “ form and “ Post Job “ form on all major job portals and National Career Service portal, will need to be identical ( or fields mapped )

I have no doubt that if appealed by Shri Rajnath Singhji, job portals would happily synchronize their forms , to facilitate such huge economic empowerment of millions of unemployed

[  B  ]     Getting Money

Money is the most powerful incentive for doing any work even if that requires keeping one’s data up-to-date

For millions of poor / middle class Indians ( ie: 99 % of our population ), “ personal data “ is their only

wealth, which has remained “ untapped / latent “ so far

If “ Personal Data “ is the “ New Oil “, question is :

How can we enable an individual to “ Sell “ his ( Census ) data for money ? I have detailed that process in :

                   Digital Dividend from Demographic Data [ 4 D ]

This would be the greatest “ Incentive “ for 99 % of the citizens to keep their data up-to-date at all times, since it would provide a steady monthly income of Rs 50,000  !

[  C   ]     Getting Skills

Experts and laypersons, all agree that millions of youth remain unemployed since they lack the requisite
          SKILLS

Let Census 2021 form , list all the SKILLS for which HR Ministry has developed “ Online Skilling / Reskilling /
          Upskilling “ modules .

Ask the “ Respondent “ to select modules in which he wants to be trained

Respondents submitting such personal “ My Training Needs “ data, will get priority for delivery ( FREE ) of
an AR/VR headset through which he / she can “ access “ these modules. For working details, look up :

          Thank You , Prakashbhai ( Javadekarji )

[  D  ]     Getting Rewards

Based on the number of “ Data Updates “ in a year, offer following rewards :
·           Income Tax Rebate
·           Free Wi-Fi access
·           Mudra Loan eligibility
·           Piped Water connection
·           LPG Cylinders
·           Priority in delivery of all government subsidies / benefits ( DBT ) / services

For confirmation, read :

Seven In Ten Consumers In India Willing To Share Significant Personal Data

=====================================================================

What would be the “ Road Map “ to  implement this suggestion ?

·          Redesign the Census Form and get wide acceptance of the same

·          Redesign the “ Data Entry “ and  “ Data Edit “ software

·          Design “ Data Access Permission “ software which will enable a Citizen to grant different levels of “ access “ to “ Daughter Databases “ ( see Schematic Diagram below ), by appropriate selection in Census Form

·          Get job portals to redesign their forms , described earlier – as also develop “ Job Alert on Mobile –JAM “ app

·          By Dec 2019 , run a trial ( Pilot Project ) and carry out necessary modifications to Census Form
