A Necessary Transformation

As I have often reflected in my writings, when systems falter, the imperative is not merely to patch the cracks but to redesign the foundation. We are now witnessing this essential process within the National Testing Agency (NTA), which has embarked on a comprehensive institutional rebuild.
Following the recommendations of the High-Level Committee of Experts chaired by K. Radhakrishnan, the NTA is taking decisive steps to overhaul its academic, operational, and technological capabilities. This is a bold move to restore the sanctity of our national examination system, and it is a reminder that even established institutions must be willing to dismantle their shortcomings to serve the future better.
Strengthening the Core
The current recruitment drive, which includes four General Manager positions and sixteen Young Professionals, signals a shift toward specialized, accountable leadership. These roles are specifically designed to address the vulnerabilities that have recently surfaced:
- Assessment Research and Psychometrics: Moving toward AI-assisted assessment and sophisticated normalisation to ensure fairness.
- Test Centre Network Operations: Improving quality control and accessibility across five hundred cities.
- Information Security: Establishing a round-the-clock Security Operations Centre as a core priority.
- Vigilance, Investigation, and Forensics: Creating an internal mechanism to deter malpractice and enforce the new laws effectively.
The Role of Expert Guidance
The path forward is being charted by some of our nation's most capable minds. It is heartening to see a task force led by Nandan Nilekani, whose expertise in digital infrastructure has been transformative for India. His involvement in steering the examination reforms underscores the government’s commitment to integrating technology with transparency. Just as we must embrace the digital era, we must also ensure that our systems are built upon a bedrock of integrity—a theme I have long championed as essential for our collective progress.
