PSSU beat me to the draw !

PSSU = Petlad Sojitra SaurUrja Utpadak Sahakari Mandli Ltd

Here is how :

Now, milk district Anand taps the Sun  /  Times of India ( Mumbai Edition ) / 24 Oct 2022

Copy from PressReader :

Five years ago, Mahesh Manibhai Patel, a farmer with 11 ‘vigha’ land in Gujarat’s Anand district, used to spend sleepless nights because his village got electricity for only eight hours, often late in the evening or at night.

Now, he can draw water 12 hours a day in the daytime. He not only gets a good night’s sleep, but also earns a couple of lakh rupees every year by selling surplus electricity.

The revolution in Maheshbhai’s life is part of a new cooperative movement sweeping through Anand, which is home to Amul and the birthplace of India’s White Revolution.

In 2018, the world’s first solar cooperative Petlad Sojitra Saururja Utpadak (PSSU) Sahkari Mandali Limited – started in Anand with a seed capital of just Rs 1,100.

The idea was to replicate Amul’s cooperative model in the solar energy field.

Four years on, PSSU’s turnover has touched Rs 12 crore. More importantly, it has inspired seven other solar ‘mandalis’ (cooperatives) in a cluster of 18 villages covering 22 sq-km in Anand district.

After meeting the villages’ irrigation needs PSSU has enough solar power left over to supply the state grid.

It has also started taking commercial contracts for installing solar panels in the region. PSSU’s three agriculture feeders at Ishnav (Mahesh-bhai’s village), Trambovad and Ashapuri villages generate 24,000 units daily and supply electricity to 388 farmers.

In 2019, the Ishnav feeder was India’s first agriculture feeder run by a solar cooperative.

“We had started with the motto to replicate the success that the Amul model has achieved in the milk business. Amul Dairy too started its journey with just 250 litres of milk,” said Tejash Patel, founder and chairman of the PSSU mandali.

“We utilised the Surya Shakti Kisan (SKY) scheme launched by the Gujarat government in June 2018. The SKY scheme enables farmers to generate electricity for their captive consumption and sell the surplus power to the grid. Under the scheme, solar panels are provided to farmers as per their load requirements,” Tejash-bhai said.

The farmers got 30% subsidy each from the Gujarat government and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

They also got 35% of the funds as a loan from Nabard.

They had to pay the remaining 5% themselves, so they took a loan of Rs 3.5 crore from the Kheda District Madhya Sahkari Bank.

Tejash-bhai said they paid off the loan four months after launching the pilot project.

Now the farmers will get free electricity from their solar systems for 22 years and also earn from the sale of surplus units. The cooperative’s members can expect to earn Rs 45,000-Rs 2.5 lakh per annum from electricity.

The solar movement is changing people’s lives.

“Since availability of both electricity and water to irrigate farms was an issue, I used to cultivate only wheat or millets – crops that do not require much water,” Mahesh-bhai said. “But since I have installed a 50hp solar pump, I can draw water for 12 hours during the day. I have started cultivating highyielding crops like tomato, chilli and tobacco, and earn Rs 7.5 lakh per annum, as against Rs 3 lakh from wheat and millets earlier.” That’s not counting his earnings from the sale of surplus electricity units.

The solar cooperative is also generating employment.

“We have 23 employees, including engineers, who have executed many commercial projects in Gujarat. Our major clients are the dairy cooperative societies of Amul Dairy in Petlad, Sojitra, Tarapur, Khambhat, Umreth and other villages of Anand and Kheda districts, apart from Panchmahals District Agriculture Produce Market Committee and Panchmahals District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited,” said Tejash-bhai.

My  Take  :

Ø  A Tale of Two States ………………………………………………[  28  Oct  2020 ]

Extract :

Here is a broad / conceptual frame-work :

Ø  Introduce “ Co-operative Farming of Solar Power / CFSP “ { call it a kind of “ Contract Farming “ }

-( incorporate this into just released FARM LAWS to encourage setting-up of “

Solar Power Farmers Cooperative Society “, along the lines of Dairy Farmers’

   AMUL Milk Cooperative Society )

Ø  Under CFSP, provide 30 % Capital Cost Subsidy to companies setting up large ( > 500 MW ) Solar Farms in remote areas ( eg : desert areas of Kutch – Spiti – Lahul – Ladakh etc , which have a potential to generate 315 GW of Solar power )

Read : https://myblogepage.blogspot.com/2018/08/from-ladakh-with-love-and-sun-shine.html

Ø  1 MW of ( grid ) solar will need 100,000 sq ft of solar panels ( 1 KW will need 100 sq ft )

Ø  The estimated cost of 1 MW solar power plant is approx. Rs 4 - 6 crore.

Ø  That works out to approx. Rs 400 - 600 / sq ft of Capital cost for Solar panels

Ø  Solar Farm company can “ Sell “ ownership rights of solar panels to individuals in modules of 1000 sq ft, ( costing Rs 4- 6 lakh per module ) . These rights can be sold / transferred to any buyer, only with prior permission of the Solar Farm Company concerned

Ø  Each module ( of 1,000 sq ft ) will generate 10 KW of power, which Company will feed into a NATIONAL GRID ( free ) .

Ø  Each such Co-operative Company can reserve / own by itself, 30 % of Solar Panels for generating power for sale in free market

Ø  My nearest DISCOM will supply me those 10 KW, free of cost ( ie: deduct from my monthly usage ) . Any excess over my actual consumption, to be credited to my account

Ø  Depending upon my usage / need , I as an individual CO-OPERATIVE OWNER , can “ buy “ any number of STANDARD MODULES, and from any number of Cooperative Farming companies or other Co-op Owners

Ø  This set-up will require NATIONAL SOLAR EXCHANGE in which ALL discoms will be mandated to become members

IIT-Madras develops screen tech that lets you feel what you see    /    Ind Express   /  18 Oct 2022

Extract :

Researchers from IIT-Madras have developed a new touchscreen technology enabling users to feel the textures of objects on the display. Called ‘iTad’ (interactive Touch Active Display), it can mimic textures such as crisp edges and gritty surfaces.

Current touchscreens can only sense the position of one’s fingers, but offer no feedback.

“When we add feedback, interaction with computers becomes experiential. iTad is unlike anything in the market today because it combines multi-touch sensing with haptics on the same layer,” said a statement from IIT-M.

There are no moving parts in iTad. Instead, an in-built multi-touch sensor detects finger movement and the surface friction is adjusted via software. By controlling electric fields via a physical phenomenon known as ‘electroadhesion,’ the software modulates friction locally as fingers travel across a smooth plane.

The research was led by Prof M Manivannan, department of applied mechanics, IIT-M. Merkel Haptics, a start-up incubated at the IIT-M Research Park, has been working with Touchlab to take the technology forward.

“This is the era of iTad.

The technology can take the online shopping experience to the next level. We can touch and feel things before purchasing them on e-commerce platforms. Around 30% returns in online shopping are due to the mismatch between user experience and expectation,” said Manivannan.

PV Padmapriya, CEO, Merkel Haptics, [ info@merkelhaptics.com  ], said :

“The prototype from Touchlab can be made into a product in a year. Our aim is to make a small device, similar to a computer mouse, on everyone’s desk to add to the experience. We have been field testing and providing valuable feedback to the researchers at IIT-M on improving the functionality of the technology.”

Silos will save the Farmers from Suicide

Context :

Adani Agri Logistics gets contract from FCI to build 4 silos complexes in UP, Bihar   /   14  Oct 2022

Extract :

Adani Agri Logistics Ltd on Friday said it has got contract from state-owned FCI to build four silo complexes in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Adani Agri Logistics Ltd,  has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from FCI, to build silo complexes at various locations across the country.

Adani Agri Logistics will develop and operate state-of-the-art silo complexes at four locations creating a total silo storage capacity of 3.5 lakh tonnes.

The silo complexes will benefit farmers across the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Currently, farmers are forced to deal with a waiting period of two to three days while their agricultural produce makes its way through the traditional farm–to–mandi procurement chain. With the implementation of this project, the processing time will be cut down to merely one to two hours.

This project will benefit general consumers and beneficiaries of the PDS (Public Distribution System), besides generating substantial savings on labour costs, gunny bags and transportation.

The silo complexes will be executed under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) mode.

With the addition of 3.50 lakh tonnes storage capacity, Adani Agri Logistics Ltd will now have a total of 15.25 lakh tonnes.

The company operates 77 freight trains (42 container trains, 25 bulk trains, 7 agri trains and 3 auto trains), 8,00,000 square feet of warehousing space, 5,000-plus containers, 0.9 million tonnes of grain silos and fleet of 285 own trucks.

=======================================================

 MY  TAKE :

Only yesterday , a TV channel showed 40,000 tons of wheat ( procured by FCI ) stored in the open , completely destroyed by rains and rendered unsuitable for human consumption – enough to feed 80 lakh poor people for one month !

For many decades, FCI has neglected to solve this problem by constructing silos, as observed in my following blogs :

Ø  Problem of plenty ?............................... [ 21 May 2012 ]

Extract :

By 1st of June 2012 , stock of food grains with FCI ( Food Corporation of India ) will reach 75.7 million tons

But, no more than 50 million tons can be kept under covered storage !

Rest will be left to rot in the open under the monsoon rains

Even as 1.6 million children ( under 5 ) will die of mal-nutrition in 2012

That is 4,384 children every single day !

A panel headed by Mr. C Rangarajan [ Chief Economic Advisor to Prime Minister ] , recommends following way for disposing the “ Surplus “ stock :

1.  Export

·     2 million tons ….  thru Government Channels

·     1 million tons ….  thru Private Channels

2.  Distribute

·     8 million tons…   to families below poverty line

·     2 million tons…   to families above poverty line

Earlier , a Group of Ministers [ GoM ] headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had shot down the proposal to distribute 10 million tons of surplus food grains to poor people because of “ Fiscal Constraints “ !

For him , saving 1.6 million children at a “ Subsidy Cost “ of Rs 19,500 Crores , works out to a whooping Rs 12,187 per child saved !

Ø  A Drop in the Ocean ?................................ [ 17 July 2013 ]

Extract :

As per Hindustan Times ( 14 July, 2013 ) report, Food Corporation of India [ FCI ] lost rice and wheat worth Rs 2050 Crores in transit and storage , during last 3 years

That was a mere 1.1 Million tons

What is a mere 1.1 million tons , compared to 50 million tons of grains planned to be distributed to 800 million poor Indians , every year , under Food Security Bill ?

( Ans : It is a mere Rs 1,25,000 Crores )

If you go by Mr Tariq Anwar - Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing,  30 % of food grains supplied thru the Public Distribution System ( PDS ) , is lost every year !

How about replacing the Public Distribution System ( thru elimination of all middlemen ) , with a Poor Distribution System , under which , poor can simply queue up before the FCI godowns / silos and collect those grains for FREE , before they rot ?

And here is my recent suggestion re construction of Silos :

Dear Shri Tomarji

nstomaroffice@gmail.com / ns.tomar@sansad.nic.in ],

I am sure those farmer organizations would send their delegates to meet you. When they do, I request you to consider telling them following :

We will urge companies entering into CONTRACT FARMING agreements

with a farmer, to construct on the farm premises of that farmer,

GRAIN STORAGE SILOS / COLD STORAGE ROOMS

to enable a farmer to store his produce for a longer period, without

      perishing under our harsh climate.

We will allow the concerned  Companies to set off expenses incurred in

constructing these facilities towards their CSR obligations.

Alternatively , we will consider use of already announced Agri Fund of Rs

1 LakhxCrore , for this purpose . We have also provided Rs 700 crore for

setting up COLD CHAIN across the country

===================================================

Dear Shri Ashok K K Meena

[ Chairman and Managing Director – FCI  /  chairman.fci@gov.in  ]

Congratulations for this long overdue step to save the grains from rotting

From news report I conclude that each silo would have storage capacity of approx. 80,000 tons and might be costing close to Rs 80 Crore

On the basis of peak stock requirement during normal procurement season, the overall storage capacity required for central pool foodgrains in the country is about 650 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT).

Against this, the total storage capacity available with Food Corporation of India (FCI), Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) and State Agencies (both owned and hired capacity), is

#   851.54 LMT (as on 31.12.2018) comprising 724.79 LMT in covered godowns

     and

#   126.75 LMT in Cover and Plinth (CAP) storage.

As such, there is sufficient capacity for storage of central pool food-grains at the national level.

I have no doubt that , India can “ break into the TOP 50 “ , if businesses do not need to register repeatedly and obtain umpteen REGISTRATION  NUMBERS , listed in my following blog

GSTIN on Sign Boards ? How about other 16 ?

Business Line ( 11 July ) carries following report :

Businesses must display GSTIN on sign boards

Traders and businesses will have to display the GST registration number on their business sign boards and the registration certificate in their premises.

“Every taxable person is required to display his GSTIN number on name board or sign board of business and is also required to display his registration certificate in business premises so that a citizen can easily find out whether a person is registered or not,” a tax official said.

The Goods and Services Taxpayer Identification Number (GSTIN) is a 15-digit number which taxpayers get after registering with the GST network portal.

Just wait till those other concerned “ Government Authorities “ enact laws that require you to display on your business sign board , following numbers as well !

#   Corporate Identity Number...........................................   ( 21 digits )

#   Tax-payer Identification Number for commercial taxes......  ( 11 digits )
