Nitin Gakari : Ambitious / Impatient / Young / Angry ?

Shri Nitin Gadkariji has all of these very desirable qualities – desirable for a Minister

Proof of Ambition :

After being appointed as Transport Minister , he said :

I got an opportunity to work on road transport...this time, I have decided to plant 125 crore trees, as much as the country's population, along the roads in the next five years,” said Nitin Gadkari.

"I am thinking to work on creating roadside amenities in a big way and 2,000 such amenities would be set up.

Work has started on the Mumbai-Delhi Expressway and 12 other expressway projects will be completed in next three months," he said.

=============================

That ambition translates into planting 25 crore trees on roadsides, EACH YEAR !

That means, 25 crores from June 2019 till May 2020

Proof of Achievement ?

None to my knowledge !

All I get to see on TV is, migrant workers walking hundreds of kilometers on roads with hardly a tree to provide cool shade – walking under open Sun, in temperatures of 42* C – sometimes bare feet !

Sometimes, with a 5 year old child in tow !

Of course, no one could blame Shri Gadkariji for NOT having envisaged CORONA crisis in June 2019 when he announced his AMBITION

Dear Shri Gadkariji,

It is never too late to start – especially on a journey to save the environment, by planting trees

Now, it does not help to ( endlessly ) keep analyzing :

“ What went wrong ? Why did we fail to achieve our target of planting 25 cr ( 2500 lakh ) trees in 365 days ? “

It is better to ask :

Ø   What can I do to plant 6.8 lakh trees PER DAY  ( 2500 lakh in 365 days )  ?

Ø  How did Ethiopians succeed in planting 350 million trees in 12 Hours ?

Answer :

As repeatedly urged by our PM Shri Modiji :   Take help of Technology

Here is that technology :

Extract :

But to restore forests that have already been lost, the drones can work more quickly and cheaply than humans planting with shovels.

tech can currently plant 10,000 to 20,000 seed pods a day; as the technology advances, a pair of pilots will be able to plant 100,000 trees in a day (by hand, someone might typically be able to plant around 1,500 trees in a day, Ahlstrom says.)

The company aims to bring the cost down to 50 cents per tree, or around a fourth of the cost of some other tree restoration efforts.

165 trees were planted in three minutes with the use of a single drone.

=========================================================

My take :

Ø  Forget about what Ahlstrom says ( 1500 trees / person / day – manually )

Ø  Let us assume only 10 trees / day / MGNREGA worker – manually )

Ø  Let us assume that we deploy just 1 cr ( out of 11 cr ) MIGRANT workers for such tree-planting along the roads

Ø  That means 10 cr trees / day ( remember, Ethiopia’s 35 cr / day ? )

Ø  So, Shri Gadkariji’s target of 125 cr trees in 5 years, can be achieved in just 12.5 days !

Ø  Each MGNREGA worker gets paid Rs 200 / day

Ø  Hence planting one sapling will cost , Rs 20 / -

Ø  So, 125 cr sapling planting will transfer ( DBT ) , Rs 2,500 cr to migrant workers !
