A 21-year-old woman and her sister were
electrocuted after coming in contact with a high-tension immersion rod used to heat water
at their home here on Wednesday, police said.
The incident occurred in the Rampuri locality
when Nidhi accidentally
came in contact with the immersion rod, and in an attempt to rescue
her, her younger sister Laxmi (19) also suffered an electric shock, a senior
police officer said.
Dear Powers that be :
I suffered an identical “ accident “ , some 50 years ago, while visiting my brother
at Bhavanagar ( Gujarat ).
Arriving after a long journey, I decided to take a bath with hot water
but there was no water heater ( geyser ).
I filled a “ Metal Balti ( bucket ) “ with water and hung an immersion
rod in it and switched on power. After a few minutes, I dipped my hand into the
bucket to check whether water had heated up or not , not realizing to first
switch off the current !
The shock that I got was so bad that I fell onto the bucket which tilted
and water drained out – leaving the live rod hanging in the air . The circuit
was broken and I survived ( to tell this story ? )
All these years, I believed that such “ Open Element
Immersion Rods “ must have been banned.
Muzaffarnagar incidence confirms that these “ Inherently Unsafe “ ( - and “ Designed for Death “
? ) immersion rods are still being manufactured / sold
Dear Minister
for Consumer Affairs :
Please do NOT ask manufacturers to stick onto these rods , a WARNING
LABEL which reads :
“ In case of deaths caused by UNSAFE use
of this rod, manufacturer assumes and accepts no liability. “
