Dhurandhar 2: Misses ₹1,100Cr

Dhurandhar 2: Misses ₹1,100Cr

Lead

On day 28 in theatres, Dhurandhar 2 fell agonizingly short of the symbolic Rs 1,100 crore domestic mark — a whisker that will now frame the film’s longer-term box-office narrative. I watched the Monday numbers come in and felt the same mix of admiration for the run and frustration at how a thin margin can change the headlines.

Day 28 snapshot

  • Day 28 (Monday) collection: Rs 1.8 crore
  • Total domestic gross after Day 28: Rs 1,099.4 crore
  • Day 27 collection (Sunday): Rs 2.2 crore
  • Gap to Rs 1,100 crore: Rs 0.6 crore (Rs 60 lakh)

Those figures tell a compact story: a respectable weekday hold but not strong enough to push the cumulative past the seven-figure crore milestone by the 28th day.

Box-office context and expectations

When Dhurandhar 2 released, box-office trackers and trade chatter expected a steady, long tail driven by metropolitan multiplexes, solid second-weekend holds and strong regional legs. Crossing Rs 1,100 crore by the end of the fourth week was a plausible forecast given earlier weekday discipline and big weekend spikes. The film’s run has been notable — consistent occupancy in urban centres, strong multiplex traction and a remarkable overall franchise momentum — which is why missing the mark by less than a crore is particularly painful in narrative terms.

Why it missed by a whisker: the factors

1) Weekday dip

A Monday dip to Rs 1.8 crore from Sunday’s Rs 2.2 crore represents a ~18% fall. For a film in its fourth week, weekday erosion is normal; nevertheless, the small absolute shortfall on aggregate meant the dip had outsized headline impact.

2) New and sustained competition

Two mid-budget releases and a regional star’s dubbed release clustered around week four, pulling capacity in single screens and some belt-and-road regional circuits. Even modest redistributions of screens can shave crucial lakhs when totals are this tight.

3) Word of mouth plateau

Audience sentiment has been broadly positive, but social traction slowed after week two. Several analysts I spoke with described the buzz as “steady rather than accelerating,” meaning fewer impulsive repeat viewings from casual fans.

4) Regional performance variance

While Hindi heartlands and key metros remained solid, pockets in the South and East underperformed relative to first-week estimates. The film’s content leaned more toward urban sensibilities in its second half, which tempered mass rural leg speed.

Industry reaction (anonymized quotes)

  • “This is a classic case where arithmetic beats emotion — the film performed steadily, but small dips compound at the tail,” said an industry analyst tracking daily distributor shares.

  • “Crossing 1,100 crore was always within reach, but the fourth-week weekday elasticity wasn’t there to make that final push,” observed another trade watcher who follows regional playing patterns.

Overseas performance

Overseas, Dhurandhar 2 has been resilient. Cumulative overseas gross stands near $14 million (roughly Rs 115–120 crore), with decent hold in GCC and Australia/New Zealand circuits and softer exits in certain North American clusters. The international run won’t meaningfully alter the domestic Rs 1,100 crore conversation, but it adds appreciable global revenue to the studio’s ledger and underlines the franchise’s cross-border appeal.

Weekend prospects

The coming weekend is now framed as an opportunity for redemption. Holiday windows in a couple of states, coupled with targeted promotions and expanded show counts in multiplex chains, could drive an incremental Rs 8–12 crore over Friday–Sunday. If that baseline holds and there are no new challengers, Dhurandhar 2 should clear the Rs 1,100 crore threshold early in the weekend run — most likely Saturday. The film’s fate now hinges on two elements: whether casual audiences return in numbers, and how many screens distributors keep allocated when new titles debut.

Final take

As someone who follows box-office rhythms closely, I find this a useful reminder of how milestones are as much mathematical as they are emotional. Crossing Rs 1,100 crore would have been a neat headline; missing it by Rs 60 lakh is a neat footnote. The broader achievement remains intact: Dhurandhar 2 has been a commercial force with durable returns and healthy ancillary prospects. The weekend will tell whether it converts near-miss into milestone.
