The article highlights the proactive steps
taken by popular companies like Zomato, Blinkit, and Uncle Delivery registering
on the e-Shram portal to provide social security benefits to gig workers. The
Ministry of Labour & Employment in New Delhi has allocated a substantial
budget of 32,646 crores for the financial year 2025-26, showing an impressive
80% increase from the previous year. This move is aimed at extending social
security coverage to over 400 million unorganized workers in India, marking a
significant push towards universal social security. The government's focus is
on eliminating fraud and ensuring comprehensive coverage under various schemes
for vulnerable sections of the workforce such as weavers, handloom workers, and
fishermen.
My Take
e-ShramCard
: Will it be an Easy Card?
Reflecting on my blog post about the launch of
the e-Shram card, it's fascinating to see how the initiative has evolved to
include major players like Zomato and Urban Company in its ambit. The concept
of a universal account number on the e-Shram card being acceptable nationwide
now holds even more significance with the growing participation of companies in
ensuring social security for unorganized workers. The alignment of the e-Shram
portal with various schemes and the enhanced coverage under accidental
insurance highlights a step towards streamlining benefits for the workforce,
which was a concern I raised in my earlier post. This collaborative approach
between the government and private sectors resonates with the need for
inclusive and efficient social security mechanisms.
e-Shram:
Also a Deep Database?
In my blog discussing e-Shram as a deep
database, the current development of companies like Blinkit and Uncle Delivery
joining the platform reiterates the significance of having a robust database to
cater to the diverse needs of unorganized workers. The focus on designing
future social benefit schemes and modifying existing ones based on the data
collected echoes the foresight I had regarding the portal's potential as a tool
for targeted schemes. With the rapid increase in registrations on the e-Shram
portal and the detailed approach towards segmenting the workforce, the vision
of tailoring multiple schemes to suit different sub-groups seems to be
materializing. This evolution reaffirms the pivotal role that data-driven decision-making
plays in shaping effective social security policies for the unorganized sector.
Call to Action
To all companies and organizations in the gig
economy, I urge you to follow the lead of Urban Company, Zomato, Blinkit, and
Uncle Delivery in registering on the e-Shram portal for the welfare of gig
workers. By actively participating in social security initiatives, you not only
contribute to the well-being of your workforce but also set a standard for
industry-wide inclusion and support. Let's advance together towards a more
secure and equitable future for all workers.
