And getting  costlier, too  !

DNA ( 08 may 2018 ) carries following news re BEST in Mumbai :

Description: width: 300px; height: 112px; border-width: 1px; border-style: solid; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; float: left;

That means :

Running Cost per bus (  Rs per Km  ):

2007-08  /  2010-11  /  2013-14  /  2016-17
54   /  58   /  86   /  107

Against this, consider the “ PRICE PER KM “ quoted by Goldstone recently for  WET LEASING “ of ELECTRIC buses :

“ Goldstone-BYD placed bids as low as  ₹29.28 per km  for a 9-meter AC bus to Bengaluru, followed by  ₹36 per km  bid for a similar one for Hyderabad

[  source :   Buy or Lease ?

And these prices are for a tender for 230+40  buses only  !

BEST fleet has 3711 buses

If BEST were to get its entire fleet as  WET LEASED   from parties like TATA / Ashok Leyland / Goldstone –BYD etc , then it is entirely possible that the quoted price could come down to as low as Rs 27 per Km  !

A SAVING OF  RS 80 PER KM

Now , a BEST bus is supposed to run , 200 km / day

That is 365*200 = 73000 km per year

For those 3711 BEST buses , that amounts to 73,000*3711 = 27, 09,03,000 km per year

So , if we save Rs 80 per km , how much SAVING can we make per year if all those buses were taken on WET LEASE ?

Rs 2160 crore  !

Apart from that , there will be following advantages :

*   No need for an army of Bus Drivers / Conductors / Maintenance people

*   Huge saving of Petrol / Diesel

*   No exhaust fumes , so cleaner air to breathe and less respiratory diseases

Is this likely to happen anytime soon ?

Are you kidding  !

Powerful vested interests are right now busy thwarting the recent tender for 230+40 buses !

The  Sunshine  Sector ?

Economic Times ( 09 May ) carries following news report :

Highlights :

*  Total number of jobs in renewable energy sector world-wide ( 2017 )………………… 10.34 million

*  No of jobs in this sector in India ( 2017 )…………………………………………………………….    0.721 million

*   Therefore , India’s share of such jobs ( 2017 ) …………………………………………………      7 %

*  No of jobs in this sector in China ( 2017 )…………………………………………………………….    2.2 million

*  So , China’s share of such jobs ( 2017 )……………………………………………………………….    21.2 %

*  No of jobs expected to be created by 2050……………………………………………………….      28 million

*  India’s cumulative Solar installations ( by Dec 2017 )……………………………………….       19.6  GW

*  During 2017, India added Solar power………………………………………………………………        9.6  GW

*  India’s target for Solar power by 2022……………………………………………………………..      100  GW

My Take  :

To reach this target, India will need to install  16 GW in 2018 ( and in each year till 2022 )

To the best of my knowledge , there has been ZERO addition during the first 4 months of this year !

I would not be surprised if , during 2018 , we manage to add another  8 GW  only  !

If you want to know WHY , read :

Now that Trump has pulled USA out of Iran Nuclear Deal , we can expect the oil price to jump to $ 80 per barrel from yesterday’s $ 70 per barrel

The basket of crude oil that India imports averaged,

*   USD 55.74 per barrel in the April-February

*   USD 47.56 a barrel in 2016-17

*   USD 46.17 in 2015-16

Every dollar per barrel change in crude oil prices impacts the import bill by Rs 823 crore (USD 0.13 billion). The same is also the impact when currency exchange rate fluctuates by Re 1 per US dollar.

Read more at:

How come China manages 5 – 10 times what we are managing when it comes to Solar ?

I believe, the most important reason is its “ Political Will “

It is a national shame that the only “ Political Will “ being displayed by our politicians is :

“ How to win election, by hook or crook (or by handing out FREEBIES or even CASH ) ? “

Let us juxtapose some more stats from :

*  During 2017 , China added Solar power of…………………………………………………… 54  GW

*  By Dec 2017 , total installed Solar Power in China……………………………………….. 120  GW

*  In 2017 , no of days that Costa Rica consumed ONLY solar power………………. 300  days

Observations in this article :

Total levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) on a global average for 100% renewable electricity will decline to 52 €/MWh by 2050 (including curtailment, storage and some grid costs), compared to 70 €/MWh in 2015.

Global transition to a 100% renewable electricity system will create 36 million jobs by 2050 in comparison to 19 million jobs in 2015.

On the economic side of the energy transition, sufficient flow of private investment in renewables and storage technologies needs to be ensured for a smooth, fast and cost-effective transition to 100% renewable energy.

Writing  is  on  the  Wall

As per data furnished by Central Ground Water Board, per person availability of groundwater in India has been /  will be ,  as follows (  Litres per Day ) :

*    1951……………… 14,180

*    1991……………..    6,030

*    2001…………….     5,120

*    2025…………..      3,670

*    2050…………….     3,120

What factors are responsible for this situation ?

What need to be done – and SUPER-FAST – to remedy this situation ?

How can we prevent those “ Water Wars “ ( so far , mostly at street level and to a lesser extent , at State levels ),  in the fast approaching summer of 2018 ?

Jobs  Data : How to automate Compilation

Economic Times ( 06 May 2018 ) carries following article :

Summary :

*  CMIE’s ESTIMATE of JOBS

   2016-17…………………….406.7  million
   2017-18…………………… 406     million

*  GHOSH & GHOSH  STUDY

    FY  17……………………….. 45.4 lakh additions to payroll across 190 industries
    FY  18……………………… ..36.8 lakh

*  EPFO  Data

    Dec-Feb ( FY 18 ) ……………. 9.7 lakh
    Apr-Feb……………………………   46.5 lakh additions to payroll

    Sep-Feb  (  FY  18  )…………  31.1 lakh jobs created of which 18-25 age group category
                                             has 22 lakh

This divergence is not surprising !

It is much like having 5 wall clocks in your drawing room, each needing occasional winding

You may rest assured that , quite likely , all will show a different  “ time “ – even if slightly different from the others

And just because you have 5 clocks to depend upon, you become careless in timely winding !  You feel , you can always count on at least one to be working and showing correct time

Except that you don’t know which one !

So , expect this controversy ( as to which Job Data is correct ) to continue , even after 5 years

Now , the Chinese are very obsessed about “ Skilling / Re-Skilling “ their manpower

So , they are unlikely to be satisfied with just data about their “ Unemployment Rate

They would want unassailable data about :

#   Total number of employees ( category / region / industry )

#   Employment Density ( Industry wise / Region wise / Skill wise etc )

#   Net Employment Growth Rate ( weekly - monthly / Industry-wise )

#   Co-relation with no of persons graduating at various levels

#   Data about those Unemployed ( " Graduating " less " Employed " )

#   Overtime Statistics ( Use / Abuse )

#   Work-hour Analysis ( Ave hours / week - month )

#   Wage / Salary Rates ( Yuan per hour ) - Industry wise / Region wise

#   Compliance with labour laws / tax laws / Apprentice Act etc

#   Job Market Forecasts through BIG DATA ANALYTIC ( region / industry )

#   Demographic  Profiles of employees  ( Rural to Urban migration )

#   Per Capita Income Growth for persons  ( MOM / YOY )

#   Changing composition between Blue Collar and White Collar employees

So , expect them to implement , in the next 6 months :

From  BAD  to  MAD  [  01  June  2016   ]

Clean Drinking Water

Around the world , every year , millions of people die a premature death by drinking dirty water , teeming with harmful pollutants / bacteria / germs

This is especially true of our country where , 6.5 lakh villages do not have a supply of filtered piped water to their homes

Millions of people living in these villages depend upon water sources such as open wells / bore wells / ponds / rivers , around which village women wash their dirty cloths / vessels and take baths

Even the dirty water flowing out of huts / homes, gets absorbed into the soil surrounding these water sources and further pollutes them !

All of these water sources are highly polluted and the traditional method of filtering with a thin cloth is just not enough to remove those pollutants

True , some germs / bacteria can be killed by boiling the water and then cooling it before drinking

But , to do that , one needs to burn wood / cow dung cakes , which cause air pollution and deforestation !

And , of course , villagers cannot afford expensive methods such as :

*   Reverse Osmosis

*   Water Heating Stills

*   Desalination Plants

What they need is some  SIMPLE AND CHEAP  method , which does not require ,

*  burning of wood / cow dung cakes

*  supply of electricity

*  frequent replacement of expensive filters

*  difficult maintenance

It is very heartening that a team of scientists have just come up with such a method

By draping black, carbon-dipped paper in a triangular shape and using it to both absorb and vaporize water, they have developed a method for using sunlight to generate clean water with near-perfect efficiency

Read about this at :

I urge Shri Nitin Gadkariji ( Minister for Water Resources ) to contact these scientists at :
