SC Scrapped Bonds

Article Link: India Inc donations via electoral trusts surged after bonds nixed

Extract from the article:

The surge in donations from India Inc. via Electoral Trusts following the Supreme Court's decision to scrap the electoral bonds scheme is a significant development.

According to Prudent's contribution report for the last fiscal year, donations nearly tripled to Rs 1075.7 crore in 2023-24. This increase underscores the impact of policy decisions on corporate funding to political parties and sheds light on the evolving dynamics of political financing in India post-electoral bond era.

My Take:

An Alternative to Electoral Bonds

"Yesterday, Supreme Court declared the Electoral Bond scheme as unconstitutional and violating citizens' Right to Information. Since then, politicians from opposition parties have been supporting the SC verdict and criticizing the NDA government for introducing this scheme.

The amendments allowing unlimited financial contributions under the garb of anonymity were deemed manifestly arbitrary. Transparency in political funding is crucial to preserve voters' rights and combat corruption effectively."

EC Bond Data - Game of Hide and Seek

"With the Supreme Court's ruling on the unconstitutionality of the Electoral Bond scheme, the need for transparency in political funding is evident. The opaque nature of the existing scheme highlights the necessity for a more transparent alternative.

The government must design a new system that ensures public scrutiny and accountability. Prior to the introduction of Electoral Bonds, the funding landscape was problematic.

Moving forward, a system that encourages individual and corporate donors to contribute transparently can uphold the integrity of political financing."

Call to Action:

To the Election Commission and policymakers, it's crucial to consider the implications of donation surges through Electoral Trusts post-electoral bonds.

Strive to create a robust and transparent framework for political funding that upholds democracy's core values. Transparency and accountability should be at the forefront of any new system devised to ensure fair and ethical political nomination dynamics.

Integrated National Employment Policy

Article Link: The Hindu Business Line - CII bats for an integrated national employment policy in upcoming Budget

Extract from the article:

The Hindu Business Line reported that the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is advocating for the implementation of an integrated national employment policy in the forthcoming Budget.

As part of a seven-point agenda, CII has urged the government to establish this comprehensive policy to address the employment scenario in the country.

The call for an integrated policy reflects the need for a holistic approach to tackle the ongoing challenges in job creation and quality employment opportunities.

This proposed policy is anticipated to cover various facets of the economy and social sectors, thereby aiming to boost employment generation across industries.

My Take:

National Jobs Policy: Treasure Hunt

The government's consideration of introducing a national employment policy aligns with the predictions and suggestions I made in my blog post from December 2017.

I had highlighted the significance of such a policy to combat rising unemployment and generate quality jobs across different sectors.

The fact that CII is now pushing for an integrated national employment policy echoes the foresight I presented in my earlier blog.

It's fulfilling to see the evolution of discussions around this critical issue over the years, indicating a step towards addressing the employment challenges effectively.

Employment Policy? Committed to a Committee?

In my blog from October 2021, I referenced the potential establishment of a committee to formulate India's first National Employment Policy.

The recent call by CII for an integrated national employment policy resonates with the ongoing efforts to enhance employment opportunities in the country.

By looking back at my previous insights on the necessity of a comprehensive employment policy, I feel encouraged to see concrete steps being taken towards its realization.

The formation of this policy committee reflects a proactive approach towards addressing the employment dynamics and fostering economic growth.

Call to Action:

To the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and policymakers, I urge a collaborative and inclusive approach towards designing and implementing the integrated national employment policy.

It is essential to involve stakeholders from various sectors to ensure the policy's effectiveness in driving substantial improvements in employment generation and quality jobs.

Let's work together to shape a progressive and inclusive employment landscape for the nation's economic prosperity.

By aligning the goals of the Commerce Ministry with the on-ground insights and connections of Indian missions abroad, the collaborative platform seeks to streamline efforts, enhance coordination, and drive impactful outcomes in the realm of exports and international trade.

My Take:

Dear Ambassadors, Ball is in your Court

"The idea I presented in my blog post about empowering foreign missions to act as strategic salesmen for Indian exports resonates strongly with the current initiative led by the Commerce Ministry.

It's heartening to see the government recognizing the pivotal role that diplomatic missions play in advancing the export agenda.

By assigning individual sub-targets to missions based on market potential, India is strategically leveraging its overseas presence to drive export growth effectively."

Services Export: the Silver Lining

"In light of the significant surge in services exports highlighted in my blog, it's encouraging to witness the government's emphasis on harnessing this sector to address the current account deficit.

As services exports continue to outpace merchandise exports, there is a clear indication of the sector's resilience and contribution to balancing trade dynamics.

This focus on services export growth complements the broader efforts to bolster India's export landscape and underscores the importance of diversification in enhancing trade sustainability."

Call to Action:

To the Commerce Ministry and Indian mission officials, I urge you to deeply collaborate and exchange insights during the upcoming meeting to devise innovative strategies that not only boost exports but also foster sustainable economic growth.
