THE SORRY STATE OF INDIAN EDUCATION?

THE SORRY STATE OF INDIAN EDUCATION?

Not surprising considering the sorry state of our teachers

Mumbai Mirror [10,July2012] reports about a survey conducted by Parents Teachers Association United Forum(PTAUF) in Mumbai, covering

  • 60  Schools

  • 400  Students

  • 150  Parents

  • !50  Teachers

As far as physical punishment is concerned , what do our teachers believe in ? Here is the shocker :

  • Corporal Punishment  …………  100 % of teachers

  • Hitting students with rulers ……  70 %

  • Slapping  ………………………  55 %

  • Hitting with chalk  ……………… 60  %

  • Pulling years …………………    44  %

  • Hitting on back of palm  ……40  %

  • Making students stand on bench……    62  %

  • Making students to do sit-up  …  81  %

  • Giving extra homework  ………  85  %

In this “reign of terror“, it was not surprising that:

  • Students not informing parents of ill-treatment…88 %

  • Parents not complaining (fear of victimization)…88 %

And talking of innovations in the methods of punishment, recently, couple of teachers (West Bengal/UP) punished students by forcing them to drink their own urine !

Apparently, our teachers have their very own unique ways for cultivating/motivating, young and impressionable minds!

Writing on the Wall ?

Mumbai  Samachar ( 16 July 2012 ) provides following figures :

Ø  No of Post Offices in 2006

·        In rural areas………………………….. 1,39,046

·        In urban areas……………………………. 16,258

Ø  No of Post Offices closed down since 2006

·        Rural………………………………………………. 6

·        Urban………………………………………………..732

Obviously , less and less people need a post card / envelope / postage stamp etc. , these days , in order to communicate with friends / relatives / clients / suppliers etc
If , for less than the cost of a post card , people can talk across the country on their mobile phones , then why run to a post office ?
And soon , millions will start sending emails writing on their tablets ( Aakash / Ubislate / Zen / HCL / Karbonn / Micromax / Zync / Funtab etc )
And in 10 years they will be talking to their friends / relatives / sweethearts , on Skype embedded in their bedroom wall !
Indian Government would do well to convert closed down post offices into primary schools

CROREPATIES (BILLIONAIRES) GALORE !

DNA (13 July 2012) provides following interesting figures:

  • Only 1 % of India’s people are Crorepaties

  • But , 48 % of our elected MPs are !

  • State wise distribution of Crorepaties :

·     92 % of those elected from Goa

·     86 % of those elected from Punjab

·     72 % of those elected from Haryana

  • Individual Ranking of Crorepaties :

·     Mahendra Prasad ( JD-U )………………Rs. 692.41  Crores

·     Vijaya Mallya……………………………………Rs. 615.42  Crores

·     Jaya Bachhan…………………………………Rs.  483.86  Crores

  • Party wise distribution of Crorepaties :

·     Bahujan Samaj Party………………………………….. 69 %

·     Nationalist Congress Party………………………….. 68 %

·     Samajwadi Party…………………………………………… 63 %

Our Election Commission has laid down several criteria which “ Disqualify “ a candidate from contesting an election
But our political parties seem to have laid down a single “ Qualifying “ criteria ,for distributing candidature tickets to hopefuls , viz :

“ Thou shall be a Crorepati to begin with ,
It is entirely up to you what you end-up with “

The Hidden Numbers

Times of India ( 13,July 2012 ) provides following figures for our MPs / MLAs , facing criminal cases :

Ø  Total number of MPs / MLAs involved………………………………….. 1,450

Ø  Those facing serious criminal charges……………………………………   641

Ø  Cases involving charges for :

·        Rape…………………………………………….  6

·        Murder………………………………………… 140

·        Attempt to murder……………………. 350+

·        Dacoity………………………………………. 75

·        Kidnapping………………………………….90

·        Theft……………………………………………145

But Times of India does not provide figures of how many are charged with
·        Stealing time of Parliament / Assemblies

·        Holding entire Nation to ransom

·        Blackmailing the country

I presume that will be all of the 4,896 MPs and MLAs !

BUT WILL THERE BE JOBS?

As per an estimate prepared by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development ( OECD ) , the total pool of graduates in the world is expected to expand from 129 million in 2010 to 204 million in 2020 ( graduates between 25 and 34 years of age )

In 2020 , which countries will lead in this expanding army of graduates ?

  •   China  ………………………………..  59.2  Million  (  29  %  )

  •   India  …………………………………  24.5  Million  (  12  %  )

  •   USA   ………………………………..   22.4  Million  (  11  %  )

  •   Russia ……………………………….  14.3  Million   (  7    %  )

  •   UK ……………………………………..  8.2  Million    (   4   %  )

  •   Rest  …………………………………. 75.4  Million   (  37  %  )

Indian scenario (2011), looks as follows :

  • Gross Enrollment Ratio ( 18-23 years old )……………… 16  %

  • Graduate  % age  of population  (  “           ) ………………  8  %

  • Graduates with B.A Degree ………………………………………….33 %

  • No of Universities  ………………………………………………………  523

  • No of Colleges   ……………………………………………………………. 33,000

  • Students graduating / year  ……………………………………….  3.5 Million

  • Engineers graduating  /  year  ……………………………………   1.0  Million

  • Unemployed registered with Employment Exchanges…   41  Million

  • % age of “ Employable “ graduates ( one estimate) ……10 %

But will there be jobs  ?

Our very own Taliban ?

Why worry about foreign-based Taliban ?
We have our very own – in the form of Khap Panchayats ( self-declared village bodies ) to worry about

Proof :

A few days back , Khap Panchayat of Asara village ( Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh ) , issued following “ diktat “ :

Ø  Women below the age of 40 shall not use mobiles

Ø  Women will cover their heads whenever they leave home

Ø  Women shall not opt for a love marriage

But what good is a “ diktat “ without laying down punishment for “ diktat breakers “ ?

Punishment :

Ø  Ex-communication from the village

Apparently , Asara village Khap belongs to  the moderate Taliban
In similar cases of violation of their diktats , other Khaps have supervised the public killing of the lovers !
And these are the Khaps which will not hesitate to build a temple of Durga Mata to “ honor “ the Motherhood !

Ultimate Irony  :

Response of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav ( a Master’s Degree holder in Environment Engineering from Australia ) :  “ If this is what Khap decided , then it must be in the interest of the villagers “
