How does open-sourcing benefit the industry and Meta ?

Nick Clegg answered (nclegg@fb.com ) :

For instance, Indian developers, entrepreneurs, researchers and academics don’t

need to spend billions of dollars , because it is an extremely expensive to build

these large language models which require huge compute capacity.

They can piggy back on our investments and we think that’s a good thing for the

sector as a whole.

It’s also self-interest because of course, the more people innovate using llama,

the more we can reincorporate those innovations into our own products

This is a terrifically exciting moment in technology. All tech companies will become

AI companies

We were meeting with some entrepreneurs in Mumbai yesterday. I said to them,

 You’re all going to be an AI company , because AI is going to be so prevalent. It

 is going to infuse pretty much every interaction that any of us have in the online

 world in the future 

 

We have open-sourced over 1,000s of databases and models

… we will see a huge amount of AI powered innovation from entrepreneurs and

 developers and creators and influencers in India

It will be across areas such as health, education etc

 start up eco system of AI and other emerging technologies.

The objective of this partnership is to make Meta’s open-source AI models

 available for use in the Indian Eco system

During your talk with Satyen Gajwani ( Times Internet ) in Delhi on 07^th June,

someone asked you about the possibility of some Indian Company , committing

itself to develop  / launch its own AGI , on par with ChatGPT

 

You said ( something to that effect ) : Why re-invent the wheel ?  Focus on

developing the spokes

 

Yesterday’s news indicated that some Indian Companies are seriously considering

developing their own AGI

Only time will tell whether this was a right way to commit their resources

But I think Indian Companies should focus on development of the following

 “ spokes “ , for immediate benefit of millions of Indian citizen ( using Training

Data, which are strictly confined to data of Indian Citizen )
