Lawyers blame ChatGPT for tricking them into citing bogus case law      ……………. Hindu  / 09 June 2023

Extract :

Two apologetic lawyers responding to an angry judge blamed ChatGPT Thursday for tricking them into including fictitious legal research in a court filing.

Attorneys Steven A. Schwartz and Peter LoDuca are facing possible punishment over a filing in a lawsuit against an airline that included references to past court cases that Schwartz thought were real, but were actually invented by the artificial intelligence-powered chatbot.

The chatbot, which has fascinated the world with its production of essay-like answers to prompts from users, suggested several cases involving aviation mishaps that Schwartz hadn't been able to find through usual methods used at his law firm.

The problem was, several of those cases weren't real or involved airlines that didn’t exist.

“I did not comprehend that ChatGPT could fabricate cases,” Schwartz said.

“Can we agree that's legal gibberish?” Castel asked.

I would like to sincerely apologise,” Schwartz said.

He added that he had suffered personally and professionally as a result of the blunder and felt “embarrassed, humiliated and extremely remorseful.”

He said the case demonstrated how the lawyers might not have understood how ChatGPT works because it tends to hallucinate, talking about fictional things in a manner that sounds realistic but is not.

“It highlights the dangers of using promising AI technologies without knowing the risks,” Shin said.

My  Take  :

Dear Sam,

During your talk with Satyen Gajwani ( Times Internet ) in Delhi on 07th June, someone asked you about the possibility of some Indian Company , committing itself to develop  / launch its own AGI , on par with ChatGPT

You said ( something to that effect ) : Why re-invent the wheel ? Focus on developing the spokes

Yesterday’s news indicated that some Indian Companies are seriously considering developing their own AGI

Only time will tell whether this was a right way to commit their resources

But I think Indian Companies should focus on development of the following “ spokes “ , for immediate benefit of millions of Indian citizen ( using Training Data, which are strictly confined to data of Indian Citizen )

OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT, hit with proposed class action lawsuit alleging it stole people’s data  /  CNN / 28 June 2023

Extract :

OpenAI, the company behind the viral ChatGPT tool, has been hit with a lawsuit alleging the company stole and misappropriated vast swaths of peoples’ data from the internet to train its AI tools.

The proposed class action lawsuit, filed Wednesday in a California federal court, claims that OpenAI secretly scraped “massive amounts of personal data from the internet,” according to the complaint.

The nearly 160-page complaint alleges that this personal data, including essentially every piece of data exchanged on the internet it could take,” was also seized by the company without notice, consent or “just compensation.”

Moreover, this data scraping occurred at an “unprecedented scale,” the suit claims.

OpenAI did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment Wednesday. Microsoft, a major investor into OpenAI, was also named as a defendant in the suit and did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“By collecting previously obscure personal data of millions and misappropriating it to develop a volatile, untested technology, OpenAI put everyone in a zone of risk that is incalculable – but unacceptable by any measure of responsible data protection and use,” Timothy K. Giordano, a partner at Clarkson, the law firm behind the suit, said in a statement to CNN Wednesday.

The complaint also claims that OpenAI products “use stolen private information, including personally identifiable information, from hundreds of millions of internet users, including children of all ages, without their informed consent or knowledge.”

Uncensored Chatbots Provoke a Fracas Over Free Speech  ( nytimes / 02 July )

Extract :

A new generation of chatbots doesn’t have many of the guardrails put in place by companies like Google and OpenAI, presenting new possibilities — and risks.

A.I. chatbots have lied about notable figures, pushed partisan messagesspewed misinformation or even advised users on how to commit suicide.

To mitigate the tools’ most obvious dangers, companies like Google and OpenAI have carefully added controls that limit what the tools can say.

Now a new wave of chatbots, developed far from the epicenter of the A.I. boom, are coming online without many of those guardrails — setting off a polarizing free-speech debate over whether chatbots should be moderated, and who should decide.

“This is about ownership and control,” Eric Hartford, a developer behind WizardLM - Uncensored, an unmoderated chatbot, wrote in a blog post. “If I ask my model a question, I want an answer, I do not want it arguing with me.”

Several uncensored and loosely moderated chatbots have sprung to life in recent months under names like  GPT4All  and  FreedomGPT.

Many were created for little or no money by independent programmers or teams of volunteers, who successfully replicated the methods first described by A.I. researchers.

Only a few groups made their models from the ground up. Most groups work from existing language models, only adding extra instructions to tweak how the technology responds to prompts.

The uncensored chatbots offer tantalizing new possibilities.

Users can download an unrestricted chatbot on their own computers, using it without the watchful eye of Big Tech.

They could then train it on private messages, personal emails or secret documents without risking a privacy breach.

Volunteer programmers can develop clever new add-ons, moving faster — and perhaps more haphazardly — than larger companies dare.

But the risks appear just as numerous — and some say they present dangers that must be addressed. Misinformation watchdogs, already wary of how mainstream chatbots can spew falsehoods, have raised alarms about how unmoderated chatbots will supercharge the threat. These models could produce descriptions of child pornography, hateful screeds or false content, experts warned.

Google has been testing its medical AI chatbot, Med-PaLM 2, in hospitals, including the Mayo Clinic research hospital.

According to a report by WSJ, the AI chatbot was being tested since April. Med-PaLM 2 is an AI tool designed to provide answers to medical questions

It is an updated version of PaLM 2, which was announced at Google I/O in May.

The chatbot is trained on a curated set of medical expert demonstrations to improve its healthcare conversation capabilities.

The report cites an internal mail saying Google's Med-PaLM 2 can be particularly helpful in countries with limited access to doctors.

However, there are some accuracy issues with the chatbot, as highlighted in a research paper published by Google in May.

Physicians found more inaccuracies and irrelevant information in the answers provided by Med-PaLM 2 compared to those provided by other doctors.
