#WiFi #LiFi #Broadband #Internet

A  Welcome  Initiative

Business Line ( 06 April ) carries following news :

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has mooted a concept of open architecture-based public Wi-Fi grid to bring down the cost of internet by 90 per cent.

By doing so, it will allow small entrepreneurs such as tea stalls, grocery shops and vendors to set up and maintain access points. Device manufacturers, payment companies, ISPs / telcos and consumer internet companies can provide the remaining pieces to set up public data offices (PDOs), it said on Thursday.

“Broadband proliferation across the country is an important pillar of ‘Digital India’. Wi-Fi is the cheapest option, given low-cost of equipment and free spectrum,” RS Sharma, Chairman, TRAI, said.

The regulator’s concept involves PDOs — much like PCOs of yester-years that galvanised connectivity. The PDOs will be companies, or even small merchants, interested in providing Wi-Fi hotspots to public either free or on payment model, it said.

Sharma presented a report on ‘public Wi-Fi open pilot project’ to Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha, outlining the success of the first phase of trials it had conducted.

According to the report, the products available for consumption should begin from ‘sachet sized’, that is, low denomination, as low as 2.

It said users should be able to easily discover the network, do one-click authentication and payment and connect their devices in Wi-Fi hotspots. “ The experience for small entrepreneurs to purchase, self-register, set up a PDO must be simple, low touch and maintenance free,” it said.

TRAI had earlier come out with recommendations on proliferation of broadband through public Wi-Fi networks that were sent to DoT on March 9.

The regulator has now suggested moving ahead from the pilot to the next phase, which will involve working with the participants of the pilot in Delhi and Bengaluru, and creation of a testing and certification framework.

India cannot progress without ensuring that all of its 1.3 billion citizen are internet connected

And since following agencies / firms are working towards this , it may happen sooner than later :

*   Government’s own fibre optic project to connect 2.2 lakh Gram Panchayat

*   All mobile service providers rushing in to launch 5 G network ( especially , JIO )

*   Google experimenting with launch of Loons ( internet balloons ) /

*   Microsoft trying to launch its “ White Space “ technology in India

=============================

But there is no doubt , all of these ( except the Indian Government ) , are commercial establishments and would want to recover their costs / investments , in some manner from those “ tea stalls, grocery shops and vendors  “

It is also possible that , in order to gain a competitive advantage over the neighbouring shops , some of these PDOs may offer their “ internet connectivity “ free to their customers

But what we need is :

FREE internet connectivity to every Indian , everywhere , all the time

Here is my suggestion to achieve that :

*  Very soon , whole of India will switch over to LED lamps ( street lamps – homes –
    shops – offices – factories etc )

*  Within next few months , electric power will reach all the villages under “ Saubhagya “

*  Broadband over Power Lines  has established that internet can be delivered over
    simple electrical distribution network ( - that means , to every place in India )

    I believe, this technology is already working in USA – Canada – Europe etc

*  Li-Fi technology can deliver internet to all internet-connected devices , which are
    receiving light from an LED lamp , placed above

Li-Fi provides better bandwidth, efficiency, connectivity and security than Wi-Fi and has already achieved high speeds larger than 1 Gbps under the laboratory conditions. By leveraging the low-cost nature of LEDs and lighting units, there are lots of opportunities to exploit this medium. Li-Fi is the transfer of data through light by taking fibre out of fibre optics and sending data through LED light bulb

*  If that electric power comes from a roof-top mounted Solar Panel , even that power is
   free of cost

But the “ Holy Grail “ of “ Free Internet “could well be following , which made news some years back :

Every smart phone turning into a “ Signal Repeater Tower “ , enabling voice / data to jump from one ( nearby ) mobile to another ( next ) mobile , whichever is “ inactive “ at the moment

And keep jumping till the signal reaches its destination !

I urge Shri Ravi Shankar Prasadji to ask  Prof  Ashok Jhunjhunwala  to examine / evaluate my suggestion , along with the proposal prepared by Shri Sharma

Sun  Shines  on  Saudi

Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest producer / exporter of oil

Oil under Saudi soil was produced by sun’s energy , millions of years ago

That very same “ Sun Energy “ is about to transform the energy landscape of Saudi in the next 12 years , as reported below :

Saudi Arabia  just announced a solar power project , having following parameters :

*   Location……………………………………………………………… Rub’al Khali desert

*   Size  /  Project  Cost  …………………………………………200 GW / $ 200 Billion

*   Target Completion……………………………………………… 2030

*   Saving in Saudi Arabia’s Power Bill…………………….$  40  Billion / year

     This means Saudi project will recover its investment in just 5 years

*   Expected increase in GDP………………………………….  $  12  Billion

*   Expected  Tariff  from Solar Project………………….  2 cents per kwh ( Rs 1.3 )

    Current Tariff in Saudi is………………………………….    4 cents per kwh  ( Rs 2.6 )

*   Likely creation of new jobs…………………………………  100,000

*   Solar  Panels  Area……………………………………………….5,000  Sq Km

Could India do better  ?

Yes  -  if  Shri Piyush Goyalji  and  Shri R K Singhji , make up their minds  !

How ?

Area of India’s Deserts …………………278,500  Sq Km

Even if we cover just  10 % of our deserts  with Solar Panels , we could generate ,
1,160  GW  !

And quite likely, as expected in Saudi project , our Solar tariff could also drop by 50 % , from current recent tendered quotes of  Rs 2.44 / unit  to  Rs 1.2 / unit  !

Through that expected drop in tariff ( from 4 cents to 2 cents ) , Saudi expect their GDP to go up by $ 12 Billion

By how much can India’s GDP go up if our tariff was to drop from Rs 2.44 to Rs 1.22  ?

Whether our Policy Makers want to examine my suggestions or not , the worst thing that can happen is to impose that “ proposed “ Safeguard Duty of 70 % on imported Solar Panels

If we want to overtake the Saudi , we should reduce it to “ Zero “ per cent !

#Plastic #Ban #Pollution

#Plastic  :  Refusing  to  fade  away

A few weeks back , Maharashtra Government banned all sorts of plastic packaging materials

This was ( as expected ) followed by protests , not only from users but also from manufacturers / dealers etc

Then the plastic manufacturers challenged the ban in High Court ( hearing was to start on 4th April )

Not surprising since , in Maharashtra , there are :

*    950  bottle units

*   455 plastic bag / container units

*   4000 – 5000 other units engaged in processing of plastic packaging

Between them , these units employ some 4 – 5 lakh persons , whose jobs are threatened and have annual turnover of around , Rs 4,000 crore

Since announcement of the ban , hardly a day passes without the government coming out with some fresh announcement / clarification / notification / amendment / withdrawal / suspension etc

No one seems to have a grip on the situation !

=================================

REASON  ?

It is simple .  Apparently . no one in Maha Govt  had worked out a clear cut – and long term – plan called :

STEP by STEP , DISMANTLING  of the PLASTIC  INDUSTRY over 20 YEARS “,

Which sharply laid out ,

“ WHO will STOP doing WHAT , and WHEN “

And published it , way back , in 2000

==============================

Today’s chaos / heartburn / anger / frustration ( among users and manufacturers ) is entirely due to this , “ Pathetic Lack of Long Range Planning

And , believe me , 20 years from now , history will repeat , when Health Minister in the Central Government suddenly wakes up and tells his Ministry Secretary :

“ Cigarettes and tobacco are causing 12 million pre-mature deaths in India ( - current figure is 6 million )

Release a “ fatwah “ , banning all tobacco products , within next 6 months “

If we want to avoid repetition of history , I urge today’s Health Minister to read :

Going Upin Smoke ?  [  18  Aug  2013   ]

If he does , he will have also figured out what alternate jobs to provide for :

*  380 lakh workers engaged by tobacco industry

*  25 lakh pan-beedi shop walas

#FakeNews ? You decide !

I could have also called it :  a study  in  contrast

Proved by following two news reports :

DNA  / 01  April  2018

Highlights :

Data from the state economic survey, presented in the upper and lower houses of the state during the budget session, shows that the state's housing authority, Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), has built a mere 4.68 lakh affordable homes since it was established in 1977.

 MHADA, which was established with the aim to construct affordable homes in the state, in its 40 years, has constructed and redeveloped 4,68,940 dwelling units between 1977 and 2017.

Nyoooz.com / 06 April 2018

Highlights :

Last week the state govt got a nod from the Central govt for construction of 10,600 more homes under the ambitious PMAY , bringing the total number of homes approved in the state , close to 2.2 lakh

However this figure is no match to the more than 22 Lakh applications that the state government has received under the PMAY scheme

The State government aims to construct 19.5 lakh homes under the PMAY scheme till 2022

In Junior School , we learned in arithmetic , the Rule of Three

If that rule were to be applied , it would say :

“ If building 4 lakh homes takes 40 years , then building 19.5  lakh homes would take how many years ? “

Ans :  195  YEARS

Would you say , a fit case to be categorized as #FakeNews  ?
