I recently saw news about Maharashtra’s plan to establish a counselling system for students, spurred by a Supreme Court order. This development resonates deeply with my long-held perspectives on the evolution of information and the true purpose of guidance. For years, I've pondered how we move beyond simply searching for data to proactively solving problems and offering advice.
It brings a sense of validation to recall my earlier thoughts, dating back to 2010, where I predicted that in the not-too-distant future, people wouldn't just search for "INFORMATION" on platforms like Google, Yahoo, or MSN. Instead, they would present their problems to a handheld device and receive instant solutions, answers, or advice. Future of Search Engines. The core idea I want to convey is this — take a moment to notice that I had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. I had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and I had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context.
The idea of a counselling system is not merely about providing access to data; it's about providing guidance. This is where the evolution of search and information processing becomes paramount. My discussions with colleagues over the years have often circled back to this very challenge.
Take, for instance, my discussions with Shalaka, where we explored the efficiency of search parameters and the potential of "long tail" keywords for indexing vast amounts of information Long Tail Jobs. This foundational work in efficiently categorizing and retrieving information is crucial for any effective guidance system. We aimed to make information easily discoverable, which is a prerequisite for offering targeted advice.
Similarly, my conversation with Deepa focused on transforming scanned images of health records into searchable word documents using OCR This Might Interest You. This highlights the importance of making all forms of information accessible and searchable by keywords, moving beyond mere visual representation to semantic understanding – a critical step in building comprehensive profiles for counselling.
More recently, the conversations with Suman, Sharon (https://www.linkedin.com/in/zhousharon), and Sandeep about generating questions from my own documents on Personal.ai Generating QUESTIONS from my Documents are highly pertinent. The ability to automatically generate insightful questions from vast amounts of text is akin to an AI-powered counsellor understanding the nuances of a student's situation and guiding them to self-reflection or specific resources. As Sanjvani and I also discussed, the challenge isn't just generating questions, but leveraging them to engage users and bring them closer to solutions.
And let's not forget Kishan, with whom I've been exploring ways to enable AI models like Gemini to access and read my blogs, not just for data, but to imbibe my "way of thinking – style of writing / composing / expressing" Next Step In Evolution of My Virtual Avatar. This is a monumental step towards creating an AI capable of offering truly personalized and empathetic guidance, mirroring a human counsellor's ability to understand context and temperament. Kishan's work on 'reverse engineering blogging' further pushes the boundary by analyzing content for topics I've covered extensively, moderately, or never, allowing for proactive content generation or identification of knowledge gaps Reverse Engineering of Blogging.
The Maharashtra initiative is a commendable step. It acknowledges that students need more than just raw information; they need interpretation, empathy, and direction. By leveraging advancements in AI, semantic search, and intelligent question generation — many of which I’ve advocated for over the years, as seen in my "Quantum Jump ?" blog on Google's "Talk to Books" semantic search — we can build truly transformative counselling systems. These systems can analyze a student's history, aspirations, and challenges, and then, much like a seasoned human advisor, offer tailored pathways and solutions.
This isn't merely about technology; it's about applying our collective intelligence to nurture the next generation, helping them navigate a complex world with wisdom and clarity.

Hemen Parekh
