The digital landscape is constantly evolving, and with it, the conversation around data privacy grows more critical. The recent discussions surrounding India's Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act have certainly brought this to the forefront, leading to a significant surge in demand for consent and data governance platforms, as highlighted in a recent Communications Today article DPDP rollout fuels spike in demand for consent and data governance platforms.
It appears that businesses, particularly marketers, are now truly waking up to the gravity of data compliance. Another piece from Exchange4Media emphasizes this, calling India’s new data law “a wake-up call” and warning marketers to ignore DPDP at their own peril India’s new data law is a wake-up call for marketers: Ignore DPDP and pay the price. Furthermore, the government's resolve to enforce these regulations is clear, evident in its finalization of an affidavit in the Apple case concerning global turnover penalties Government finalises affidavit in Apple case, set to respond to global turnover penalty challenge.
For me, this shift feels like a validation of concerns I voiced years ago. Back in August 2017, I penned a blog post titled Future is Nearer ! where I reflected on emerging technologies like the “Ghost Telephonist” attack and Google’s DeepMind AI developing imaginative capabilities. My conclusion then was stark: "But future of privacy does not look rosy!" The core idea I wanted to convey is this — take a moment to notice that I had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. I had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and I had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context.
My concerns were not just about malicious attacks, but also about the sheer volume and varied nature of data interaction. In a more recent blog from September 2023, ToneTag Makes Your Car Talk, I discussed the rise of voice-based interactions and the Internet of Things, referencing innovators like Kumar Abhishek, who founded ToneTag, a company specializing in sound-based payment information transmission. You can learn more about Kumar Abhishek at his LinkedIn profile. While I don't have his email, his work exemplifies how technology is increasingly embedding data interaction into everyday life. These advancements, while convenient, inherently involve a constant flow of personal data, making the need for robust data governance frameworks even more pronounced. The ubiquity of data collection points, from smart vehicles to everyday appliances, amplifies the challenge of maintaining privacy.
Today, as we witness the rollout of DPDP and the scramble for compliance, it’s clear that my early warnings about the fragility of privacy in an increasingly connected world were not misplaced. The future of privacy may still not be entirely rosy, but at least now, we have a stronger legal framework to navigate its complexities and protect individual rights.
