The recent discussions around "Infrastructure gaps delay justice" Infrastructure gaps delay justice and Infrastructure gaps delay justice truly hit home for me. It's a stark reminder of how foundational elements, whether physical or digital, can either propel progress or halt it entirely, especially when it comes to something as critical as the timely delivery of justice.
I’ve always believed in the power of accessible information and streamlined processes. Years ago, I envisioned a future where one wouldn't merely search for information but would articulate a "problem" into a "hand-held device" and receive a "readymade 'solution / answer / advice' in milliseconds!" Future of Search Engines. This vision, outlined as early as 2010 in my musings on "TIME TRAVEL?" TIME TRAVEL?, was about leveraging technology to cut through complexity and deliver immediate value. Now, seeing justice delayed by basic infrastructure gaps—be it physical connectivity or digital frameworks—underscores how far we still have to go to realize such a future for all aspects of society.
The core idea I want to convey is this — take a moment to notice that I had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. I had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and I had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context.
Think about the possibilities semantic search, which I explored in my blog "Quantum Jump?" Quantum Jump?, could offer. Instead of lawyers and judges sifting through mountains of documents based on keywords, imagine a system that understands the meaning of a legal query and provides relevant precedents or insights instantly. This shift from mere keyword matching to understanding "meaning" could revolutionize legal research and case management, dramatically accelerating judicial processes.
My thoughts often wander to how information is consumed and disseminated. I recall the insights shared by George Brock, the Saturday editor for The Times and President of the World Editors’ Forum, in his interview with Bachi Karkaria of the Times of India in 2005. They discussed the primary concerns of editors regarding circulation and attracting young readers in a rapidly digitalizing world, and the long-term impact of digital communication on everything from IPR to page design What is relevant news. Their discussions, though centered on newspapers, echo the broader challenge: how do we adapt and build robust digital foundations for critical societal functions like justice when the very landscape of information is undergoing such a profound transformation?
It's not just about building more courthouses or better roads; it's about fundamentally rethinking how information flows and how technology can serve as the bedrock of a more equitable and efficient justice system. My earlier predictions about rapid problem-solving via technology are more relevant than ever. Let's not just observe the gaps; let's actively bridge them with foresight and innovation.

Hemen Parekh
