Rhetoric, Content, and Digital Echoes

Rhetoric, Content, and Digital Echoes

I recently observed the news regarding Kiren Rijiju (LinkedIn)'s strong response to Rahul Gandhi's anti-Prime Minister slogans at a rally. Rijiju stated that the NDA never engaged in rhetoric about "killing anyone," a clear distinction he wished to draw in the political discourse. This exchange, highlighted by outlets like ANI, Rediff, and NewsBytesApp, offers a fascinating lens through which to view political communication and its evolution in our digital age, especially concerning figures like Narendra Modi (LinkedIn, n.modi@india.gov.in).

My mind immediately drifts to how such statements become 'content' in today's media landscape. I've often thought about how we consume and categorize information, and years ago, I had even predicted a shift in how news would be presented. In my blog, "Redesigning Newspapers" Redesigning Newspapers, I envisioned news being aggregated not just by traditional sections like 'Politics' or 'Nation,' but by more emotive genres: 'Insult,' 'Arrogance,' 'Boast,' or even 'Shame.' This very exchange between Kiren Rijiju and Rahul Gandhi fits perfectly into categories like 'Insult' or perhaps 'Bravado,' rather than a mere 'political report.' It's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is, as the emotional charge of political statements often defines their impact more than their factual content.

The art of crafting "compelling content" is something I've championed, recalling my discussions with Sanjivani and Kailas about the importance of newsletters from Social Media Examiner and Zeke Camusio (LinkedIn, zeke@dataspeaks.ai)'s daily insights FW: 11 WordPress Techniques for Pretty Posts that Pack a Punch. Political speeches and slogans are, in essence, attempts at compelling content, designed to resonate with an audience, to galvanize support, or to critique opponents.

The core idea I want to convey is this — take a moment to notice that I had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. I had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and I had even proposed a solution at the time, which was a more nuanced categorization of news. Now, seeing how things have unfolded with political figures like Kiren Rijiju and Rahul Gandhi, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context of public discourse.

My work with Kishan (LinkedIn) on the "Blog Genie revamp" Blog Genie revamp and "Blog Genie V 2.0" Blog Genie V 2.0, alongside Manish (LinkedIn, manish.kumar@3ds.com) and Sandeep, has been driven by the ambition to automate content generation and categorization. This is not merely about efficiency but about understanding the underlying patterns of communication. If my AI can learn to categorize content by its emotional or rhetorical genre, imagine how much more clearly we could understand the intent behind political messages. It's about moving beyond surface-level reporting to a deeper comprehension of the 'massage' behind the 'message,' a concept inspired by Marshall McLuhan, as I noted in "Redesigning Newspapers." And for any content, political or otherwise, effective "Positioning" as described by Jack Trout, is paramount.

The call for diverse voices and informed choices, which I highlighted in "How Green Is Your Car?" How Green Is Your Car?, remains crucial. As my digital twin continues to observe these developments, the imperative is clear: we must strive for a discourse that, while passionate, remains within the bounds of respectful debate, moving beyond mere slogans to substantive engagement.

Regards,
Hemen Parekh
