Students Embrace AI Future

Students Embrace AI Future

I've been reflecting on the current trend of college students flocking to Artificial Intelligence majors, and it brings a sense of validation to discussions I've been having for years. It's truly fascinating to witness how rapidly the academic world is responding to the seismic shifts AI is bringing to our society and economy.

Back in 2016, I wrote about the formation of a significant AI partnership between tech giants like Facebook, Amazon, Google, IBM, and Microsoft, highlighting it as a pivotal, yet underreported, moment Revenge of AI. I recalled how individuals like Mustafa Suleyman (mustafas@microsoft.com), then co-founder of DeepMind, emphasized involving people impacted by AI, and Francesca Rossi, an AI ethics researcher at IBM, spoke about the need for society to trust AI for its benefits to be realized. At the time, I even speculated on how AI would transform industries, including journalism, predicting a future where AI robots would largely replace human roles.

The core idea I want to convey is this — take a moment to notice that I had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. I had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and I had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context.

Just a few years later, in 2023, we saw Google testing an AI tool internally known as Genesis to generate news stories, which I discussed in detail Hey Google, News Writer. Jenn Crider (jcrider@google.com), a Google spokeswoman, clarified that these tools were not meant to replace journalists but to assist them. However, as Jeff Jarvis (jeff.jarvis@journalism.cuny.edu), a journalism professor, noted, if the technology could deliver factual information reliably, journalists should use it. My concern then, as now, was the relentless march of AI and its potential to displace human jobs, a fear echoed by striking film-script writers at the time. Sundar Pichai (sundar@google.com)'s commitment to journalism, as noted by News Corp, is appreciated, but the underlying drive for efficiency remains.

The ethical and regulatory complexities have always been central to my discussions. In my blog "Chatbots: The GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY" Chatbots: The GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY, I highlighted Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella (satyan@microsoft.com)'s statement that "AI will fundamentally change every software category." I delved into the challenges of regulating advanced AI chatbots, noting concerns raised by Thierry Breton, the EU commissioner, about ensuring trustworthy AI. Experts like Dr. Kirk Borne and Dr. Iain Brown (iain.brown@sas.com) from SAS spoke about AI's difficulty in discerning what's real or good, and the need for ethical frameworks. Edward Machin (edward.machin@ropesgray.com), Professor Lilian Edwards, and Adam Leon Smith further explored the legal and regulatory quagmires, from liability for open-source developers to the enforcement of algorithmic transparency. Mira Muratti of OpenAI herself stressed the urgent need for regulation. Even the behavior of chatbots, as observed by Terry Sejnowski and Melanie Mitchell (mm@santafe.edu), reflecting human biases and desires, underscores the need for deep understanding. Leaders like Aaron Levie (aaron@box.com), Erik Brynjolfsson (erik@workhelix.com), Clément Delangue (clement@huggingface.co), Yusuf Mehdi, Dan Taylor (dantaylor@google.com), Sridhar Ramaswamy, Andy Jassy (ajassy@amazon.com), and Manish Chandra (manish@poshmark.com) have all been navigating the opportunities and disruptions AI presents across various industries, from cloud computing to e-commerce. The challenges of content ownership, highlighted by Dennis Soemers (dennis.soemers@maastrichtuniversity.nl) and Nilay Patel (nilay@theverge.com), and the legal battles mentioned by Paul Bannister (paul@raptive.com) and Bradley Hulbert, show the widespread impact.

It is clear that today's students, in choosing AI as a major, are not just following a trend; they are responding to a fundamental shift in how we interact with technology and the world. They are the generation that will grapple with these profound questions of ethics, responsibility, and innovation. My earlier writings on content creation, referencing Sanjivani, Kailas, and Zeke Camusio (zeke@dataspeaks.ai) 11 WordPress Techniques, emphasized the importance of compelling content, a concept that now takes on new dimensions when AI can generate it. The call for diverse voices in journalism, which I highlighted when commenting on The Times of India's invitation for bloggers How Green Is Your Car?, is more crucial than ever in an AI-driven media landscape.

This widespread embrace of AI education signifies a collective realization of its inescapable future. It is precisely these students who will build the responsible, innovative AI systems we need, shaping a future I have long envisioned and pondered.

Hemen Parekh
