Air Purifier Towers in Mumbai

In the last few days, following news appeared in News papers :

Ø  Set up air purifier towers, CM tells Chahal  ( 03 Feb / HT )

Extract :

The country’s first smog tower was inaugurated in Connaught Place, New Delhi, in August 2021, followed by a second one in Anand Vihar, in September of the same year.

At the time the devices were touted as a solution for the Capital’s mounting problem of air pollution. Delhi’s environment minister Gopal Rai even said that the devices, priced at 20 crore each, can “filter out 80 per cent of particulate matter”, much to the amusement of scientists.

The devices stand at an imposing height of 20 metres, and are fitted with 5,000 high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, which clean 1,000 cubic metres of air per second, using 40 large fans to help pass air through the device.

Recent reports however have suggested that they have been inefficient at reducing ambient air pollution, just as experts had red-flagged multiple times prior to their inauguration.

Alastair Lewis, Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry at the University of York, and Science Director at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, has argued that they simply cannot process large volumes of air, in enough time, to make any dent to the problem.

Sunil Dahiya, an analyst with the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, said,

These devices have not, and cannot work. Besides, as they are being powered by coal-fired electricity, they are in fact adding to pollution in some other part of the country.”

The civic body has also said that it will install 14 air-purifier towers in Mumbai (Two towers each in the seven municipal zones of city). It is pertinent to note that similar smog towers have been installed by the authorities in several north Indian cities, Delhi, Gurugram, Lucknow and Chandigarh to curb air-pollution level. However municipal commissioner and state appointed administrator, Iqbal Singh Chahal said that the towers in Mumbai doesn’t resemble those of any other city.

Each tower will be 30-feet long and will have a capacity to purify the air within a one-kilometer radius. The approximate cost of each tower will be around Rs 3.5 crore. The towers will operate through radio waves and electromagnetic action

“These towers will be equipped to cut down the suspended pollutant materials in air by 45%. We are not following examples of other cities and have carried our own feasibility study through independent experts before taking the call for setting up these towers,” said Chahal on Saturday.

My  Take :

I wish Shri Chahal had an opportunity to read my following emails before

committing Rs 50 Cr ( for 14 towers ) :

Dear Mr Parekh,

Thanks for sharing.

These smog towers are not something which can’t be designed and built in India but it’s important to note that in absence of control on sources, these will have limited success

We had already designed a few years back but we realised that ambient air volume correction using this option may not be lasting solutions. The system devised not only particulate but also gaseous emissions.

Much before china smog tower was discussed, we had made a system which will address traffic junction as we are dealing with smaller volume.

Major sources control work always

DigiLocker 2.0 = I am One, I will become Many

Context :

DigiLocker 2.0: Load more documents in Digital India's flagship app   /  ET  / 05 Feb 2023

Extract :

DigiLocker has been the flagship app of the Government of India’s digital initiatives, Digital India. In her budget speech on Wednesday, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed to extend its scope, allowing more documents to be made available in the digital wallet to help more fintech services access and leverage the platform.

For starters, it makes the whole KYC process simpler and works as a one-stop solution for updating identity.

The app will use Aadhaar as the foundational identity and PAN as a common identifier for all digital systems of government agencies.

The new version will support enterprise-level DigiLockers for MSMEs ( micro small and medium businesses), trusts and other entities. The idea for this enterprise-level facility is to expand the scope of DigiLocker, which in turn could help fintech innovation services.

Companies will be able to alter important documents and the changes will be reflected in all the documents linked to the DigiLocker.

The platform already supports 600 types of documents and is used by more than 146 million users, as per data revealed by the government.

The service accepts documents from more than 2,300 issuers and contains over 5.6 billion issued documents. This is already quite a vast expanse that the app covers. But there’s more in store.

For individuals, additional documents will be part of DigiLocker.

However, the government hasn’t made clear which documents will be a part of the expansion. But some recent updates do hint at what could be coming.

For instance, the Karnataka Police lately started accepting digital versions of applicants’ proof documents using the DigiLocker service for its recruiting process.

This makes it easier to obtain legitimate documents directly from the source and eliminates the need for manual verification

The recently launched DigiYatra app also works in integration with the DigiLocker app.

MY  TAKE  :

I am One , I will become Many ………………[  06 Jan 2020 ]

Where I proposed :

Ø  How about a card to replace all the above-mentioned cards ?

Ø  Time has come to dispense with all physical cards and merge all of those into, one VIRTUAL CARD

Ø  How can the Central Government go about replacing ALL physical cards

with just one VIRTUAL card ?

Ø  The method of “ merging “ of all identifiers  [ cards ] , must NOT require a

citizen to fill up any FORM , online or offline

Following is my suggestion :

         #  Central Govt to launch a online portal called, www.SUIIC.gov.in  (  Single

Unified Identity for Indian   Citizen )

             #   By appropriately enacted Law, Central Govt will order all CARD ISSUING

AGENCIES to upload their “ Card Related Databases “ onto SUIIC web

server and continue to do so DAILY for new additions to their databases

                #   SUIIC will use AI - Machine Learning- Big Data Analytics etc., to

merge / collate all kinds of structured  / unstructured databases

pertaining to all  kinds of Cards / unique IDENTIFIERS, issued by any

                     entity, to  any citizen

These will include Mobile Service Providers and E Mail ID providers

               #    This exercise will lead to creation of UNIQUE PROFILE for each citizen,

                     and  named :

YUP  ( Your Unique Profile )

YUP  ( with unique serial number ) will be that SINGLE CARD which

                      replaces all CARDS

               #   YUP will also be the name of a Mobile App supported by SUIIC web

                    server

               #   Any citizen can download the YUP ( absolutely VOLUNTARY ), open it

on his  smart phone , enter his mobile number / E Mail ID and take

a SELFIE of  his own FACE

              #   The Mobile App will automatically and instantly, upload the FACE

IMAGE onto SUIIC database and the matching YUP of that person

              #    SUIIC will embed into the FACE PHOTO, all data of all the CARDS ever

issued to that person ( using STEGANOGRAPHY ), and send it back to

                    the owner’s mobile phone

               #   Just under the FACE PHOTO, there will be a DROP LIST of all the

Cards  / Identifiers which have been embedded. Touching any item, will

reveal the actual Physical Card embedded. Touching any item, will

                   reveal the actual Physical Card

             #   This will enable that citizen to EDIT his personal data online and click

                   SUBMIT

            #  Anytime required in future, that citizen can show that YUP photo to any

                party

      #   There will be no compulsion for any citizen to use YUP . He may continue

using his Physical Cards, if he so  desires

           ==================================================

This is a very broad “ CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK “ – and certainly not

comprehensive by any standard

Eg :

Going beyond merging / aggregating / unifyingall existing physical

cards belonging to a person, what about :

 #   Enabling him to use YUP to create ( for the first time ), an altogether different

      card ?

       #   Enabling a person to create a new Voter Card, upon attaining the age of 18 ?
