Parekh’s Law of #Privacy ?

Q  :    Is privacy  desirable  ?

A  :    Most certainly – to the extent possible

Q  :    Is privacy sustainable  ?

A   :   Doubtful

============================

Here is why :

The Smart Jewelry Bracelet, which is currently a prototype, uses machine learning and a multitude of sensors to analyse a user’s movements in order to detect an assault as it is taking place.

Scientists have developed a smart bracelet that can automatically detect physical or sexual assault, scare off the attacker and call for help.

Upon detection that the user is in danger, it is programmed to emit a loud beeping sound and red strobe lights begin to flash in an effort to scare the attacker off and to alert other people who may be nearby.

The bracelet contains a small microcontroller equipped with a gyroscope, accelerometer, temperature and pressure sensors, GPS, and microphones.

“The sensors allow the bracelet to collect user activity and vital signs continuously,” said Jayun Patel, a graduate research assistant at UAB.

Dolby Laboratories chief scientist Poppy Crum tells of a fast-coming time when,

technology will see right through people ,

no matter how hard they try to hide their feelings.

Sensors combined with artificial intelligence can reveal , whether someone is,

*    lying

*    infatuated, or

*    poised for violence,

Crum detailed at a big ideas TED Conference.

“It is the end of the poker face,” Crum said.

We broadcast our emotions.

WE WILL KNOW MORE ABOUT EACH OTHER THAN WE EVER HAVE.”

According to the neuroscientist,

*   Eye dilation reveals how hard a brain is working,

*   Heat radiating from the skin signals whether we are stressed or even romantically
     piqued.

Carbon dioxide exhaled can signal how riled up someone, or a crowd, is getting

Micro-expressions and chemicals in breath reveal feelings.

Timing of someone’s speech can expose whether they are at risk of dementia,
diabetes, multiple sclerosis, or bipolar disorder, according to the neuroscientist.

Brain waves can indicate whether someone’s attention is elsewhere in a room,
regardless of the fact their gaze is locked on the person in front of them.

Technology exists to read such cues and, combined with artificial intelligence that can analyze patterns and factor in context, can magnify empathy if used for good or lead to abuses if used to oppress or manipulate, said Crum.

“It is really scary on one level, but on another level it is really powerful,” Crum said.
“We can bridge the emotional divide.”

Now the proposed law :

“  CONCERN FOR PRIVACY INCREASES IN DIRECT PROPORTION TO THE AMOUNT OF PERSONAL INFORMATION / DATA , WHICH A PERSON WANTS TO HIDE FROM THE PUBLIC “

During my walk this morning , I met an illiterate / poor plumber from Bihar who moved to Mumbai 4 months ago and is working on a construction site

For nearly 30 minutes , he was having a video-chat on his smart phone , with his small daughter in his village

I asked him if he was worried that the mobile service provider had captured and stored his entire conversation on its computers

He answered : Humko koi farak nahi padtaa  !  Hume kya chhipaana  hai  ?

[  Makes no difference to me . What have I to hide ?  ]

I am glad , being close to 85 years of age , I am unlikely to be around in 2025 , when each and every piece of furniture / device / gadget / artefact in my home, will transmit 24 hours , what I speak and do , to some computers all over the world !

#JointPolls ? #FixedTerm ?

Answer is  :  YES  PLEASE  !

Following news appeared in Times of India ( 15 April ) :

This formality has to be gone through

Actually , it is Election Commission which is advocating holding of simultaneous polls and have made its position clear on this, both to the Central Government and to the Supreme Court

It has also said that it does not foresee  any major administrative hitch in this

I presume , some technological innovation will be required . But these are solvable

The biggest hurdle is getting a consensus of all the major political parties , to whom  I have sent ample justifications through my following e mail [ REaL ]

And while trying to get that consensus for  #JointPolls  , it would be highly desirable to obtain their consensus on NITI Aayog’s proposal for #FixedTerms , also :

Reforming Elections and Lok Sabha [ REaL ] ( 20  Dec 2016 )

https://myblogepage.blogspot.com/2016/12/reforming-elections-and-lok-sabha-real.html

In this, I have also described a fool-proof method of getting from all those opposition parties , that elusive CONSENSUS  !

#EESL #ElectricCar #ScamInIndia

Do  they  have  an  option ?

Economic Times ( 13 April  ) carries following news report :

From this report , here is how I summarized this offer :

Nodal Agency………………………………………………….. ….EESL

Customers………………………………………………………….  Govt Depts / PSUs / Agencies

No of E Cars ( to replace petrol cars )…………….   500 ,000

Who will buy / own the cars ?..........................EESL

Who could be suppliers of e-cars ?...............  TATA / M&M / Nissan-Japan / BYD – China

Estimated Purchase Price / car …………………….   Rs 11.8 lakh

Arrangement between EESL and Govt Depts…  Lease

Period of Lease………………………………………………..  6 years

ROLE OF EESL

*  Float tender and buy / own, cars from e-car manufacturers

*  Hire drivers from private agencies

*  Provide 12 hr Customer Service / Emergency / Road Assistance

*  Repair and Maintenance of leased cars ( presumably , through Insurance Cover )

*  Help Depts in setting up Charging Stations

ROLE  OF  LEASING  GOVT  DEPTS

*  Buy land for Charging Stations / for parking space

*  Own charging stations and hire attendant staff

*  Pay for damages to cars for non-covered items of repair under insurance

TERMS  OF  LEASING

*  26 days per month and 8 hours per day

*  Nominal Km coverage …………………….. 80 km per day ( so , 2080 km in 26 days )

*  Charges beyond nominal usage :

    #  Rs 260 per hour exceeding 8 hour daily nominal usage

    #  Rs  3 per km beyond nominal 80 km per day

*  Lease rent …………………………Rs  40,000 per month ( Rs 20,000 if driver not supplied )

*  Charging cost to be borne by the leasing department

MY  COMMENTS

*  Finally some clarity is emerging

*  If each car runs its full permitted ( nominal ) usage of 80 km per day , that would be
    2080 km in 26 days

*  That would work out to Rs 19.2 per km ( Rs 40,000 divided by 2080 km )

*  If, in one extra hour ( beyond nominal 8 hours ) , that car covers , ( say ) 20 km ,
then the extra cost works out to :

      #   Rs 3 / km * 20 km = Rs 60

      #   Plus , Rs 260 / hour ( for one hour )

A total of Rs 320 for going 20 km in that extra hour

That works out to Rs 16 / km ( Rs 320 divided by 20 km ) – a little less than Rs 19.2 / km of nominal lease rent

*  How does this compare with what OLA – UBER charge per km ( without having to
worry about putting up Charging Stations / charging cost ) ?  Just  Rs 10 -15 per km !

Why not give this option to the the govt departments ?

*  Why is EESL shying away from floating a tender for “ Leasing “ instead of “ Buying “ ?

*  I feel , if EESL were to float a “ Car Lease Tender “ , TATA / M&M etc would quote a
lease rent of Rs 12 / km ( with driver )

( because they continue as “ Owners “ and can claim depreciation on car assets ,
while filing their tax return  )

And without driver , they would quote  Rs 6 / km !

( Remember , EESL lease rent
to govt department, without driver , is half : Rs 20,000 pm instead of Rs 40,000 pm )

*  In turn , EESL would be able to sub-lease at Rs 10 per km ( with driver )  !

*  Not only EESL ( owned by Central Government and funded by tax-payer money )
would save THOUSANDS  of  CRORES of rupees, in initial investment , but the
government will save THOUSANDS of CRORES of rupees in monthly REVENUE
EXPENSES , if EESL were to float a “ Car Lease Tender “ !

It is still not too late for NITI Aayog to raise this question with EESL , before RaGa raises it in the Lok Sabha !

#Aadhar #Privacy #DataProtectionLaw #Surveillance

An   Open  Letter

Dear Hon CJI , Shri Dipak Misraji :

Petitioners say :  Aadhar must be scrapped because it invades personal privacy

Government says :  Privacy is not a fundamental right guaranteed by our Constitution

I say  :  Aadhar is a must for eliminating corruption /  Privacy is an obsolete concept

I have already sent to you , may be a dozen emails justifying my logic ( Privacy is dead )

Before announcing your judgement, you may want to go through the following developments :

Cortica, an Israeli company with deep roots in security and AI research, recently formed a partnership in India with Best Group to analyse the terabytes of data streaming from CCTV cameras in public areas.

One of the goals is to improve safety in public places, such as city streets, bus stops, and train stations.

It’s already common for law enforcement in cities like London and New York to employ facial recognition and license plate matching as part of their video camera surveillance.

But Cortica’s AI promises to take it much further by looking for “behavioral anomalies” that signal someone is about to commit a violent crime.

MUMBAI, India and TEL AVIV, IsraelJan. 29, 2018 /PRNewswire/ --

Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, and Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India came together today to welcome a "new age of collaboration" between the two countries pledging to share technologies and resources for the betterment of each.

The first collaborative effort, hailed as a significant step in cementing the unprecedented cooperation, was announced between Israeli AI leader, Cortica (www.cortica.com) and India's Best Group, a diversified group operating in several sectors (www.bestgroup.co.in).

And last – but not the least :

Dear Hon Shri Misraji ,

Let me assume that you are using a,

*    Smart phone made by SAMSUNG

     ( a South Korean manufacturer  )

*    Its Operating System is ANDROID

( owned by American Google )

*    Its service provider is Vodafone

(  a UK based Mobile Sevice Provider )

All of these entities have a complete AUDIO LOG of each and every word that you ever uttered , using your smart phone !  Ever since you started using it !

And complete log of every web site you ever visited from that phone

And entire data of your online purchases , made through any mobile app

This holds good of everyone using a smart phone – including government officials in charge of our national security !

Although a bit late , George Orwell’s “  1984 “ has finally arrived  !
