Missing the Jungle for the Tree ?

That is what seems to be happening if you find time to read the following articles / news reports which have appeared in media over the past 2 days , in respect of the Twitter episode :

And what are these reports / articles talking about ?

Listen :

·         ….whether Dorsey’s presence at the committee’s meeting would have achieved anything other than political theatre. Standing Committees in India  are not empowered to take testimonies under oath , nor do they have quasi-regulatory powers

·         “ The parliamentary committee technically may have the right to  summon Twitter officials, but I don’t understand the rationale and utility of this action “ ( Kapil Sibal )

·         Parliamentary Standing Committee on IT wants to examine the issue of “ safeguarding citizens’ rights on social media / online news platforms

·         The Government will not intervene in the matter until the panel reaches a decision

·         Their primary mandate is to make recommendations to Parliament

·         Legal experts termed the whole exercise as pointless… “ You can’t blame Twitter for not taking this seriously….

 What is the  TREE  ?

·         Fake news - handles – identities /  Trolling  /  Abusive posts  /  Inaccurate news  /  Hate speech  /  Political propaganda

What is the MISSING  Jungle  ?

·         Social Media sites and Apps ( not to speak of all kinds of E Com sites ) fooling users into submitting all kinds of totally unnecessary , Personal / Private data

·         Then following the users on the internet to surreptitiously compile all kinds of data re their online life ( - again without the knowledge of the users )

·         And then , without the knowledge or the permission of the users, selling such data to any buyer, for billions of dollars ( - and not sharing anything with the Data Owners )

What are the implications  ?

·         1 % of the rich people control 56 % of world’s wealth ( in India too, this ratio holds )

For reducing this inequity, no satisfactory “ Wealth transfer mechanism “ is found

·         These rich own most of the TOP companies of the world , none of which produce a tangible / physical products . They are all, DIGITAL ECONOMY companies

·         This ever growing “ Economic Inequity “ is producing social tensions / militancy / refugees / economic migration / persecution / terrorism , around the world and pausing a threat to world peace . Global warming is interlinked with this inequity

Is there a Comprehensive Narration of this ?

·         Sure . Read :    Data and its discontents    (  Author : Prabir Purkayastha  )

How can we force these Digital Satraps to share their wealth with the users ?

By

#   resorting to “ tit-for-tat / paying them back in their own coins “

#   using the same technology that they have used on us so far to enrich themselves

Will Twitter ( - and its cousins ) agree ?

·         They will, if their only other option is to “ Quit India “. Read them following Riot Act

          #  Lawmakers back bill to isolate Russian internet

          #  After a single day, Facebook is pushed out of China again

         #  20 Countries who may implement SARAL

Who are likely to oppose SARAL  ?

·         Without doubt , there must be many , including ( possibly )

          #   The Centre for Internet and Society

          #   Cellular Operators Association of India

Selling what Personal / Private data will Indian internet users make money thru SARAL ?

On behalf of 500 million Indian internet users , SARAL will sell ( anonymized / aggregated ) data at the following DATA LEVELS, and instantaneously transfer money to users ( DBT )

#    Data   Level   1  ………………  Personal Data

#     Data   Level   2  ………………  Family  Data

#     Data   Level   3   ………………  Contact Info

#     Data   Level   4  ………………   Social Media Data ( websites-portals-apps etc )

#     Data   Level   5  ……………….  Cultural Exposure Data

#     Data   Level   6  ……………….  Education  qualifications Data

#     Data   Level   7  ……………….  Languages Knowledge  Data

#     Data   Level   8  ……………….  Job  Experience  Data

#     Data   Level   9  ………………   Wealth – Income Data [ from Tax Returns ]

#     Data   Level  10  ………………. Medical History Data

Any suggestion to Shri Anurag Thakur , Chairman , Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology ?

·         May be your committee does not have power to “ take testimonies under oath “

·         But your right to ,

#  safeguard the interests of 500 million users

#  reach a decision in their favour

#  recommend implementation of SARAL to Shri Ravi Shankar Prasadji

-      is absolute
