At recently concluded 107th Indian Science
Congress, Shri Narendra Modi challenged the scientists to develop new battery
types , saying :
“ We
need to pay attention to grid management as
we expand our renewable energy
supply.
These require
developing new battery types which are ,
Ø
based on environmentally benign
materials,
Ø
not monopolistic,
Ø
affordable on 100s
of Giga-Watt scale,
Ø
suitable for tropical
climates ”

Scientists from Monash University ( Australia )
, seem to have come up with just such a battery !
Here is that report :
Extract :
Ø Now, researchers have developed a lithium-sulfur battery that could power a smartphone for five days
straight or can also enable an electric vehicle to drive for over 1000km.
Ø The lithium-sulfur battery developed by researchers from Monash University has an ultra-high capacity with better performance and less environmental impact than the commercially-used lithium-ion batteries
Ø The new battery design has
# Higher capacity,
# Better
performance,
# Lower
manufacturing costs,
# Abundant material supply,
# Fluent
manufacturing process, and
# Reduced environmental footprint
Ø Outperforming the batteries in the market by over four
times, it is the world's most efficient lithium-sulphur (Li-S) battery design making it
promising for large-scale
real-world applications.
Ø Professor Majumder from Monash University explained,
“Successful fabrication and implementation of Li-S batteries in cars
and grids will capture a more significant part of the estimated $213 billion
value chain of Australian lithium, and will revolutionise the Australian
vehicle market and provide all Australians with a cleaner and more reliable
energy market.”

Dear
Dr S Jaishankarji,
[ External
Affairs Minister / eam@mea.gov.in ]
In my following email a few days back, some of
the problem-areas I listed were :
]
Ø Charging of Batteries of Electric Vehicles
takes hours !
Ø No way to store ( for use at night ),
billions of KWH of Solar Power
Ø Dependence on import for Li-ion batteries
/ Fast charging button batteries
I urge the NEST division [ NEST
= New emerging and strategic technologies ] , recently set up in your Ministry , to get in touch
with,
Shri
Narendrabhai Modi would welcome such an initiative on part of NEST
