Ø In a significant move, the Centre has
notified new rules under the Aadhaar Act, expanding the scope of Aadhaar linkage to more social welfare schemes.
Ø The 12-digit unique identity number can now
be “voluntarily”
linked to the forthcoming health identity card-for-all project as well as
existing government services such as getting a driving licence.
Ø A senior government official, elaborating
the logic behind the move, told ET that there was a “real need” to expand
Aadhaar’s “scope”, which was regulated till now.
Ø The “central government may
allow Aadhaar authentication by requesting entities in the interest of good governance, preventing leakage of
public funds, promoting ease of living of residents and enabling better access
to services for them…,” the notification said.
Ø However, the authentication rules shall be “voluntary”, signifying
beneficiaries can choose not to disclose their Aadhaar details.
