Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

ISRO : inspiring – but not Motivating ?

5 years back, ISRO gave a demo of a Maruti van whose rooftop was fitted with Solar Panels which powered a small ( but adequate ) Lithium-ion battery

I was excited and sent following email to our Cabinet Ministers :

Solar Panels charging Li-ion Batteries of Electric Cars ? ………………[ 04 May 2017 }

Extract :

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recently demonstrated an environment-friendly solar hybrid electric car, designed and developed using in-house resources, at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvanathanapuram.

The announcement about the car was made this week. The demonstration included a successful uphill drive.

Isro is now researching ways to cut down the car's cost.

THE CAR IS RUN USING HIGH-ENERGY LITHIUM ION BATTERIES, WHICH CAN BE RECHARGED USING SUNLIGHT, SAID SOURCES.

And with Roof top mounted Solar panels , continuously charging the battery , we would need a small battery ( 5 Kwh ? ) whose cost may come down from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 1 lakh , drastically bringing down the ex-showroom selling price

If battery price comes down from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 1 lakh , then replacement cost would come down from  Rs 18 / km to  Rs 4 / km ( far less than petrol cost of Rs 7 / km ! ) .

Who would want a petrol car ?

Fast Forward to TO-DAY :

Ø  No further news about ISRO’s solar rooftop powered car

But following announcement :

A new solar panel? The Lightyear 0 has been revealed /  Interesting Engineering  / 10 June 2022

Extract :

Lightyear 0’s 60 kWh battery pack delivers 288 miles (625 km) of range on a single charge. Combined with solar power, the Lightyear One can offer drivers up to 432 miles (695 km).

This solar technology can provide an additional 44 miles (70 km) of range per day and up to 6,835 miles (11,000 km) per year.

Using the Sun as a power source, Lightyear 0’s optimized  solar roof  and holistic design enable the vehicle to drive for weeks, even months, without charging.

In cloudy climates, based on the average commute of around 21 miles (35 km) per day, the five square meters of double-curved solar panels on Lightyear 0 can charge the vehicle for up to two months of usage before charging again.

In sunnier countries, the company claims that the time frame could be up to seven months

Dear Shri Nitin Gadkariji,

We neither need TESLA nor Lightyear ( both extremely expensive , with Lightyear selling for over Rs 200 lakh and TESLA selling for over Rs 47 lakh – in their countries )– with no more than a few HUNDRED buyers for such expensive cars in our market of 30 LAKH cars / year

If given a challenge – and government support - , our own EV manufacturers can :

#  Incorporate ISRO technology ( of Solar Rooftop )

#  To power a 25 Kwh Zinc-ion battery ( under trial at IIT-Madras )

#  Bring down the EV sale price under Rs 5 lakh ( provided you convince GST

Council to reduce GST on locally designed / developed / manufactured Zinc-Ion

    battery , to 0 %
