Energy Efficient Appliances

 Dear Shri Vishal Kapoorji ,

CEO – EESL / CESL ( ceo@eesl.co.in / mdcesl@eesl.co.in )

Congratulations for your planned e-Market place for ( to begin with ) 20 basic energy efficient appliances

But , what is considered an “ Energy Efficient Appliance “ ?

I presume , it would have to be an appliance for which ( as per my earlier emails ), BEE has fixed “ Maximum Hourly Electric Consumption “ .

To make it ( as you are quoted above ) , a “ mass movement “ and “socialise energy efficient appliances in a big way “ , government must “ Incentivize “ :

Ø  Domestic power consumers by enabling them to earn CARBON CREDITS , using a Smart Meter

Ø  Smart Meter manufacturers through a PLI ( Production Linked Incentive ) Scheme

Ø  DISCOMS by subsidizing the installation of Smart Meters by replacing current meters

Ø  SAMSUNG to transfer to CESL , its “ SmartThings Energy Integration “ technology

For specifics of my proposal , I urge you to look up my earlier emails listed at the bottom of this note

With Regards ,

BARD evaluated my suggestion as follows :

Yes, there are strong arguments for saying that SAMSUNG's SmartThings Energy, when integrated with appliances and a smart meter, could incentivize homeowners to switch to energy-efficient appliances. Here's why:

Benefits for homeowners:

·         Real-time insights

SmartThings Energy provides detailed information on the energy consumption of individual appliances. This transparency empowers homeowners to identify inefficiencies and understand where they can potentially save energy and money.

·         AI-powered optimization

With AI Energy Mode, SmartThings Energy can automatically adjust settings on certain Samsung appliances to optimize their energy usage while maintaining performance. This can lead to immediate cost savings without requiring manual effort.

·         Carbon credit potential

If carbon credit programs are integrated with SmartThings Energy, homeowners could potentially earn credits for reducing their energy consumption with efficient appliances. This adds a financial incentive and reinforces the environmental benefits of their choices.

·         Convenience and control

SmartThings Energy allows homeowners to remotely monitor and manage their appliances through a smartphone app. This offers flexibility and control over their energy usage, making it easier to adopt energy-saving habits.

Integration with appliances and smart meters:

Seamless data access

By connecting directly to compatible appliances and the smart meter, SmartThings Energy collects accurate data on energy consumption. This eliminates the need for manual tracking or estimations, providing reliable information for decision-making.

·         Targeted interventions

With appliance-specific insights, homeowners can identify and prioritize upgrades for the appliances that have the biggest impact on their energy bills. This allows for a more cost-effective and targeted approach to appliance replacement.

·         Potential for automation

In the future, SmartThings Energy may be able to automatically switch appliances to lower-power modes or even disconnect them during peak demand periods based on smart meter data. This could further incentivize energy conservation and potentially lead to lower electricity costs.

However, there are also some limitations to consider:

·         Compatibility

SmartThings Energy currently only works with Samsung appliances and specific smart meter models. This limits its reach and may require additional investments for homeowners who use different brands.

·         Data privacy concerns

Sharing energy consumption data through SmartThings Energy raises concerns about privacy. Homeowners need to be assured that their data is secure and used transparently.

·         Carbon credit program availability

The ability to earn carbon credits through SmartThings Energy depends on the existence and integration of such programs in specific regions. This is not yet a universal feature.

Overall, SAMSUNG's SmartThings Energy, when combined with appliance integration and smart meter data, offers a promising solution for incentivizing homeowners to switch to energy-efficient appliances. However, its effectiveness will depend on addressing compatibility limitations, ensuring data privacy, and integrating with existing or future carbon credit programs.

We’re very excited about the e-marketplace for energy-efficient appliances: EESL chief  .. 19 Jan 2024

2023 was a year of consolidation for Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), says its CEO Vishal Kapoor. Kapoor, also heads Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL).

He is happy that energy efficiency has got the “landscape” and the “salience” that it deserves.

In an interview with business line, Kapoor, who will be completing a year in office this month, shared his vision for the industry and the roadmap for the company as it steps into the new year. Edited excerpts.

How is this e-marketplace for energy-efficient appliances coming along?

That is another big thing that we are doing. And it emanates out of basic data. The world over, almost around 45 per cent of energy is consumed by 20 basic appliances.

Contrast this with the whole transport sector...it is only 21 per cent.

So you know how much value or latent potential lies in this retail space. If you break this 45 per cent, you will find that 15 per cent of this is basically on the commercial side and almost an equal amount in the domestic space.

We realised that until or unless we reach the retail side, make it a mass movement and socialise energy

efficient appliances in a big way, we will fall short of our attempts.

Another big point is that this is the best bang for the buck today in terms of achieving the highest energy efficiency per unit of investment. So if we see this matrix, I think there are two sectors.

One is domestic and the other one is industrial. That is why we thought of coming out with an energy

efficient appliances marketplace, which will operate both in B2C and B2B formats. And this marketplace is currently undergoing rigorous testing and probably within the next one month, it will be there in the public domain.

In the first phase, it will allow retail customers to procure energy efficient appliances.

And in the second phase, on the B2B side... in any, case we already do this through an offline mechanism. But we are very excited about this marketplace coming through. And the value of this marketplace is that it will be a one-stop platform for anything that is energy efficient. We’ll start with appliances and then move slowly ahead and bring in some small projects that can be commoditised to a great extent.

We have signed an MoU with Credai, for energy efficiency products. And we have our Strategy 2030 document in place now

Smart Meters: Power Ministry to offer additional financial support to progressive Discoms    …. BL  / 19 Jan 2024

Extract :

The Union Power Ministry has said that it will offer additional financial support to Discoms that are doing commendable work in reducing losses and installing smart meters.

During the ongoing two-day review, planning and monitoring (RPM) meeting of the power sector, which commenced on January 18, the centre and states held deliberations on the status of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

The two-day RPM meeting will deliberate on distribution, rooftop solar, green hydrogen, green appliances, PM KUSUM, Rights of Consumer Rules, viability of Discoms, progress of RDSS, state-wise stability of power supply and state-wise detail of steps taken to meet the demand and resource adequacy, among others.

Addressing the meeting, Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal emphasised that some Discoms have not made much progress in taking up loss reduction works as well as smart metering works under RDSS, Power Ministry said.
