National Task Force for Doctors

Context :

RG Kar Rape and Murder: Supreme Court sets up National Task Force for measures to protect safety, dignity of doctors

Highlight :

The Court ordered the task force to prepare a national action plan with regard to preventing gender based violence and to ensure safety and dignified working conditions for interns and resident and non resident doctors

 My Take :

Yesterday , Supreme Court ordered that , instead of being guarded by the Kolkata Police , RG Kar hospital shall be guarded by the CISF personnel , round the clock

I suppose, in 3 shifts of 8 hours each, 10 CISF guys would need to be on duty , in each shift , taking the total to 30 persons

Now , for past few days , the striking doctors and interns , have been demanding that all the hospitals in India, must have police protection, round the clock

If this demand was to be acceded , how many CISF persons might be needed ?

Following data will give you a clue :

1. Full-Time Doctors:

  • Estimated Number: Approximately 1.2 million
  • This includes doctors working in both public and private hospitals. The ratio of doctors to the population in India is around 1:1,500, which is below the WHO recommended ratio of 1:1,000.

2. Medical Interns:

  • Estimated Number: Approximately 100,000
  • This number includes medical students who are in their final year of study and are completing their internships across various hospitals in India.

3. Technical Staff:

  • Estimated Number: Approximately 2.5 million
  • Technical staff includes nurses, lab technicians, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals. Nurses form a significant portion of this category, with over 2 million registered nurses in India.

4. Non-Technical Staff:

  • Estimated Number: Approximately 3 million
  • Non-technical staff includes administrative staff, housekeeping, security personnel, and other support staff that contribute to the functioning of hospitals.

You can see it is easier said than done !

May be , CISF would need to hire 300,000 security persons !

May be this could be one more area where AGNIVEER may be granted 100 % reservation !

Hospitals must bear the cost of such protection

At this point, it may be worth asking, if there are any other professionals, who too might require such protection

In recent past, we have heard of molestation of girl students and lady teachers, in many of our schools. In India, we have close to 15 lakh schools, employing over 96 lakh teachers. I urge the Supreme Court to enlarge the mandate of the National Task Force to cover our schools as well
