The  Next  Big  Thing

Following is an extract of an article by Shri Nandan Nilekani , in Hindustan Times ( 14 Nov )

“ FasTags could be the next big thing “

In this article , Shri Nilekani has made following suggestions to “ solve the many of the vehicular problems we’re facing now

==============================

FIRST

FasTags can implement congestion pricing . The pricing itself can be dynamic to affect demand

==============================

SECOND

The same FasTags can enable the government to have lower congestion pricing for those who are pooling to work

==============================

THIRD

These tags can regulate parking, while simultaneously creating a revenue opportunity for cities .

FasTags can ensure that a no-parking sign is not just a warning, but a serious penalty for those looking to park illegally

Individuals and businesses can ‘ switch on ‘ temporary parking spaces during peak hours

=================================

FOURTH

The FasTag readers can also be used to implement many of the policy recommendations of the NGT

PUC ( Pollution Under Control ),can be linked to the FasTag accounts and a tag without a valid PUC can be fined automatically when it crosses  a reader

=================================

FIFTH

Government lacks granular traffic data needed to make better decisions

With a trusted implementation of FasTag readers, the government can get such anonymized data directly from the ground .

Basically an invisible toll booth that doesn’t collect a toll , but captures every time any car crosses it . This data can be immensely powerful when used correctly

In the past , I have sent to the Transport Minister / NITI Aayog / Municipal Corporations etc . similar  suggestions , through E Mails ( listed below ).

Even if they did not find time to read my emails ( - forget about an acknowledgement ! ) , I do hope that they will , at least , listen to Shri Nilekani  !

#ISRO #MSME #ElectricVehicle

Carbon  Conspiracy  ?

Some 50 years back , it used to take 25 years for an industry to get obsolete

10 years back , this period came down to 5 years

At the rate at which technology is advancing today , it seems an industry can become obsolete , even before it is born !

Here is proof :

·         India has decided to completely change-over to Electric Vehicles ( EV ) by 2030

·         Today , we have over 200 million petrol / diesel vehicles

·         Some 10 million more are getting added each year

·         That means , possibly some 300 million will get replaced by 2030 ( as EV )

·         Those 300 million EV will need , at least , 18 lakh  “ EV Battery Charging Stations “ to come up , all over the country ( - a “ Re-born Industry “  ? )

Today , we have , a total of 60,000 fuel retail pumps in India

On average , these take about 10 minutes to fill up a vehicle tank , but a EV battery charging station would take 300 minutes ( 5 hours ) to charge a Li-ion battery ( ie : 30 times longer ! )

So , even if the vehicles are willing to queue up for 5 hours , that would require 30 times more EV charging stations ! 18 lakhs  !

Estimated current investment in this industry = Rs 6.5 lakh*crore

Now , if we need 30 times more EV charging stations ( as compared to present ), that would also mean that the investment required too , would go up 30 times !

That is Rs 195 lakh*crore  !

·         But , even before the first hundred Battery Charging Stations have come up , technology is getting ready to “ Obsolete “ the very concept of a battery-charging station !

·         In May this year , ISRO demonstrated a modified OMNI van with a Solar Panel mounted roof-top , which would continuously charge a ( relatively ) much smaller Lithium Ion battery , as long as that vehicle is exposed to the Sunlight !

·         At night , this EV can be charged at home ( thru domestic electric outlet )

If all of those 300 million EV were to implement ISRO technology , there would be NO NEED for those 18 lakh Battery Charging Stations !

A still-born industry ?  You bet !

But a infrastructure saving of Rs 195 lakh*crore  ! !

But then how come ,

·         despite such a  REVOLUTIONARY  BREAKTHROUGH , there is no further mention in media of what progress has ISRO made to commercialize this technology during the last 6 months ?

·         there is no response to my emails from ISRO / Minister for Transport / Society for Indian Automotive Manufacturers ( SIAM ) / leading car manufacturers …etc  ?

·         there is no mention of this INNOVATION on ISRO’s own web site ?

I wonder , if there is some DILEMMA which is holding back the release of the “ EV CHANGE-OVER ROAD-MAP “ , jointly prepared by the Transport Ministry and NITI Aayog – and which the Car Industry is awaiting with bated breath ?

Are following vested interests wanting to “ kill “ ISRO technology , in order to survive ?

·         existing Petrol / Diesel Pumps ( 95 % owned by HP / IOC etc )

·         importers of Li-ion Batteries ( large ones – which will not be required ) ?

·         companies who have drawn up investment plans for the manufacture of those large Li-ion Batteries ?

·         existing Car Manufacturers who have configured their EV offerings around those large batteries ?

Those of you who wish to learn ( although, just a little ) about the ISRO technology, may want to look up :

Whatever the underlying reasons for this “ Deafening Silence “ , it is not late for ISRO to come forward to share its “ Design / Drawings / Documents “ with millions of MSME by enabling them to freely download the same from :

Drugged  with  Doze of  Denial  ?

Some 1000 million adult citizens on both the sides of LoC ( Line of Control , in Kashmir ) , seem to have been drugged with a big doze of denial

They have been mesmerized into believing that , one day whole of Kashmir will belong to their country

But Farooq Abdullah is able to see the “ Stark Reality

A report in DNA ( 12 Nov ) quotes him as follows :

=====================================================

I always made it clear, not only to Indians but to the entire World , that the part which is with Pakistan now belongs to them

This part of Kashmir belongs to India

It will never change, no matter how many wars you wage

Azadi is not the issue . There is China on one side and India and Pakistan on the other

All of them have atom bombs and we have nothing except Allah

Those who talk of azadi are wrong “

To understand,

·         Why the international powers do NOT want India and Pakistan to finalize LoC as the International border

·         Why power-hungry politicians on both the sides want to keep the Kashmir pot boiling for ever ,

The  Prophet  of  Probability

About Ray Kurzweil ( Director of Engineering – Google ) , it is said that 86 % of his predictions about the shape of things in future, has come true in 15 / 20 years

Nearer home , one can say that 90 % of the predictions about the shape of Indian Economy, made by Shri Amitabh Kant ( CEO – NITI Aayog ) , will come true

Except that in Dr Kant’s case , this could well happen in 5 / 10 years !

Example :

Today’s DNA , reports following :

“ Debit, Credit cards and ATMs will be redundant in 4 years

Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant on Saturday said debit and credit cards as well as ATMs will be redundant in next three-four years and people will use their mobile phones for financial transactions.

"India will make credit cards, debit cards and ATMs technologically redundant in next 3-4 years and we all will be using mobiles for doing many transactions," Kant said at Amity University Noida campus where he was felicitated with an honorary doctorate degree.

================================

Allow me to add to this what Times of India writes today :

“ Banking for Everybody , without banks : BLOCKCHAIN “

HOW

Anyone with an internet connection and a mobile phone can send, save and borrow money peer-to-peer . Low income people could open small businesses and send money easily and cheaply

WHY  THIS  HELPS

·         2 billion adults have no access to banks

·         Blockchain backers advocate its use for secure, tamper-proof digital records

THE  CATCH

Wide blockchain use will disrupt existing industries . Also the poorest will need internet access first

No doubt , as and when the Blockchain-based financial transactions become universal in India , it may neither be possible to generate NEW black money or dispose off EXISTING piles of high denomination currency notes

In absence of a TARGET DATE for universal adoption of Blockchain ( since RBI is opposed to it ) , I urge NDA government , once more to implement what is possible TO DAY , viz :

·         Embedding high currency notes with RFID nano-chips ( as decided recently by the Australian Government ) , or

·         Using technology developed by Dr Shyam Gollakota ( Associate Professor , University of Washington , USA ) ,

  'gshyam@cs.washington.edu'

whereby the metallic SECURITY THREAD in the Currency Notes can be made to store the unique SERIAL NUMBER of each currency note , AND a simple Smart Phone can read that number and transmit that data to any government agency ( IT / ED / CVC / SFIO etc )

It is an INNOVATION which combines two existing technologies and can be implemented by NDA government within a few months !

Although  I await confirmation from Dr Gollakota re practical feasibility of his technology, I am sure , he will fly down to Delhi if requested by Shri Jaitley or Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad

Future does not “ arrive “ to people who await its arrival with folded hands

Determined / Passionate people leave no stone unturned to “ reach “ there !
