Trade  Off  :   Privacy  vs  LiveEasy  ?

Of late , all over the World , media ( online and offline ) , is full of articles / opinions , with regard to the question of protecting the private / personal data of citizens

These are :

·         What data are private and what are public

·         Who has the right to collect / compile such data

·         In what ways such compiled data can be used

·         Does data-collector have a right to sell such data to others for commercial purpose

·         What permissions must be obtained from the citizens before compiling such data

·         Do such permissions constitute a legal contract between the user and the compiler

·         Does the State have an obligation to protect the data willingly given by users to compilers

·         What kind of Data Protection Law is possible to enable such State Protection

·         How will a breach of such law get detected

·         Has the State got required resources to monitor data-use by compilers , to detect misuse

·         If a Citizen-User has granted permission ( for such “ misuse “ ), can State declare it “ illegal “

This is only a partial list

For context , consider the following :

In India, suicide is considered “ illegal “  . You can be sued for “ attempting to commit suicide “

But suicide survivors are never prosecuted !

And ,of course , non-survivors are beyond the reach of the law !

Can State find – and prosecute – persons who display “ clear tendency for suicide “ ?

{  I believe Google / Facebook have  technologies to discover such disturbing trend in a user , from his postings / likes / comments / searches  !  }

Only other day, one expert said on a TV channel :

When a person downloads Facebook Messenger and accepts its Terms and Conditions, it enables the mike on the Smart Phone to pick up each and every “ spoken word “ ( even when the phone is switched off ! ) , and relay to the Facebook server !

Isn’t that “ inviting an intruder “ in your house ?

The rate at which IoT ( Internet of Things ) is proliferating , within 3 /5 years , there will be 50 IoT connected devices PER PERSON , in entire world !

Remember , nearly a BILLION Indians already have “ Internet Connected Mobiles “ !

That means , each one of us will be 24 hours in close proximity of some or other “ thing “ which can eavesdrop on our every word and relay it to thousands of Computer Servers , spread all over the World !

Let me restate ( what I have repeatedly said in the past )

Within one year , no one will ever know the following about any CONTENT ( read , Private Data ) :

·         Nature of Content

·         WHO created

·         WHEN created

·         WHERE created

·         HOW created

·         HOW transmitted / circulated

·         HOW transformed ( “Speech to Text “ is so yesterday transformation )

·         To WHOM sold

·         HOW used

·         WHEN compiled

·         WHO compiled

·         WHERE stored

This is only a partial list of the “ Future of Content

All of this makes the following news , totally “ irrelevant “ :

Narendra Modi App asks for sweeping access: Camera, audio among 22 inputs

Web site tweaks privacy policy after it’s called out on data transfer, BJP’s IT cell chief says, “ no security breach “

My humble request to ,

·         Shri B N Srikrishna Committee ,

Please , do not to recommend a Data Protection Law, which simply , cannot be

     enforced / implemented !

·         Shri Ravi Shankar Prasadji ,

          GDPR ( https://www.eugdpr.org/  ) will come into effect from 25 May 2018

Let us watch how it plays out ( success in stopping misuse of citizen data ) for

one year before considering our own law

For all we know , technology – and not any legislation – might provide a solution to the issue of privacy , - technology such as :

Just  4  DAYS  to  go  !

The new procedure for E Way Bill comes into force on 01 April

With just 4 DAYS to go , there surfaces , a distinct technology to confirm the possibility of my suggestion in :

Here is proof that what I suggested can be implemented – and very FAST too  :

New IoT sensors allow companies to monitor shipments in real time

Low-cost sensors from BeWhere Wireless can monitor location, temperature, humidity, pressure, shakes, and drops. They can also send you alerts of adverse events and the battery power can last up to 10 years.

At Mobile World Congress, we met Alban Hoxha of BeWhere Wireless, a company that's working on wireless sensors that companies can use to track and monitor their shipments and get alerts of adverse events that could happen en route

[It's] a low maintenance device. Very low fee in terms of the service, and they get real time notifications when things happen so they can manage their operations by exceptions.

At the same time, very long life of batteries. Two AA batteries, they can run for as long as 10 years.

Small amount of data, small amount of power, and very deep penetration.

For example, traditional technologies, they don't provide the extent of coverage that these [low-power network modules] provide today."

I do hope , members of GST council and GST Network , find time to read this

Indian Water  Warriors  ?

Yesterday , I wrote :

which contained a reference to an Indian working on extracting clean drinking water from dry desert air – and using only sunlight as energy

He is :

·         Sameer R. Rao   [   srrao@mit.edu  ]

Today , I came across another Indian also working on the same problem – also in USA

He is :

Akshay  Deshmukh   [  akshay.deshmukh@yale.edu  ]

Ref :

·         https://scholar.google.co.in/citations?user=SxKsRlUAAAAJ&hl=en

·         https://elimelechlab.yale.edu/people/akshay-deshmukh

And his work ( getting clean water from dry desert air – using Solar energy ) is at :

Using Solar Power To Bring Clean Drinking Water To Remote Areas

https://scienceblog.com/499980/using-solar-power-to-bring-clean-drinking-water-to-remote-areas/

It speaks poorly, of our University System which fails to encourage bright Indian minds to work here and instead go to American Universities , to conduct research which has greatest – and immediate – practical impact on the health of millions of Indians

I hope this is one aspect that Shri Prakas Javadekarji would want to examine – and set right – while granting greater autonomy to our Universities

In the meantime , will Shri Nitin Gadkariji , consider sending emails to these “ Indian Water Warriors “ , requesting them to immediately return to India and promise them all help to continue their research here ?

May be Shri Gadkariji could offer them a financial “ Grant “ , to set up a JV with ISRO ( our own pioneer in Solar Power technology ) , for commercializing this technology !

A phone call would be faster and much more effective  !

Spirit is Willing …………

That old saying goes :  Spirit is willing but the flesh is week

When you read / reflect on the following news, you may want to re-phrase and say :

Policy  is  perfect  but  implementation  is  patchy  !

HIGHLIGHTS

·         In the urban areas barely  8%, or 3 lakh of the 40.6 lakh houses targeted so far have been constructed.

·         In the rural version of PMAY only 30%, or 28.8 lakh houses, have been completed

Is there any hope that , we can reach that goal of “ Housing for All by 2022 “  ?

I seriously doubt !

But , even now ,there is a possibility to reach  50 % of the targets , if we seriously implement :
