Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

A School Grade Math ?

Elon Musk thinks America can produce its entire year’s requirement of electricity ( approx. 425 GW ), by covering an area of 10,000 sq km ( 100 miles x 100 miles , in some deserted corner of Arizona , Texas or Utah ), with latest generation of solar panels of 21 % efficiency ( of course, backed be a grid-scale Solar Storage Battery, to store / deliver power at night, when sun is not shining )

“ The batteries you need to store the energy, so you have 24/7 power, is 1 mile by 1 mile, ” Musk said at the National Governors Association Summer Meeting in Rhode Island in 2017.

One square-mile. That’s it. ”. He first came up with this idea in 2015

He has not come up with any suggestion on how to raise $ 5 Trillion for such a project (  5000 Billion )

Going by  “ Musk Math “ , we in India may not need more than 1700 sq Km of desert area to produce all the power that we need , year round

Here is the math :

Ø  One hour of Sunshine falling on our Earth can generate enough electricity to power the Earth for one full year

Ø  One hour of Sunshine falling on India's land area of 3,000,000 square kilometers , can generate enough electricity to power our nation for ONE year !

Ø  Most of India gets 6 hours of Sunshine daily for some 300 days in a year !

Ø  So , as a nation , we get 1800 hours of Sunshine , every year

Ø  If we were to cover our entire land area ( of 3,000,000 sq km ) with Solar Panels , we could get enough electricity in one year ( ie: in 1800 hours ) , which will meet our power needs for 1800 YEARS ! ( about 5000 trillion Kwh ! )

It is said that Indian Sages invented the concept of ZERO but it was the commercial merchants of Europe who capitalized on it

It seems “Deja Vue “ in case of generating Solar Power in un-inhabited deserts

Our own Power Grid Corporation of India , published following 231 page report as far back as 2013  :

Thar , Rann of Kutchh, Ladakh , Lahul & Spiti / December 2013

Ø  These deserts have , between them , the potential to generate 315.7 GW of Solar plus Wind power !

Ø  For the entire project , the investments envisaged are :

#  By   2022............. Rs  2    lakh*crore

#  By   2032..............Rs  16  lakh*crore

#  By   2050...........   Rs  43  lakh*crore ( approx. USD 615 Billion )

But, after 7 years since publication of this report, we have still not moved beyond the “ Planning  Stage “  as can be seen from the following news report :

Extract :

Ladakh, Thar, Rann of Kutch, Lahaul and Spiti have the potential to generate 315.7 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind power, and will require investments of 43.7 trillion over the next 30 years to 2050, according to a study conducted by the state-owned Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. The government is also exploring the feasibility of setting up storage projects in Leh-Ladakh.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now , leaving aside the requirement of Rs 2 lakh*crore by 2022 for desert-based Solar Power projects ( Power Grid Corporation study of 2013 ), how much fund is being allocated to “ Renewable Energy “, in the last budget ?

Here is the answer :

( source :  GoI’s conflicting goals — electricity for all, renewable energy targets and a ₹100 trillion infrastructure pipeline / 04 Feb 2020 )

Extract :

Surprisingly, the financing of new renewable energy capacity of 163 GW, at a cost of ₹9 trillion, has been left entirely to the private sector

While the report states there is a “well-stocked pipeline to FY25 because of 450 GW target visibility,” only 3% of projects are currently at the implementation stage.
