Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

    [ B ]   Bus Signal Priority System , and

    [ C ]   Common SMart IoT Connectiv ( CoSMiC ) software ,

- have been launched under Intelligent Transportation System Endeavor for Indian Cities Phase-II initiative of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

[ A ]   Onboard Driver Assistance and Warning System ODAWS:

ODAWS incorporates vehicle-borne sensors for monitoring

#  Driver propensity and

#  Vehicle surroundings to deliver

#  Acoustic and visual alerts for driver assistance.

The project involves the development of sub-modules such as :

#  Navigational unit,

#  driver assistance Console, and

#  mmWave Radar Sensor.

The ODAWS algorithm is used to interpret sensor data and offer real-time notifications to the driver, boosting road safety.

[ B ]  Bus Signal Priority System

Bus signal priority System is an operational strategy that modifies normal traffic signal operations to better accommodate in-service public buses at signal-controlled intersections. Unlike a blind priority that is given for emergency vehicles, here it is a conditional priority, which is given only when there is an overall reduction in delay for all vehicles. The developed system will enable to minimize person delay by providing priority to public transport buses, either through Green extension or Red truncation, considering all vehicles approaching a signalized intersection.

[ C ]   Common SMart iot Connectiv ( CoSMiC )

It is a middleware software providing standard based deployment of IoT adhering to oneM2M based global standard.

It facilitates users and application service providers in various vertical domains to use application agnostic open standards and open interfaces for end to end communication with well-defined common service functionalities complying with oneM2M standard.

With this in view, CoSMiC common service layer is used to interface any vendor specific standards and for increasing interoperability with smart city dashboard.

The horizontal silo architecture ensures interoperability and data exchange between different IOT devices and applications and avoids vendor lock-in.

The CoSMiC platform also provides Interworking Proxy Entity (IPE) APIs for connecting non-oneM2M ( NoDN ) devices or third-party applications to get connected to the CoSMiC platform.

CoSMiC provides a Dashboard page showing :

#  IoT units,

#  Products,

#  Applications, and

#   its Live data in a Geographical Information System (GIS) map.

A secondary data repository is also available for historic charts and reports. CoSMiC provides an end-to-end solution for the seamless connection of IoT devices and applications.

MY  TAKE  :

Ø  Internet of Vehicles ( IoV ) ?....................... [  04  Mar  2017  ]

Extract :

Exactly what we need – and NOW  !

I expect that , over the next 5 years , all of these will converge into an Internet of Vehicles ( IoV ), when :

Most vehicles will  be electric ( essentially , “ computers on wheels “ ),

automatically determining the best / shortest, route / stops and optimizing vehicle

performance . Mobile Apps will be a governing device

Vehicles will be internet connected with one another , exchanging data

Vehicles will be internet connected with servers of Transport Authorities / Traffic

Police / Pollution Control Boards and a host of other governmental / institutional

organizations , and be relaying all sorts of data  24*7

Vehicles will report accidents ( being hit ) and thefts ( being stolen ) , on their own !

All vehicles will carry a whole lot of “ Sensors “ , which will continuously “

monitor “ the conditions of the vehicles and relay the same to all the authorities

All vehicles will be equipped with RADAR – LIDAR –CAMERAS – GPS locators – /

Augmented Reality  etc , to avoid collisions / accidents

Prepaid RFID chips ( linked to Aadhar / Bank Accounts  ? ) for Road Taxes /

Insurance Premiums / Toll charges / Fines / Carbon Credits ( through DBT )

In-Built Sensors will measure , ( and request maintenance on their own ! ),

      #   Engine ( or Electric Motor ) temperature

      #   Pressures / Displacements / Compression Ratios in case of petrol / diesel

Vehicles / Battery Charge Levels / fuel consumption

     #   Emission Levels ( PM2.5 / CO2 etc ) in petrol / diesel vehicles

     #   Tyre pressures / wear and tear of moving parts / RPM

     #   Vehicle speed / acceleration / braking distance

     #   Proximity to other moving / stationary vehicles or objects

     #   Weather conditions / Visibility levels / Traffic Density

     #   Condition of the road being traversed ( co-efficient of friction )

     #   Condition of the person driving ( sleepy / drunk etc )

     #   Whatever else you want “ measured / monitored / relayed

To know , how such an Internet of Vehicles ( IoV ) can solve the various problems

listed above , you may want to read my following earlier blogs (  all sent as

Smart cars turning smarter with vehicle-to-everything communication

 Extract :

Cars are offering more than mobility with most new generation of vehicles Internet-enabled. With the passengers carrying smartphones and wearables, the car is a virtual network of smart devices – if used properly.

Global automobile major Suzuki Motor Corporation and its Indian peer Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) have joined hands with IIT-H to work on a futuristic communication technology that lets vehicles talk to one another and avert accidents.

When equipped with V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communication technology, one vehicle can send alerts to another, when needed to take corrective action and avoid collision.

“It can help an ambulance send alerts, which will be transmitted live to the cars along the road, prodding them to give way,” a Maruti Suzuki official said.

The alert system will also share minute details like the distance between the vehicles on a real-time basis. Car drivers get a pre-alert about the presence of a vehicle approaching the wrong way.

Real-time information is shared with the driver about the distance and direction of the approach, averting head-one collisions. The uses can be many – a smart car equipped with V2X can save pedestrians, send info on road hazards such as potholes, as it negotiates them, to vehicles behind, giving them more time to avoid the problem.

The three partners demonstrated the technology at the institute’s Kandi facility near here on Wednesday, with five Maruti Suzuki’ Balenos showcasing how the solution can help ensure accident-free roads.

These prototype vehicles, and use case scenarios were demonstrated to Munisekhar Avileli, Advisor of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Kishore Babu YGSC, Deputy Director General (Standardisation-R&D-Innovation) of Department of Telecommunications, VJ Christopher, Director (Wireless Monitoring Organization, DoT) and Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary (Industries and Commerce and IT, Government of Telangana).

The technology can also help tap the idle computing capacity of the microprocessor in the car when it is not being used for driving.
