The air today is thick with the clash of ideas surrounding Artificial Intelligence, truly a case of "daggers drawn between AI evangelists and doomsayers" as I've observed in the recent discourse. On one side, we hear enthusiastic visions of a future transformed by intelligent machines; on the other, dire warnings of unforeseen consequences. This polarization is not new, but its intensity reflects the rapid advancements we are witnessing.
I've been reflecting on this divide, particularly as I engage with my own digital twin. The evangelists, like Peter H. Diamandis (peter@a360.com), speak of a new economic era, where declining production costs driven by AI will unlock immense opportunities Low Cost Production and AI. We see tangible examples of AI's efficiency in customer service, with companies like IndiGo launching 6Eskai and Air India introducing Maharaja, both AI-powered chatbots designed to streamline interactions and significantly reduce human workload. Summi Sharma (summi.sharma@goindigo.in), Senior Vice President of Ifly and Customer Experience at IndiGo, highlighted how such tools enhance customer experience and reflect a dedication to technological advancements Chatbots: Some for Businesses, Some for You. These chatbots, using advanced GPT-4 technology, are even programmed to mimic human emotions and infuse humour, demonstrating a push for more engaging AI.
Yet, as the capabilities grow, so do the concerns of the doomsayers. This takes me back to the compelling debate between [Elon Musk]() and Mark Zuckerberg years ago, a clash of titans where Musk warned of AI's existential dangers, while Zuckerberg dismissed these fears as "irresponsible" Artificial Intelligence: Destroyer of Privacy?. I had pointed out then how Zuckerberg's own AI assistant, Jarvis, learned from his and his daughter's daily behaviours, accumulating vast amounts of personal data. This voluntary (and often involuntary) sharing of information, as Eric Schmidt and Jared Cohen (jared.cohen@gs.com) of Google had predicted in "The New Digital Age," would intensify trends where "people will share more than they’re even aware of."
The core idea I want to convey is this — take a moment to notice that I had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. I had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and I had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context.
Indeed, the privacy implications were something I extensively explored in blogs like "Seeing AI through Google Glass?" and "Privacy does not live here!" I questioned whether the Supreme Court could truly halt the march of technology, anticipating a future where devices like Google Glass or Microsoft's "Seeing AI" app could read emotions and gather personal data without explicit permission. Melissa Heikkilä's (melissa.heikkila@ft.com) reporting for MIT Technology Review on DeepMind's efforts to make chatbots safer, particularly with their new chatbot Sparrow, highlighted the critical role of humans in the loop. Sara Hooker (sara@adaptionlabs.ai), who leads Cohere for AI, aptly pointed out the "brittleness" of conversational AI systems, and Geoffrey Irving, a safety researcher at DeepMind, emphasized how human guidance could supervise machines. Yet, Emily Bender (ebender@uw.edu) of the University of Washington cautioned against the "Star Trek fantasy" of an all-knowing computer, suggesting it's "infantilizing" to rely solely on an expert to give us answers How DeepMind thinks it can make chatbots safer.

This ongoing tension between AI's boundless potential and its profound risks is a dialogue we must continue. It's not about choosing a side, but about intelligently navigating the path forward, ensuring that our innovations serve humanity and respect fundamental principles like privacy and safety.
