At long last, TESLA is here !

At least, technically. And may not change India’s EV eco-system in any significant manner, in short term

Here are headlines from News papers :

It's official! Tesla readies for charge in Bengaluru

Tesla sets up India subsidiary in Bengaluru

Tesla drives into Bengaluru with new company

===================================================

Name :  Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt Ltd

Paid Up Capital : Rs 1 lakh  /  Authorized Capital : Rs 15 lakh

Directors :

Ø  Vaibhav Taneja – Chief Accounting Officer ……………………… vaibhav@tesla.com

Ø  David Jon Feinstein – Global Senior Director…………………… david.feinstein@tesla.com

Ø  Venkatrangam Sreeram –  Entrepreneur…………………………..venkatrangam@tesla.com

===================================================

Why this news is unlikely to shake up Indian EV industry ?

 [ A ]    SELLING PRICE

Ø  In USA, Model 3 sells for $ 30,000 ( approx., Rs 21 lakhs )

Ø  If fully imported into India, it will cost the buyer Rs 55-60 lakhs ( with all duties / taxes )

Ø  At such a high price, there can be no more than a few hundred buyers at the most. For a few hundred or even a few thousands, Elon Musk is unlikely to set up in India, a full-fledged manufacturing plant

Ø  But, by 2024, he expects Li battery prices to drop to $ 50 / Kwh as against current $ 120-130 / Kwh

Ø  By that time, he may also come up with a model with a 15 Kwh battery

Ø  Mass produced, such a model might end up with a sale price of Rs 10 lakh

Ø  That would compete with, Mahindra e-Verito ( 21 Kwh battery ) selling for Rs 9- 10 lakhs

             ( for details, read :   To beat OR not to beat ?     /     29 Dec 2020 )

  ===================================================

[ B ]    INVESTMENT

Ø  Tesla’s Giga-factories under construction ( Berlin and Austin ) will cost $ 5 billion ( Rs 36,500 crore )  and each will produce ONE MILLION cars PER YEAR, by 2024

Ø  Even if TESLA manages to introduce in India a “ localized cheaper “ model costing no more than Rs 30 lakhs, it won’t sell more than 10,000 units / year. Elon Musk would not consider a volume worth investing even Rs 4,000 crore which MG Motor India ( Indian subsidiary of China’s largest automaker, SAIC ) is in the process of investing

            [ source :  MG to launch new EV under ₹20lakh  /   MINT – 07 Jan ]

           Extract :

Ø  MG Motor India Ltd, a new entrant in the domestic market, plans to launch an electric vehicle (EV) under 20 lakh. It is also developing a lithium-ion battery with a range of 500km on a single charge to address ‘range anxiety’.

Ø  The EV will be rolled out by the end of 2022, said Rajeev Chaba, president and managing director, MG Motor India [ rajeev.chaba@mgmotor.co.in ]

Ø  “We are looking at another electric car in the sub- 20 lakh range that will hopefully come at the end of next year. That will expand our portfolio in EVs

===================================================

[ C ]     RANGE ANXIETY IN ABSENCE OF BATTERY CHARGING STATIONS

Ø  A major factor of TESLA’s success in USA, is its 20,000 + Supercharger Battery Charging stations

Ø  In India, we have approx. 250 by now ! This number is unlikely to grow big, any time soon

Ø  Most India-made EVs will have built-in feature to enable night-time charging at home ( even our Central Govt is likely to make this feature mandatory in all new buildings )

===================================================

[ D ]   EV WITH  10 KWH  BATTERY GETTING CHARGED FROM SOLAR PANELS MOUNTED ON CAR ROOF

Ø  All over the World, manufacturers are experimenting with EVs getting their small batteries charged from Solar Panels mounted on their roofs . These include,

#   APTERA

#   SONO Motors

#   LightYear

#   Hanergy

Ø  It is a pity that our own ISRO’s path-breaking innovation in Solar Roof powered cars ( needing no battry charging stations ), has not been “ commercialized “ so far ( - I suspect vested interests ). May be, with this arrival-announcement of TESLA, some Indian EV manufacturer will do this

         ( source : https://myblogepage.blogspot.com/2020/12/to-beat-or-not-to-beat.html )

          Extract :

Ø  When such car arrives, there will be no need to subsidize / incentivize, either the buyers or the car manufacturers !

Ø  Only such a Solar Powered car ( with a 10 Kwh Li battery ) can realize India’s dream of 30 % EV population by 2030.

===================================================

[ E ]   BATTERY INNOVATIONS ( INCLUDING REPLACEMENT OF LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES )

Once again, despite lots of  “ Technology Break-through “ announcements from

TESLA -  GM – VW – QuantumScape etc., the Chinese seem to be leading

( read : China Holds the Commanding Heights in Advanced Batteries  )

BUT,

Ø  If Shri Narendra Modiji finds a few minutes to read this blog – and go all-out to support, then two Indian girls can not only take-on and defeat these World Giants in innovative Energy Technology but can help save 17 lakh premature deaths taking place in India each year due to Air Pollution !

             #   Their technology :

The proprietary battery technology from Nexus uses bio-organic

nano-materials with unique fast regenerative properties. The

concepts of Bio-Mimicry and Industrial Ecology form the development

structure of the battery, and give the bio-degradable nature to both

                   the electrodes and the electrolyte

The entire process from the cradle to the grave doesn’t leave out any

waste and these batteries are fully recyclable. Fast generative nano-

materials from crop residue allow the charge to remain longer

due to properties that make them sticky.

Ø  Just consider the following “ Mind Boggling “ implications of this innovation :

      #  All over India, farmers, instead of burning , can sell their stubble ( Crop

          Residue ) and make money

      #  India produces 500 million tons of CROP RESIDUE each year of which

          360 million tons are burnt

      #  Stopping burning means stopping Air Pollution ( I urge Supreme Court /

Arvind Kejriwalji / Kissan Unions  to take a note )

            #  Small / Cheap / High Density battery cells will enable assembling

together, VERY LARGE ( MW range ) Battery Packs which can store

Solar Power ( generated during daytime ) for use at nights

This will accelerate generation of Solar Roof Panel power (

decentralized ) and Grid Level Solar in our deserts

           #   Of great health benefit would be smaller Solar Energy Storage devices

( similar to Tesla’s POWERWALL units ) and costing less than Rs 5000 -

Mounted on kitchen walls, these power storage units would supply

power to Electric Chulhas ( Cookers ) to 80 crore Indian households

and eliminate need for importing LPG – NPG ( saving billions of rupees

worth of imports ) – and dramatically reducing indoor pollution

               (  Read :  Dear Shri Goyalji : How about a Solar Cooker ? )

            #   India would not need to worry about supply of Lithium - Cobalt etc.
from Argentina - Chile - Bolivia - Australia

            #   We would not need to depend on China which has a near monopoly of
                  supply of Li-ion Battery Cells ( 70 % of World Supply )

            #   Since battery developed by NEXUS POWER are recyclable, there will
be no danger to environment from used batteries being dumped into
garbage dumps and leaching toxic matter into the ground and
                 contaminating sources of drinking water

Not that I love WhatsApp less

It is only that I love more, getting some money from WhatsApp for selling my Personal Data – and earning billions ( and not sharing with me, even one Rupee ! )

Dear Smt Meenakshiji,

( Chair – Parliamentary Committee on IT / re-writing Data Protection Bill )

Only yesterday, I sent to you following mail :

Smt. Meenakshiji : Devil at the Door ? ………………[ 10 Jan 2021 ]

It now seems TURKEY has decided to “ ban WhatsApp “ [ - but we cannot ? because we are a Democracy ? ]

And , WhatsApp “ new privacy policy “ cannot apply to EU / UK ?

Because these countries have already passed laws forbidding any “ Sharing of Data “ by mobile apps with anyone ( including with their parent companies )

As I have repeatedly suggested in the past ( through some 26 e mails ) :

Ø  We need not BAN any Social Media ( sites or mobile apps )

Ø  We MUST make it impossible for them to operate in India, unless they enter into legally binding ( in Indian Courts ) agreements with the Govt of India, to compensate their Indian Users for “sale “of their Personal Data ,as conceptualized in :

#  Digital Dividend from Demographic Data [ 4 D ]…….. [ 14 Feb 2019 ]

Smt. Meenakshiji : Devil at the Door ?

This is no more just a “ Wake Up Call “. It is a “ Wake Up Alarm “ !

Are you using WhatsApp for chatting ?  Want to continue using it for chatting ?

Do you use WhatsApp for sending “ Business Messages “ to “ Co-workers “ of your “Company “ ?

Following is how WhatsApp interprets its revised PRIVACY POLICY ( if in doubt, ask sharply ) :

Ø  Business Messages “ are messages you send to other members of the Parliamentary Committee on IT, which you head

Ø  Those members are your “ Co-workers “ ( and all 32 lakh government employees as well )

Ø  All the 3 wings of democratic India ( Legislative/Judiciary / Administrative ) are your “ Company

So, if  you want to continue sending any messages to anyone of these, you MUST grant WhatsApp  absolute permission to pick up your personal data and sell it to a million other companies !

Smt Lekhiji

[ mrs.mlekhi@sansad.nic.in ],

Only 4 days ago, I sent to you my suggestion ( for regulating ALL Social Media ), through following mail :

Thank You, Smt Meenakshiji ……………………..[ 07 Jan 2021 ]

Private Sector companies realize that it will be next to impossible to “ force “ , all of their employees to stop using WhatsApp – and switch over to safer alternatives. But I have no doubt, they will prevail ultimately

As far as national governments are concerned, I am sure CHINA will soon follow TURKEY in banning use of WhatsApp by government employees. I am sure, China will find a domestic app to replace WhatsApp

Some people will argue that TURKEY – CHINA can do this since both are ruled by dictators but, we are a DEMOCRATIC country, and should evolve some kind of CONSENSUS ( on regulatory mechanism ] to avoid resistance to Data Protection Law -  when it gets passed by Parliament - ( like present messy situation in respect of Farm Laws )

But my suggestion does NOT require “ banning “ ( - sounding dictatorial ) .

It only compels FACEBOOK (and its tribe) to compensate the users for using ( aka “selling “) their PERSONAL DATA ( aggregated / anonymized )

My estimate of this compensation >  Rs 30,000 per month to each of the 500 million Indian Users of Social Media platforms !

I am reminded of :

The Taming of the Shrew

Petruchio " tames" her with various psychological torments, such as keeping her from eating and drinking, until she becomes a desirable, compliant, and obedient bride.
