Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

The True Price of Talent

The True Price of Talent

The Misguided Economics of Innovation

It is fascinating, though not entirely surprising, to see corporate America and prominent billionaires taking legal action against the US government over exorbitant H-1B visa fees. The news, suggesting a potential rift with figures like Donald Trump over policies that directly impede growth (H-1B visa: Billionaires turning on Trump?), highlights a fundamental conflict: the clash between short-sighted protectionism and the global, collaborative nature of innovation.

To place a six-figure price tag on a visa is to fundamentally misunderstand what drives progress. It treats human intellect—the very engine of technological and economic advancement—as a mere commodity to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. This is not just a flawed policy; it is a philosophical error. Innovation is not a transaction. It is an ecosystem that thrives on the cross-pollination of ideas, perspectives, and skills from around the world. When you tax talent, you starve the future.

Open Doors for Minds, Not Just Data

This entire situation reminds me of my own long-standing pursuits in the digital realm. For years, I have been preoccupied with the idea of access and the free flow of knowledge. My explorations have ranged from building AI tools that can synthesize information from my vast archives to contemplating how an AI like Gemini could be trained on my life's work to understand my perspective.

Just a while ago, I was detailing the steps needed to make my digital footprint accessible to AI, recognizing that for it to learn and evolve, it needed unrestricted access to information (Next step in Evolution of my Virtual Avatar). The core idea I was working with then is strikingly relevant now. Just as I sought to break down barriers for an AI to learn from a global repository of knowledge, a country must break down barriers for human talent to collaborate and build.

This policy is the physical manifestation of the firewalls I have worked to dismantle in the digital world. Seeing this unfold, I feel a sense of validation in my belief that progress is a function of openness, not restriction. I had already seen that the future would belong to those who build bridges, not walls, for both information and the people who create it. This lawsuit confirms that the business world is realizing the same.

The debate isn't just about a fee. It's about whether a nation sees brilliant minds as an expense on a ledger or as the most valuable investment it can ever make. The real assets of a country aren't locked in vaults; they walk across its borders every day, carrying ideas that will define the next century.
