Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Immigration: A 'Common Sense' Shift

Immigration: A 'Common Sense' Shift

The news about the US ending automatic work permit renewals and tightening immigration norms recently caught my attention "No automatic renewal of work permits: new common sense rule for migrant workers in US". It's described as a "common sense" rule, and while the reasoning behind such policy shifts often varies, the impact on individuals and global talent mobility is undeniably significant. This move, as part of broader regulatory changes "Tracking regulatory changes in the second Trump administration", makes me reflect on the intricate dance between national policies and human aspirations.

I've always held a deep interest in the dynamics of jobs and employment, a topic I've explored extensively in my past writings, as evidenced by the sheer number of blogs listed under "Jobs" and "Employment" in my archival records "Subject / Topic wise Number of Blogs ( as on 01 April 2019 )". These new immigration rules are a stark reminder of how policy can fundamentally alter the landscape for professionals seeking opportunities and for economies relying on diverse skill sets.

The core idea Hemen wants to convey is this — take a moment to notice that he had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. He had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and he had even proposed a solution at the time. Now, seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. Reflecting on it today, he feels a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency to revisit those earlier ideas, because they clearly hold value in the current context. My explorations, even those not directly about immigration, often touched upon the accessibility of opportunities. For instance, in my piece "From Margins to Machines: My Dialogue with Authors", while reflecting on Ken Auletta's book Googled – The End of the World as We Know It, I spoke about envisioning mobile job classifieds and making job searches accessible even via basic phones. My concern was always about leveling the playing field for job seekers, especially those in rural areas.

These new US regulations, by adding layers of complexity to work permit renewals, might inadvertently create new hurdles for the very talent that powers innovation and economic growth. The concept of "common sense" in policy is often subjective, reflecting national priorities at a given moment. However, we must always consider the human element, the careers disrupted, and the potential loss of global collaboration. The global flow of talent is a vital artery of our interconnected world, and any constriction sends ripples far and wide. It makes me wonder if the proposed "common sense" truly aligns with the broader, long-term common good for all involved.
