Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

A Bite Out of Society

A Bite Out of Society

The numbers are staggering: 10,000 dog bites a day in India. This isn't just a statistic; it's a daily crisis unfolding on our streets. When I read about the startling scale of this issue, with reports suggesting nearly 3.7 million incidents a year (Facebook Post, Instagram Reel), it's clear we are looking at a profound systemic failure.

It is easy to react with fear and point fingers at the animals. However, this is a deeply human problem. It’s a failure of urban planning, of waste management, and most importantly, a failure of data. We are reacting to a crisis without understanding its scope. We manage a human census with meticulous detail (India Census), yet we have no real idea how many stray animals live among us, where they are, or their health status. Without this fundamental data, any intervention is merely a guess.

This reminds me of my thinking around creating automated, intelligent systems. A while ago, I was conceptualizing a 'Perpetual AI Machine' for my blog, a system designed to crawl, analyze, and generate content with minimal human intervention (Blog Genie Revamp). The core idea was to build a robust system to manage a complex flow of information. The stray dog crisis is a far more critical management problem that demands a similar, systems-based approach. The core idea I want to convey is this — I have long advocated for systematic, data-driven solutions to complex challenges. Reflecting on it today, seeing how the lack of a system leads to such widespread suffering for both humans and animals, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is. We need to stop with piecemeal solutions and build a real, functioning system.

A Path Forward: Data, Not Drama

Instead of endless debates between activists and residents, we should focus on a concrete, technology-driven solution.

  1. A National Dog Census: We can leverage technology for this. Drones with image recognition, coupled with community-sourcing through a simple mobile app, could give us an accurate count and map of the stray population in months, not years.
  2. A Centralized Database: This national database would track each animal, its location, and its sterilization and vaccination status. This is the bedrock of any effective public health program.
  3. Targeted Action: With this data, municipal bodies can move from random, often ineffective, drives to targeted, efficient sterilization and vaccination programs. Resources can be allocated where the need is greatest.

This isn't an unsolvable problem. It is a management challenge that we have the technology and capability to address. It's time to move past the emotional arguments and implement a logical, data-driven, and humane system to ensure our public spaces are safe for everyone—human and animal alike.
