If China can , so can We

And even better

In my yesterday’s blog, ( sent as E Mail to EESL ) , I wrote :

If “ sub-contracting “ is the idea , why go through this entire “ Challenge Exercise “ ?

Why not just contact the 38 existing e – car manufacturers , encouraging them to set up manufacturing facilities in India ? [ TATA and M&M are already producing ]

If assured of guaranteed order from EESL [ say 25,000 cars each per year , to two selected manufacturers ] , they will be happy to make cars as per winning design

Then today, I came across the following news reports :

Nissan's first electric sedan designed for China began production Monday at the start of a wave of dozens of planned lower-cost electrics being created by global automakers for their biggest market.

Manufacturers including General Motors and Volkswagen are poised this year to launch a flood of electric sedans, minivans and SUVs designed for Chinese tastes and budgets.

Nissan, Tesla, GM and others sell imports or electrified versions of models made by Chinese partners, but the market is dominated by low-cost local rivals including BYD Auto

China's government sees electric cars as a promising industry and a way to clean up its smog-choked cities.

Government subsidies have built China into the biggest market for electrics, but Beijing is shifting the burden to automakers with sales quotas and tougher fuel efficiency standards

Strength of demand in China means global car makers are turning to the country as an ideal place to develop new electric vehicles, with the government’s support for the technology adding impetus

“Western companies want to be in such a big market and the only way to get access is to partner up with a local company.”

And as to “ how we can do better than China “ , this is what I suggested in my yesterday’s email to EESL :

If at all , there has to be a “ Challenge “ , it should read :

“ E Car with a range of 100 km / charge and costing no more than Rs 7 lakh

It should have Solar Panel mounted roof top to continuously charge a small Li-ion Battery which can be also charged overnight at home , using a standard 220 V domestic outlet

No need for any roadside “ Battery Charging Infrastructure “ , no “ Range Anxiety “ for the buyers , no need for any Subsidy ( under FAME II  being launched in Sept and expected to cost Rs 5,500 crores ) !

Dear Shri Saurabh Kumarji [  MD – EESL  ]  :

I urge you to consider my above-mentioned suggestion

And while negotiating with those Global E Car Manufacturers , you may want to make it clear that EESL will notBUY “ e-cars but only take these on “ WET LEASE

EESL : Getting Away from Straitjacket ?

Following news appeared in Eco Times ( 22 Aug ) :

Extract :

State owned Energy Efficiency Services, which leads the country’s energy efficiency and conservation drive, has thrown open a challenge for entrepreneurs and start ups “ to develop electric cars that are more efficient in terms of performance and cheaper “ than what it had sought in its e-car tender last year

EESL…. Has sought variants of electric cars that can run 200 km or more in a single charge and is priced not more than Rs 10 lakh

The solutions , if viable, will be scaled up and commercialized BY EESL ……

EESL has also sought ,

#  solutions in the field of Charging Stations , which is instrumental for the success of
    electric mobility initiative in India

“ We are trying to go away from the straitjacket approach “ ,  Kumar told ET

While welcoming EESL’s intention of “ going away from straitjacket “ , following questions arise :

·         Is this “ challenge “, open to “ Indian Entrepreneurs and Start Ups “ only, or is it also open to existing Electric Car manufacturers ( both local and foreign ) ?

·         Are the participants required to submit “ Conceptual Designs “ only or also “ Manufacturing Drawings “ / “ Working Prototype “ as well  ?

I could not find any answers to these on EESL web site

Nor any mention of this “ challenge “  or any tabulation  of “ Minimum Specifications / Performance Criteria “

·         World over , existing car manufacturers are “ forward integrating “

[   Car manufacturing  >  Ride sharing   >  Car leasing   ]

Now EESL is not a “ Car Manufacturer “

After “ Buying “ from manufacturers , EESL is “ Leasing  E-Cars “ to various Govt departments

Why does it want to “ backward integrate “ into “ Car Manufacturing “ ?

News report reads :

“ The solutions , if viable, will be scaled up and commercialized BY EESL “

EESL is planning to replace existing govt fleet of 500,000 petrol / diesel vehicles with electric vehicles , in next 3 – 4 years ( as per EESL web site )

By “ commercialization “ if EESL plans to manufacture e-cars , it will require EESL to set up its own “ Manufacturing Facility “ with a capacity to produce , 50,000 cars per year ( a sales value of Rs 5,000 Cr @ Rs 10 lakh / car )

If we assume a “ Capital Output Ratio “ of 1 : 1 for this industry , then that would require a Capital Investment of Rs 5,000 crore  !

Unless EESL plans that proposed  “ commercialization “ ( of the winning design ) by “ sub-contracting “ the actual manufacturing to one or more , existing E Car manufacturers

If at all , there has to be a “ Challenge “ , it should read :

“ E Car with a range of 100 km / charge and costing no more than Rs 7 lakh

No need for any roadside “ Battery Charging Infrastructure “ , no “ Range Anxiety “ for the buyers , no need for any Subsidy ( under FAME II  being launched in Sept and expected to cost Rs 5,500 crores ) !

In that case , following parties might get interested :

SONO  Motors  (  https://sonomotors.com/  )

Specs :
·         Range  >  250 Km

·         Price    >  Euro 16,000 ( Rs 13 lakh )

·         330 integrated solar cells mounted on top , sides , front / rear hoods , to charge battery while under sun . Can be charged at home using domestic outlet , in 13 hours ( overnight charging )

·         Bidirectional charging enables charging of home electronic devices , from SONO car battery

·         SONO eliminates need for road-side Battery Charging Stations but can be charged in 3.5 hours

LIGHTYEAR   (  https://lightyear.one/  )

·         Range   >    400 km to  800 km

·         Price     >    Euro  119,000  (  Rs 96. Lakhs )

·         Battery charged by solar power but can also be charged at home using standard domestic outlet

OUR VERY OWN ISRO

·         Way back in May 2017 , ISRO demonstrated a OMNI van fitted with Solar panels on its roof , charging a relatively small Lithium-ion Battery ( also developed by ISRO and now in the process of being licensed to several Indian firms

·         Pilgrims who lost life in 2013…..          42  ( in a stampede at Railway Station )

This comparison shows that Kumbh will be nearly 60 TIMES bigger ( in terms of pilgrims ) than Haj  ! ( 120 million vs  2 million  )

As to how Saudi manages the vast crowd at Haj, following makes interesting reading :

But , with all their “ Tourist Revenue “ , I am surprised why Saudis have not thought of implementing my following suggestion ,

           SIMPLE SOLUTION for STEMPEDE      [  24  Sept  2015  ]

despite the fact that ,

·         In 1990 ,  some 1400 pilgrims died in Haj stampede

·         On 23 Sept 2015 , some 770 pilgrims died in a stampede

But as far as  KUMBH- 2019  is concerned , we have following considerations :

·         Because of expected crowd of 120 million pilgrims, threat of a stampede are far greater / real

·         We have an opportunity to provide to Foreign Visitors , such an enjoyable / happy / fun experience that the Kumbh Mela site becomes a YEAR ROUND attraction, drawing 15 million Foreign Visitors in 2019 to India ( as compared to 10 million who visited in 2017 and brought in $ 27 million of exchange )

To achieve these goals , I urge Shri Yogi Adityanathji [ CM – UP ] and Shri V K Anand [ Kumbh Mela Adhikari ] , to consider the following precautionary SAFETY measures to prevent a stampede :

METHOD  A  [  HORIZONTAL  CONVEYORS  ] :

Horizontally running escalators on ground level ( like Conveyor Belts ) , to bring the
pilgrims from camps to bathing ghats where they get onto “ short-run “ escalators for moving towards the water and backward from the water

On both the sides of these “ short – run “ escalators , there will be “ Fountains “ of holy water , forming a long ( 100 ft  )  CANOPY / CASCADE , under which pilgrims will pass , without walking

BATHING  METHOD :  Under “ FOUNTAINS “ of holy waters

METHOD  B  [  ROPE WAYS  WITH  HANGING  CHAIRS  ] :

Just install , one above another ( vertically ) , several rope-ways with hanging chairs for 2 persons per chair , safely secured by belts

All rope-ways picking up pilgrims at the Boarding Station and then dropping off at the Disembarkation Station , after passing under Holy Water Sprinklers at the bathing ghats ( without having to get off the suspended moving chairs )

BATHING  METHOD  :  A “ Shower “ of holy water

METHOD   C  [  ROLLER  COASTERS  ] :

Pilgrims will get onto roller coaster trollies at the Embarkation point .

Coaster will move towards the river waters ( at a height of 20 feet for a panoramic viewing experience ) .

When it reaches 30 feet over the river , coaster will slope down in such a way that the trollies dip into the water

The pilgrims will get submerged into the water  [ only up to their chests  ] for a distance of 10 feet

At the end , coaster trollies will emerge from the water , again rise to a height of 20 feet and return to a Dis-embarkation point

BATHING  METHOD  :  A genuine DIP into the holy waters

Main Concept :

Simply eliminate walking ( stampede happens when impatient people try to overtake
pilgrims walking in front of them or have ability to run helter-skelter under some
     perceived threat )

What can this “ Escalator / Ropeway “ innovation do for India ?

In 2017 , India got 10 million foreign visitors , bringing in $ 27 Billion

$ 2700 per foreign visitor as against Saudi getting  $ 6,000 per visitor  !

With proposed innovation , this figure could well go up to 15 million tourists in 2019 , bringing in $ 150 billion in foreign exchange  ! ( $ 10,000 per visitor  !  )

This is an opportunity to re-write our TOURISM story  !

I hope Shri K J Alphons ( Minister of Tourism / mos.tourism@gov.in ) asks ,

·         Ministry of Urban Development to prepare a MASTER PLAN for Kumbh centered around this CONVEYOR-BELT  concept

·         India’s leading Engineering Companies to submit their “ Expression of Interest “

=================================================

What else can make Kumbh , “ The Greatest Show on Earth “  ?

Please consider the following :

·         Strategically located “ Food Courts “ and “ Shopping Malls “

·         A doctor with emergency “ Medical Aids / Ambulance “ in each Police Station

·         Free Wi Fi hotspots all over the ground ( Foreign Visitors want to use Skype ! )

·         A 200 ft tall “ Central Tower “ with “ Viewing Gallery “

·         Sitting / resting benches for the elderly, in small  “ Gardens “ all over the place

·         No entry to any private vehicles

·         “ Bicycle Lanes “ with Bicycle Stands every 500 m ( with FREE use of bicycles )

·         At each “ Arrival Point “ ( Railway Station / Bus Stands / Airport / Parking Plots for private vehicles ) , each arriving visitor to be welcomed with a RFID sensor embedded wrist-band ( with a beautiful rendering of Ganga Mata and bearing a description which reads :

“  नमो गंगे Kumbh 2019

Before issuing the wrist band, pilgrim’s AADHAR NO will be entered into the sensor

It will be mandatory for the visitors to wear this Wrist Band as long as they are inside the “ PILGRIMAGE PERIMETER “

This will help the central PILGRIM TRAFFIC CONTROL ROOM , to track  :

      #   each and every visitor

      #   missing / lost persons

     #    mischief-mongers / miscreants

     #    accident victims / sick persons

For a fool proof solution for CROWD CONTROL , I urge Kumbh Mela Administation to consider :

#    Increasing the no of CCTV cameras from 1,000 to 10,000

#    Couple these with a FACE RECOGNITION software , such that those who attempt
to “ WALK “ ( instead of riding ), inside the Pilgrimage Perimeter ( area covered by
Methods A / B / C ,described earlier ) will find their face, name, and their Aadhar ID
number displayed  on a large LED screen , as described in :

==============================

Currently , we get some 70,000 visitors every day at Taj Mahal . For better security , there is a plan to restrict this number to 40 ,000 per day

Without having to worry about security , can we raise this number to 100,000 per day  ?

Yes , of course  !  Install ropeway around the Taj and provide “ Augumented Reality headsets “ to visitors ( no entry inside the mausoleum ! )

Even if you don’t know how to swim, taking a holy dip in the

 Ganga would not be  difficult

There will be two bath pools about four to five feet deep and

will have stainless steel meshes under to save anyone from

drowning , so that one can go into water without any fear

According to him, the entire jetty will be disabled-friendly so

that they too can take a holy dip in Ganga.
