A news headline in
Hindustan Times ( 28 Aug ) reads :
“ Live or work in SoBo ? You can’t park
your car on roads anymore “
Parking on streets banned after decision ensured smooth traffic
flow during Maratha Morcha
Traffic police has banned parking on both sides of these roads in
South Mumbai , as they are on their priority list
There is a
legend that a great French princess, on being informed that the country people
had no bread, replied, " Then let them eat cake ! "
To 22 lakh car owners of Mumbai , BMC / Traffic Police /
Maharashtra Government , seem to be saying :
“ If you don’t
have a parking place on the road , why don’t you park your car inside your
flats ? “
Next expect
them to say :
“ As against 22
lakh cars , we have parking space on the roads , for only 3.3 lakh cars ( approx.. for 15 % of the cars
And , each car , on an average , gets used DAILY ( being driven on
the road ) for just 3 hours out of available 24 hours ( …. 12 % of the time ! )
For the balance 21 hours , it is just PARKED on the streets ,
causing all of our PARKING SPACE SHORTAGES
Hence , we
offer you Car Owners , the following options :
·
At
any given time , only 3.3
lakh cars will be allowed to be parked on
the roads , with the rest having to park inside their flats ( like ODD /
EVEN number scheme )
·
Let everyone dispose off
their PERSONAL cars and use “ Ride Sharing “
arrangements . Working round the clock , these 3.3 lakh “ Ride Sharing Cars “ would suffice to
take all of you to your work-place and back
Of course , you will need to stagger your WORKING HOURS round the clock in such a way that ,
at any given point of time , only 3.3 lakh persons are using those cars
·
Convince your employers to
allow you to “ Work from
Home “ , using Video Conferencing / Holographic projections etc , to
mark your attendance
·
Use specially created ,
green coloured , “ Car Donor Public Transport ( BEST Buses / Local Trains / Metros ) “ , which will be FREE to those of you ( and to
your entire family ) , who surrender their personal cars to the Government and
undertake not to buy a personal transport in future
=================================
Future of commuting within Mumbai , will
see a “ Sea Change “ !
