Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Light at the end of the Tower ?

Could be better than “ at the end of optical fiber tunnel “

Google’s parent company Alphabet calls it “ Project Taara “ .

I call it “ macro LiFi “, as opposed to existing “ micro LiFi “ based internet data streaming from a ceiling mounted LED lamp , down to my laptop resting on a table

Context :

Google In Talks With Jio, Airtel Over Project Taara For Internet Through Light Beams  /  Inc42 – 14 Dec

Extract :

Ø  Project Taara, which has been piloted in Andhra Pradesh in India and Kenya in Africa, uses free-space optical communications like light beams to provide internet connectivity to far-flung regions at a speed of 20 gigabytes per second. This is a significant increase from the current one gigabyte per second that most customers have access to currently.

Ø  The project can bring connectivity to remote areas and resolve hurdles such as optic fiber installation and other infrastructure, which is said to have intrigued both Airtel and Reliance Jio to be a part of the project.

Ø  The technology sends light beams instead of radio waves between transmitters and receivers attached to servers placed on buildings and structures. “This will be a game-changer since it can connect one to remote regions, have internet connectivity across buildings without cables and reduce the burden on towers,” a person aware of the development told ET.

=================================================

Here is what X Company website says :

Ø  The Taara team has piloted their technology in India and Africa. Taara links offer a cost-effective and quickly deployable way to bring high-speed connectivity to remote areas. Taara links help plug critical gaps to major access points, like cell towers and Wi-Fi hotspots, and have the potential to help thousands of people access the educational, business, and communication benefits of the web

Ø  Flexible Technology

Ø  With a clear line of sight, wireless optical communication technology can transmit data at high speeds of up to 20 Gbps. A single link can cover distances up to 20 km and be used to extend fiber networks.

Ø  Long-Range

Ø  Long range line-of-sight data transmissions at 20+ km.

Ø  High-Speed

Ø  High-throughput supports 10-100s Gbps data rates.

Why are Airtel and Reliance JIO partnering in this project ?

Simple. They can leverage their existing network of mobile service towers for mounting those Light Beam transmitters and receivers – and at low cost and in less time ( as compared to laying millions of miles of optical fiber cables )

As of June 2019,

   #  Airtel ( Bharati Infratel ) had 164,435 towers

   #  Reliance JIO Infratel had 170,000 towers

How can “ Macro Li Fi “ ( Project Taara ) be made to reach every home ?

#  A Light Beam receiver would need to be installed on every roof / terrace ( much like today’s dish antenna )

#  We will need some ( intermediate ) device to connect this “ Receiver “ with the LED light bulb in the ceiling

#  On the laptop, we will need another ( memory-stick like ) device to receive data streaming down from LED bulb

Are there companies who could develop such “ Intermediate Devices “ ?

Yes . Find their names at ….
