Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

L&T Construction 3D prints India's first building with reinforcement  /  Business Standard / 25 Dec 2020

L&T Construction, the construction arm of the $21 billion technology, engineering & construction conglomerate, Larsen & Toubro, has 3D printed a G+1 (Ground plus one) building with reinforcement for the first time in India.

With the country aggressively pursuing the objective of creating 60 million houses under the Housing for All by 2022 programme, this achievement will certainly give a huge fillip to the mass housing segment, said the company.

“3D concrete printing is one of the technology disruptors with the potential to radically redefine construction methodologies and I am extremely happy that by demonstrating our growing expertise in 3D printing, we are well positioned to push the boundaries of automated robotic construction,” said M V Satish, whole time director & senior executive vice president (Buildings).

He added, 3D printing will not only accelerate the pace of construction, but also significantly improve build quality.

The 3D printed building, which has a built up area of 700 sq. feet and is located at L&T Construction's Kanchipuram facility, has been built with a special, in-house developed concrete mix using indigenously available regular construction materials.

The building was printed with both vertical reinforcement bars and horizontal distributors using welded mesh, that satisfy provisions in the Indian Codes and optimise the cost of construction.

Barring the horizontal slab members, the entire building structure was 3D printed ‘Cast in Situ’ at the job site in an ‘open to sky’ environment within 106 printing hours, using a fully automated 3D printer.

3D printing is a process, in which the material is printed under computer control to build a 3-dimensional product, typically layer by layer. It is predominantly used in manufacturing industries to print rapid prototypes, complex shapes and small batch production using special polymers, metal alloys etc

3D printing with concrete is still largely work in progress across the globe.

Earlier in November 2019, the team had 3D printed a 240 sq. feet, 1 BHK apartment, in line with typical EWS building layout, to explore the feasibility of this innovative technology

I am an ex-L&T-ite ( 1959 - 1990 ) , and a proud L&T-ite

I urge you – and your team – to relentlessly pursue this 3D Printing technology, which I have been advocating to our Policy Makers for the past few years, as can be seen from my following 23 emails to our Cabinet Ministers / NITI Aayog etc :

Dear Shri S N Subrahmanyan

( MD – L&T / sns@lntecc.com ),

This innovation of L&T can lead to :

Ø  Revival of Construction Industry , in turn growth of feeder industries such as Steel Rebar / Ready Mix Concrete ( RMC ) / Cement / Glass / Wood / Tiles / Marble etc

Ø  Creation of lakhs of jobs in these feeder industries ( although 3D Printing of houses may not increase many jobs since process is AUTOMATED )

I urge you to consider the following :

Ø  Persuade Education Minister for Introduction of  following subjects in all Civil Engineering  Colleges ( and a lighter version in our 15,000 ITIs ( Industrial Training Institutes ) ,

      #   “ 3D Printing “

      #  PRODEVSYSProject Development System

Ø  Grant “ Manufacturing Technology Licenses “ for 3D Printing tech developed by L&T to hundreds of Construction Companies of India, on a nominal license-cum-royalty fees

Ø  Facilitate adding into the technology, following features :

#    Roof-top Solar Power generation with Reverse Metering ( or TESLA type

       roof tiles )

#   Tesla type POWERWALL solar power storage devices in each flat

#    Smart Electric Meters

#    Plinth level EV Battery Charging outlets

#    Internet connected Smart Water Meters for each flat / tenement (

       instead for building )

#   Rain water harvesting / Drain water recycling

#  Segregation of dry and wet garbage ( possible composting / bio-gas

    generation )
