DeepFake News : Here is how to Control

Context :

Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw takes firm stand against deepfakes : Key meeting today  / 23 Nov 2023

Extract :

In a move to tackle the growing threat of deepfake technology union minister

Ashwini Vaishnaw is set to chair a high-level meeting on Thursday.

The meeting aims to strategize and address challenges posed by deepfake content

Dear Shri Ashwiniji ,

#   Fake news are being “ posted “ by human users ( as of now ), on Social Media

#   There are hundreds of such “ media “ and hundreds of millions of users

#   Main media are > Google / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram

#   To “ post “ any text / photo / video , a USER must first “ log in “ with User Id /

     Password

#   Persons posting “ fakes “ , have created “ fake “ identities / IDs

#   For Social Media , it may be possible to determine whether a “ post “ is fake

but  it is very difficult to “ verify “ such fake persons .

I suppose , experts attending today’s meeting, will offer you many suggestions to

tackle this issue

Some of those suggestions may offer “ partial solutions “ but may be very difficult

to implement

In past ( few years ) , for enabling USERS to MONETIZE their PERSONAL DATA , I

have suggested implementation of the following :

 Only Answer : a Statutory Warning  ……………………………………………[ 10 Nov 2018 ]

SARAL ( Single  Authentic  Registration for Anywhere  Login )….[ 10 Feb 2019 ]

  Digital Dividend from Demographic Data [ 4 D ]………… …………….[ 14 Feb 2019 ]

It just occurred to me that my proposed “ mechanism “ can also ensure that ,

when a Social Media discovers a “ Fake Post “  we are able to able to pin down

the person who posted that , superfast !

We will have a undeniable PROOF that he / she posted that offensive piece

Simply because , under my proposal , all Social Media will ( mandatorily ) require

that any user wanting to “ use “ any service of that media , will have to first click :

  Log me in with… www.IndiaDataCustodian.gov.in

Only thereafter , he / she will be able to POST anything !

With regards,

Here is how BARD reacted to my suggestion :

Yes, your suggestion makes sense and it is worth considering.

The idea of mandating all social media platforms to require users to authenticate their identities through a central government portal, such as www.IndiaDataCustodian.gov.in, before they can post anything could be an effective way to combat the spread of deepfake news.

Here are some of the potential advantages of your proposal: 1.     Increased accountability:

By requiring users to authenticate their identities, it would be much easier to trace the source of deepfake news and hold those responsible accountable for their actions

2.     Reduced anonymity:

The anonymity that social media platforms often provide can embolden people to spread misinformation and create harmful content. Requiring authentication would reduce this anonymity and make people more hesitant to post false or misleading information.

3.     Improved trust in social media:

By taking steps to address the problem of deepfake news social media platforms can regain the trust of users who may be concerned about the spread of misinformation on these platforms .

Of course, there are also some potential challenges to consider:

1.     Privacy concerns:

Some people may be concerned about the privacy implications of requiring them to authenticate their identities with a government portal. It would be important to ensure that any system implemented is designed to protect user privacy.

2.     Technical feasibility:

Implementing a system that would work across all social media platforms could be technically challenging. It would be important to ensure that the system is interoperable and that it can handle the large volume of data that social media platforms generate.

3.     Enforcement challenges:

Even if a system is implemented, it would be difficult to enforce it perfectly. There will always be some people who find ways to circumvent the system.

Despite these challenges, I believe that your proposal is worth considering.

It is a creative and potentially effective way to address the growing problem of deepfake news

I would encourage Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to present your suggestion to the participants of today's meeting and invite their views on it.
