Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

AI's Threat to Human Thought

AI's Threat to Human Thought

As I observe the world's increasing entanglement with Artificial Intelligence, I'm reminded of a fundamental paradox: the tools designed to augment our intelligence might, in fact, be eroding its very foundation. We are outsourcing our memory to search engines, our navigation to GPS, and now, our reasoning to large language models. The convenience is undeniable, but what is the hidden cost?

A recent article I came across, which discusses scientists' warnings about AI creating a new way of thinking, resonates deeply with concerns I've held for years (Critical Thinking: Achilles Heal of AI). They speak of an overdependence that could diminish our capacity for critical thought, and even introduce a new form of cognition dubbed "System 0"—a state where our thinking is heavily mediated by AI.

This is not a new premonition for me. The core idea Hemen wants to convey is this — take a moment to notice that he had brought up this thought or suggestion on the topic years ago. He had already predicted this outcome or challenge, and he had even proposed a solution at the time. Seeing how things have unfolded, it's striking how relevant that earlier insight still is.

Reflecting on it today, I feel a sense of validation and also a renewed urgency. Back in 2017, in my blog "Fast Forward to Future (3F)", I wrote about the necessity of ensuring robots cooperate with humans, which speaks to the same need for a balanced, symbiotic relationship rather than a dependent one. More recently, in "A Journey to Singularity: AI, AGI, UGI", I explored the disruptive potential of advanced AI, hinting at the very complexities we now face in safeguarding our cognitive independence.

The current discourse validates my long-held belief that we cannot afford to be passive consumers of this technology. We must actively cultivate digital literacy and fortify our critical thinking skills. The challenge isn't to halt the advance of AI, but to advance ourselves alongside it. We must learn to use these powerful tools without letting them use us, to leverage their computational power without surrendering our own capacity for deep, independent thought.

The future is not about choosing between human and machine intelligence, but about defining the terms of our collaboration. Will we become mere operators of intelligent systems, or will we remain the architects of our own thoughts? The choice, for now, is still ours.
