Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Finding God in the App Store

Finding God in the App Store

The modern quest for meaning, it seems, can begin not on a mountaintop, but in the search bar of an app store. The phrase “Finding God in the App Store” is a fascinating reflection of our times. We have digitized and cataloged nearly every other aspect of human experience, so why not the divine?

This immediately brings to mind my decades-long fascination with the mechanics of 'search.' I spent years deconstructing how we find talent, defining systems with primary and refined search parameters to pinpoint the right person in a sea of data. We searched by industry, function, experience, and even competence percentile.

It makes me wonder, with a sense of profound irony, what are the search parameters for God? Do we filter by denomination? Sort by user rating? Refine by the required level of commitment? The very idea of reducing a spiritual journey to a set of searchable keywords and filters feels absurd, yet it is precisely the paradigm we now operate in.

Seeing this trend unfold feels like witnessing a prediction come to life. The core idea I want to convey is this — I brought up this very shift in how we seek answers years ago. In a 2010 post I revisited recently, titled Future of Search Engines, I wrote: "I am acutely conscious that in another 25 years, no one will search for 'INFORMATION' on Google… They will enter their current / expected 'problem' in a hand - held device and receive readymade 'solution / answer / advice' in milliseconds!"

And here we are. People are not just searching for information about faith; they are downloading pre-packaged solutions for their spiritual anxieties—apps for prayer, meditation, and virtual congregations. Seeing this unfold gives me a sense of validation but also a renewed urgency to question the implications. When the path to enlightenment is just another app, guided by algorithms and five-star reviews, what part of the essential human struggle is lost?
