Hi Friends,

Even as I launch this today ( my 80th Birthday ), I realize that there is yet so much to say and do. There is just no time to look back, no time to wonder,"Will anyone read these pages?"

Lighting the Soul's Database

Lighting the Soul's Database

I recently came across a beautiful sentiment from Lithuanian Ambassador Diana Mickeviciene, who described Diwali as a reminder to “light up the soul.” This simple yet profound statement resonated deeply with me. Beyond the festive lights and celebrations, Diwali signifies an inner illumination—a victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.

This idea of inner light feels particularly relevant in our current age. We are surrounded by an overwhelming amount of information, a constant stream of data that can feel more like noise than wisdom. In this digital darkness, how do we find the sparks of true insight? How do we “light up the soul” when the mind is cluttered?

It reminds me of my own obsession with organizing and accessing knowledge. For years, I have been meticulously documenting my thoughts, creating a personal database of over 18,000 entries. The challenge, then and now, is not just to collect information, but to illuminate it—to find the right piece of wisdom at the right moment. It's a technological parallel to the spiritual quest Diwali represents.

Years ago, I wrote about my efforts in Simplifying Search, where I developed a method to search this vast personal database using keywords. The goal was to cut through the noise and find a specific thought or idea, much like lighting a single lamp to see clearly in a dark room. Each keyword was a small flame, bringing a specific concept out of the shadows.

Ms. Mickeviciene's words serve as a powerful reminder that whether we are navigating our inner world or the vast digital universe, the fundamental quest is the same: to seek and create light. We are all curators of our own internal databases, and festivals like Diwali encourage us to find the switch and illuminate the valuable knowledge stored within.
